5 RBC Overview ERTMS Wayside - Radio Block Centre 2nd generation The Radio Block Centre is the vital system of ERTMS. It is responsible for sending trains the information they need to perform speed and distance supervision, according to the physical characteristics of the line (such as gradients and line speed limits), the conditions of the traffic (train separation) and of others subsystems (such as level crossings). The main subsystems/components are: TMR RBC This is the main apparatus, made up of a vital section (referred in the following as the Safety Nucleus, NS), a Communication Computer (CC) with routers/switches plus other ancillary systems (fan controls, electro-optical interfaces and power supply modules); Operator Interface It constitutes the interface between the apparatus and the human operators. It is made up of safe keyboards and the related management cabinet; ART This is the apparatus dedicated to the management of the alarms, the recording of events and to the apparatus remote control. It is made up of processing cabinets plus operator interfaces for diagnostic/maintenance/traffic; MSC subsystems is dedicated to the connection between the RBC and the radio (GSM-R) system. 6 Introduction Overall Description Block Diagram of the devices that exchange date with Safety Nucleus The main characteristics of RBC are: Management of 30 trains in full supervision. Management up to 10 Interlockings and adjacent RBCs Management of all necessary set up data for establishing a communication session with the On Board Unit; Processing of the messages exchanged with the On Board Unit; Processing of the information exchanged with the Interlocking; Processing of the information exchanged with other RBCs; Movement Authority real time update; Management of all particular information such as emergency stops, temporary speed restrictions,, etc; Management of the Start and the End of train Missions. Design Criteria The RBC design has followed specific criteria in order to guarantee the required levels for the availability and for the safety of the apparatus and of its functions. The focal point of the safety design is the voting principle, achieved via a 2 out of 3 architecture (Triple Modular Redundancy, TMR) with voting software techniques through fail-safe hardware. Following is a synthesis of the criteria adopted throughout the entire design: 2 out of 3 architecture with three separate processing units ensures safety by processing data independently in parallel and selecting the result on the basis of a 2 out of 3 majority voting procedure (dedicated external fail-safe units automatically exclude the processing unit in disagreement with the other two); the same architecture guarantees also high availability, since the NS is fault tolerant and will continue to operate with one of its processing unit out (in which case the voting scheme becomes 2 out of 2); internal tests are periodically executed on the NS computers in order to check the status of the internal resources. The tests generate a status map that is exchanged and voted among the sections. This mechanism is used in order to avoid that failure within the section can influence the output to be voted of the section itself; software diversity, with logic data allocated on the three sections of NS, is a safety measure used against SW errors; galvanic isolation devices realise the electrical separation among the different components and from the external devices in order to avoid electromagnetic interferences and disturbances; maintenance can be performed without the interruption of the system by isolating the out of order part and cutting power only to the section under repair. After repair, the section can be automatically reinserted; the serial communication interfaces are all redundant in order to guarantee a high level of availability of the system. In the normal situation both the communication interfaces are used: only in case of failure of one of them the system is able to run with only one communication interface; the system design allows for the software to be installed on more powerful platforms in case it is required; in case more controlled field units need to be added to the system, no hardware modification are necessary thanks to the expansibility of the system; the rules defining the safety logic requirements of a specific country can be easily customized; a configuration tool is available for the client for modifications that can occur; a simulation system that can simulate interlocking and/or Safety Nucleus is available in order to perform tests; a simulator enabling functional testing of the RBC, simulating typical operating scenarios, is available in order to simulate the train movement during design phases; the power cabinet is made of one primary 48 Vdc source plus one fall back unit in order to ensure high availability of the system. The safe connection among RBC and IXL is performed with a safe protocol. System Layout In general, all the constituents of an RBC system are enclosed in three cabinets: a cabinet for TMR, a cabinet for ART, and a cabinet for Keyboards and Operator Terminal management. 2 All Rights Reserved. For this reason Vac 50 Hz - 48 Vdc specific power supply unit are installed, inside the control room, to provide the correct power and voltage value. Both ART cabinet and operator desks have 48 Vdc power supply inputs. Operator desk receives its power supply final input,which is 125 Vac, from the safe power supplier APC (48 Vdc). Also LCD-TFT displays are 48 Vdc powered. 9 TMR ERTMS Wayside - Radio Block Centre 2nd generation The TMR assembly consists of a cabinet made up of the following 19" racks: BTMR rack (Safety Nucleus), containing three elaboration sections (the modules in which the vital logic and diagnostic functions are performed) and optical interface elements; voter-watchdog, three modules of the exclusion logic and three DC/DC converter giving power to the three vital sections; the communication modules which guarantee to the Safety Nucleus the interface services to the TLC-LD network, i.e.: to the WAN network of AV lines and to the GSM-R. power supply, composed by switch units. Each section of the Safety Nucleus consists of the following modules: a CPU processing module, in which the vital logic and diagnostic functions are performed. This module contains the RAM memory on which the software is loaded, a microprocessor which runs the processing, a FLASH memory bank which contains the programs relating to the automatic start functions, reconnection functions and off-line diagnostic functions and a RAM bank in which is stored all status information to be used at system start-up, after a temporary interruption of the activity; four Industry Pack communication modules dedicated to managing serial communication interfaces; a module which carries out the galvanic insulation functions of the communication lines to guarantee the independence of each section of the Safety Nucleus (NS). This module also features the disable circuits of the communication lines controlled by the Exclusion Logic. Moreover, each section includes a CPU processing and FAST LAN interface module, in which the non-vital communication functions to the network service access subsystems are performed and which acts at the same time as carrier of the IP communication modules managing the serial interfaces. The non-vital CPU board of the communication subsystem is fully identical to the vital CPU board, except for the software configuration. The main function of the communication subsystem is to provide the Safety Nucleus with the interface services to the TLC-LD network, which is the WAN network of AV lines and which therefore physically connects the concerned subsystems (e.g. one RBC with its related NVCs, one RBC with other adjacent RBCs). 