5 Chapter 1 Getting Started Introduction The Virtual Front Panel (VFP) tool lets you change the following critical operating parameters of a /6 kv UPS: Operating load voltage Operating input and output frequencies Maximum limit when bypass frequency is considered to be out of specification You can also use VFP to: View current runtimes Configure the number of Extended Battery Modules (EBMs) Set or disable the UPS to detect site wiring faults Set or disable an alarm to sound on C failure Run the UPS in High Efficiency mode Configure the Remote Emergency Power off (REPO) contacts to be used as a remote on/off switch Put the UPS in Normal mode, Standby mode, or Bypass mode. NOTE djusting the number of EBMs without running VFP can cause network management software to perform an early shutdown. Early shutdown occurs when a UPS reports a much shorter or longer backup time based on an incorrect number of attached EBMs. The UPS still provides total backup time of the attached EBMs. For example, an incorrectly reported number of EBMs could cause the network management software to command a shutdown after only 3 minutes when there may be 15 minutes of runtime available. If the shutdown command were not given, the UPS would continue to support the load for the full 15 minutes. Powerware Virtual Front Panel User s Guide xxx Rev P01 Draft 12 ug

6 Getting Started First Time Scenario The first time you use VFP, follow this overview: 1. Install the VFP software on a computer connected to the UPS. For installation directions, see Installation" on the page Click Port to specify the COM port and baud rate to use to connect to the UPS. For details, see Specifying the Port and Baud Rate" on page Click Connect to establish communication with the UPS. The UPS Connection Status indicator changes from red to green to indicate a successful communication link between VFP and the UPS. The On/Off button changes to match the UPS s current on or off status. For details, see Connecting to and Disconnecting from the UPS" on page To configure the UPS using VFP, the UPS must be in Standby mode (turned off with utility power present). Turn off the UPS by clicking On/Off until the button displays Off." For details, see Turning the UPS On and Off" on page 2 3. NOTE Before making any configuration changes, you might want to make a note of the current configuration and start a log to track future configuration changes. VFP does not provide an automatic log or a reset to defaults. 5. The first task you might want to do is view the current battery runtimes or configure the number of EBMs. Click Config, then click the Battery tab. The current runtime displays. For details, see Setting Battery Options" on page You can set many other configuration parameters and options. For details, see Configuration Tasks" on page Click Disconnect to close communication with the UPS. 8. Click File then Exit to close VFP. 1 2 Powerware Virtual Front Panel User s Guide xxx Rev P01 Draft 12 ug 2005

7 Getting Started Installation Follow these instructions to install the VFP software. System Requirements VFP requires the following hardware and software: or higher microprocessor 16 MB or more memory Microsoft Windows 95/98/NT/2000/ME Hard disk with 5 MB free space RS 232 Serial Port (COM1 to COM9) To verify the latest system requirements, check the Readme file provided with the software. Installing the Software To install VFP: 1. Verify that a valid UPS type is connected to the computer on which you plan to install VFP. 2. Verify that you know the COM port number and current baud rate settings for the computer. 3. Uninstall any previous version of VFP. From the Start menu, select Control Panel, dd/remove Programs, VFP, and then dd/remove. Select Yes to confirm the uninstallation. 4. Download or copy the vfp.exe file to your computer s hard drive. 5. Double click on the file. n unzip window opens. 6. Set the path to unzip the files to, and extract the files. 7. Close the zip window and open the directory containing the extracted files. 8. Double click on setup.exe to start the installation process. The VFP Configuration Setup window opens. 9. Follow the instructions as prompted to finish the installation. Powerware Virtual Front Panel User s Guide xxx Rev P01 Draft 12 ug
