2 Hot Wheel and Bearing Detector System The Inspired Systems Sentry HWBD system is based on a number of hardware and software components as shown in a basic outline below. 3 Sentry HBD Technical Specifications The Sentry HBD is front-line data acquisition unit for the collection of bearing and wheel temperature information. Designed to operate in the harshest environments in the world, over 3000 Sentry units are currently installed and in operation around the world. Model 2058 Sentry System The Model 2058 Sentry System monitors moving trains, providing real-time detection of: Overheated bearings, when bearing scanners are installed and enabled Overheated wheels, when wheel scanners are installed and enabled Dragging equipment, when dragging-equipment detectors are installed and enabled Shifted loads, when wide-load detectors are installed and firmware is written to support wide-load detection Oversized loads, when high-load detectors are installed and firmware is written to support high-load detection Direction of the train Exit speed of the train The Sentry System runs well in the harsh environments found along right of ways. It runs under the most adverse weather conditions, functioning over a temperature range of -40ºC to +71ºC (-40ºF to +160ºF). It runs in high vibration situations. It runs unattended, carrying out all tasks without human intervention. The Sentry System monitors trains traveling from 8 to 145 kph (5 to 90 mph). It monitors trains heading in either direction on the track. Scanners The STC scanners are the primary input devices of the system. Each provides: A specially designed housing, which protects the infrared sensor and associated optics. A shutter mechanism, which prevents the entrance of dust and other contaminants during periods of inactivity. A controlled heater, which removes moisture and snow that, might affect the performance of the infrared sensor assembly. A circular military-type connector, which provides a reliable vibration resistant connection between the scanner and the system electronics.

4 The Model 2058 Sentry System uses two types of scanners. One type scans the temperature of axle bearings. The other scans the temperature of wheels. Except for the addition of an attenuation bracket on the wheel scanner, both types are identical and can be used interchangeably. However, each type is mounted on the outside of the rail differently. Within each scanner is a sensor that measures change in the amount of infrared radiation emanating from the point at which it is aimed. As the amount of infrared radiation increases, the output from the scanner increases proportionally. This increase is expressed as a DC voltage. This voltage is routed through a signal conditioning circuit to the CPU board where it is converted to a digital value and compared to a stored value. If the input value is greater than the stored value, an alarm is generated. The output of the scanners is expressed as degrees above the temperature of the surrounding environment. The scanners obtain their ambient reference from the bottoms of vehicles as they pass over the scanners. If a scanner doesn t detect a temperature change, its output is near zero. As a bearing or wheel passes through the scanner s field of view, the higher level of infrared radiation causes the scanner output to increase proportionally. When the bearing or wheel passes out of the field of view, the scanner output returns to zero. A pyrometer is a device that measures rapid changes of temperatures. It uses the infrared radiation emitted by a hot body as a basis for measurement. Scanner mounts attach scanners to the rail in a way that ensures that the scanners are: Correctly aimed Easily re-aimed, if necessary Isolated from as much shock and vibration as possible Electrically isolated from the rail Bearing scanner mounts and wheel scanner mounts are different in design. They aren t interchangeable. However, they contain many common parts, which means that fewer spare parts need to be kept on hand. The scanner mounts can be installed on either rail, eliminating the need to maintain left-rail and right-rail models.
