1 instruction Page 1 (For Series 3400,350O and 3700 applicators only) DESCRIPTION The Low Level Indicator will provide a contact closure to indicate when the level of adhesive in the tank falls to the po&t that the unit hould be refilled. For applicators withuniscan and Multi- ScanR Q control systems, a low level condition is indicated by a contact closure which can be conne6ted to a remote device. For applicators with the OmniScan R control system, the contact closure is input to the main board. This will cause a low level warning message to appear on the screen and the yellow warning LED to light. The Low Level Indicator consists of a float, a counterweight, a lever rod, a mercury switch and a terminal block. The float is balanced by the counterweight such that it rides half in the adhesive, half out. As the adhesive level drops, the float attached to the lever rod drops down. The mercury switch, which is attached to the pivot point on the lever rod, tilts forward. This action causes the mercury switch to close. The switch contacts are available at the terminal block. When used as an uncommitted contact, the Low Level Indicator is intended for 30 VAC maximum, Class 2 circuit operation as defined in Article 725 of the National Electrical Code. 2 Instruction Page 2 GENERAL INSTALLATION 1. Drain the tank of all adhesive. 2. Disconnect and lock out input power to the applicator. WARNING: Failure to disconnect external power to the applicator presents a serious shock hazard. The input terminal block and input terminals on the circuit breaker are still electrically energized. 3. Remove the pump enclosure according to the instructions in your applicator manual. 4. Remove the front cover and the electrical cover. 5. Remove the two screws holding the pump pan to the tank cover. Knock-out the lever rod opening. 6. Clean the tank of any debris before filling with adhesive. 7. Remove the float from the lever rod and slide the lever rod through the opening. 8. Mount the indicator to the pump pan and (2) screws removed in Step 5. secure with the two 9. Attach the float to the lever rod. The mercury switch activates (switch closes) when the lever rod drops below horizontal. You can adjust the low level warning time by moving the float up or down on the lever rod. 10. Loosen the locking nut above the float and screw the float up or down the lever rod to the position that will produce the desired low-level warning point. Tighten the locking nut. Use Table 1 and illustration in Figure 1 to determine the correct position of the float on the lever rod. The X distance is the distance between the low level warning point (reference groove) and the top of the tank strainer. The Y,, distance is merely a convenient measurement for positioning the float. Connect the wire ends to the back of the terminal block installed in Step UniScan and MultiScan Controllers: The Low Level Indicator can now be connected to a remote indicator provided by the customer. A? WARNING: The Low Level indicator must be powered by an NIX Class 2 supply rated 30 VAC max (42 V). Failure to follow this instruction may result in per sonal injury or death. SETUP INSTRUCTIONS OmniScan Controller: Attach the remaining two wires to the front of the terminal block. Connect these wires to TB2 on the main OmniScan control board. See Figure Replace the electrical and front covers. Snap the pump enclosure into place. NOTE: Units with OmniScan control systems must change the configuration code before continuing with the setup instructions. Refer to Software Configuration for this procedure. 1. 6 Instruction Page ADHESIVE LEVEL Figure 4 - Correct Position Of The Float 2. When the low-level warning comes on, open the tank cover and remove the tank barrier. 3. Observe where the float rides on the surface of the adhesive. 4. If the reference groove is below the adhesive surface, remove the pump enclosure, loosen the locknut on the counterweight and turn the counterweight so that it moves away from the pivot point of the lever rod. Continue turning the counterweight until the groove floats at the surface. See Figure 4. A CAUTION: The counterweight will be hot. Wear safety gloves (P/N ) and protective clothing to prevent injury. 5. If the groove is above the surface, turn the counterweight so that it moves closer to the pivot point of the lever rod. Continue turning the counterweight until the groove floats at the surface. NOTE: If the adhesive is ever changed to one with a different specific gravity, the counterweight will have to be readjusted. 6. Tighten the locknut against the counterweight. 