11 ART ERTMS Wayside - Radio Block Centre 2nd generation The ART rack implements the alarm and recording functions for a RBC system made up of one to three safety nucleuses. Main functions it acquires diagnostic data and data relevant to line status (redundant vital network) from the Safety Nucleus; it acquires diagnostic data from: power supplies, fan temperature monitoring, Signaller Desk and DM desk (redundant vital network); it sends data relevant to equipment and system diagnostic to the Diagnostic & Maintenance Desk according to configuration; it sends data required for the various displaying to the Signaller Desk and Diagnostic & Maintenance Desk according to system configuration; it records acquired data and implements the event log function; it acquires non-vital commands from the Signaller Interface and converts them into commands executable by the Safety Nucleus; it manages logic alarms (or exceptions) and system summary alarms; it manages the communication via LAN network with the central post of the SCC automation system, for sending controls. Composition The Alarms, Recording and Remote Control (ART) subsystem consists of a 600x600x1900 mm cabinet in which two Compact industrial PCs in stand-by configuration (called ART1 and ART2) are located. In case of multiple RBCs, up to six computers can be installed in a single ART cabinet so to manage three RBCs. The cpci subrack consists of two identical right and left sections. Each section features a 3U cpci backplane, 3 slots and 4 slots, Power slots and ATA Serial slots, integrated. The subrack is also fitted with ventilation fan unit with built-in operation and temperature controller and failure warning LEDs. Interfacing The ART1 and ART2 computers receive the same data from the Safety Nucleus, but only the server master (normally ART1) generates the related output. In case of fault, the master computer is excluded and taken over by the stand-by computer; this allows hardware or software maintenance without system down time. 1 - Power supply distribution subrack 2 - Monitor 3 - cpci card file 4 - KVM switch 5 - Keyboard 6 - Supply filter Each ART computer is connected to the NS through two serial, synchronous, high speed, fibre optics links. 13 ERTMS Wayside - Radio Block Centre 2nd generation GET Keyboard Management Rack The rack contains: the GET module which is charged with receiving under safety conditions the commands set via functional keyboard; the functional keyboard is a mobile item and has been specially designed to be placed on the operator desk together with the other interface devices; it is connected to the Safety Nucleus present in the system (up to max. 3 units) via two 115,2 Kbps serial bus; the APC module which is charged with powering under safety conditions the operator desk according to the vitality signals the module receives from the desk workstation via an interface board. GET Since the Functional Keyboard is a vital subsystem, it is connected to the NS through two serial bus (normal and reserve) while digital input/output are managed through a proprietary card called TAS based on a 2 out of 2 safety architecture. The equipment (cards APC and TAS) for the keyboard and display panels management is enclosed in a single cabinet (size 600 x 600 x 1900 mm). Moreover the proprietary board installed in the cabinet allows to interface a Functional Keyboard with more than one Safety Nucleus. Keyboard management board The GET2 is a proprietary board which carries 2oo2 safety architecture. The GET2 includes three parts: two identical processors (micro A and micro B) and one watch-dog circuit, which is piloted by two micros and that disenables the output interface of the board when there is a damage or failure in the two micros. The firmware of the GET2 manages the following functions: 2oo2 safety architecture (exchange information between processors, Voter-Watch-dog); Serial link communication with NS to 115,2 Kbps; Internal diagnostic: RAM/ROM memory, Watchdog, serial link and matrix interface to keyboard; Memorises the keys, which were pressed. Display Panel safe power supply board The power supply of the Display Panel is managed by a Watch-dog fail-safe board, which switches off the power circuit if there is no refresh signal on display panels. The Watch-dog carries a 2oo2 safety architecture, it is connected to the output of a 48 V DC/110 V AC inverter, which is connected to the PC managing the Display Panels. A dedicated software on the PC verifies the periodic refresh of the display panel images and pilots the APC board Watchdog. This allows to reach a security level greater than SIL0. Hw configuration Individual rack can contain max three 19" subracks to which the same keyboard is connected. 15 Operator Interface Desk ERTMS Wayside - Radio Block Centre 2nd generation The operator desk represents the physical interface between the human operator and the RBC system. Display Panels The display panels are divided in: Display Panels (DP) consist of one or more 24,32 or 46 LCD monitors which show the lay-out of the line and the state of the signalling entities (train speed and position with numbers); Operator Terminal (TO) consists of one or two 24 LCD monitors shares a part of DP monitors; it enables the signalman to send traffic commands related to speed restrictions, emergency stops, etc. The Operator Terminal also provides information about the status of the RBC system. Operator Interface Desk on safe 24 LCD-TFT The operator interface is made up of: Display Panel (DP); Functional Keyboard (FK); Keyboards and Operator Interface management cabinet. Tipically the Operator Terminal is organized in the following four functional areas: Commands. This area contains the push buttons for commands. Train and Speed Restriction display. This area contains window for display of train data, window for display of activated Speed Restrictions and commands windows summarizing Speed Restrictions and train data. Operator Information. This area contains commands to show/hide the identities of trackside signalling entities on the Display Panel, Logical Exceptions (these are the operator commands rejected by the vital logic), Commands to show/ hide the window of Logical Exceptions.