7. Replace the pump enclosure. The Low Level Indicator is ready for operation. If you have an OmniScan control system continue with OmniScan Control system Configuration and Operation. 7 Instruction Page 7 OMNISCAN CONTROL SYSTEM CONFIGURATION AND OPERATION Software Configuration Response to a Low Level Condition The configuration code in the PROGRAM + SETUP + CONFIGR menu must contain the low level option letter /A. This code will already be configured if the low level option was factory installed. If the low level option is added in the field, the configuration must be changed to reflect this option. 1. Enter the configuration menu by pressing PROGRAM + SETUP -+ CONFIGR. 2. Press ENTER to move the cursor over until it is one space past the last character in the current configuration code. Press the UP/DOWN arrows to scroll through the menu until the letter A appears. Press ENTER until you see the warning message. The OmniScan control system is capable of using the low level input in two ways. The primary use is to generate messages on the display, light the panel indicators and activate the standard contact outputs. However, the OmniScan controllercan also signal remote devices with the I/O Contact option board, Under normal conditions a Level OK message appears in the scanning top line of the display. When the low level switch indicates a low adhesive, a Low Adhesive Level message appears. A yellow warning LED is also lit on the front panel. This warning will disappear when the adhesive level is restored. In addition, the OmniScan control system provides a feature that allows the warning to become a fault if the level remains low for an extended period of time. This time period can be adjusted in the menus. The best value for the time period will depend on the tank volume and adhesive consumption rate. To remove the fault, the tank should be filled and a control test run using the PRO- GRAM + TEST + CONTROLmenu. EXAMPLE: Tank capacity: Adhesive Usage Rate 30 lbs 15 lbs/hour Pub. No B ONORDSON CORPORATION 1991 Issued 12191
8 Instruction Page 0 Full tank lasts: 2 hours (120 minutes) (30 lbs / 15 lbs/hour = 2 hours) If the low level is set at 30% of tank volume then: Time from low warning until tank is empty: (0.30 x 120 minutes = 36 minutes) 36 minutes If the low level warning to fault time is set at 16 minutes then a fault will occur 20 minutes before the tank is empty. Operationally, the sequence will be as follows: Time (Hr:Min) Status 0:oo Start with full tank 1:24 Low level warning ON 1:40 Low level fault ON 2:oo Out of adhesive if tank is not filled Use the following procedure to change the time delay: 1. Press PROGRAM + OPTION + LEVEL. 2. Press the UP/DOWN arrows to change the number of minutes and seconds or use the numeric touchpads. 3. Press ENTER then press CANCEL until you return to the main menu. Signaling A Remote Device About A Low Level Condition A standard OmniScan control systemwithout the I/O Contact option will generate a warning (and possibly a fault) in response to a low level condition, but does not provide an output dedicated only to low level. If an output dedicated to low level is required, two methods are available. The first method is to purchase the I/O Contact option board for OmniScan controller. One of the output functions available on this board is dedicated to low level. This board also provides 7 other outputs and 8 inputs for remote device interfacing. An alternate method is to perform the following modification to the low level switch wiring to disconnect the low level switch from the OmniScan control system. The disadvantage to this method is that the OmniScan controller will no longer be aware of the low level condition and will not provide the warning/fault messages. Issued ONORDSON CORPORATION 1991 Pub. No B
9 Instruction Page 9 NOTE: Nordson does not recommend attaching the level switch to both the OmniScan and a remote device. Disconnect the two wires from the TB2 on the OmniScan control system main board. Disconnect the same two wires on the low level terminal block. Remove these two wires from the unit and discard. Connect the remote device to the low level terminal block. A WARNING: The Low Level indicator must be powered by an NEC Class 2 supply rated 30 VAC, max (42 V). Failure to follow this instruction may result in personal injury or death. Change the OmniScan configuration to delete the low level option using the PROGRAM + SETUP + CONFIGR menu. NOTE: This procedure can be reversed by disconnecting the remote device, re-installing two wires between the omniscan TB2 and the low level indicator terminal block and changing the configuration code.
