5 Chapter 1 Introduction Software Overview The software provides a method to control the ventilator from a computer. It allows the real-time changing of settings for tidal volume, respiration rate, and inspiration/expiration ratios. Alarm settings for high and low pressure can be entered for ventilators purchased with the pressure sensing and alarm option. Minimum System Computer Requirements 1) AT or 100% compatible 2) Windows operating system 98 or higher. 3) One available RS-232 serial port To avoid operational errors when using the software program, refer to the Columbus Instruments (CI) Animal Ventilator Instruction Manual for guidance on the proper operation and programming of the ventilator. 1

6 Chapter 2 - Getting Started Software Installation It is always recommended to work with a copy of an original program disk. After you have copied the CIVCOM v6.11 folder from the original disk to your C: Drive, run the CIVCOM.EXE file. The CIVCOM.EXE file can be copied to the program directory or installed as a desktop shortcut if so desired. Main Menu Dialog boxes appear on the screen to present information and get user input. Moving around a dialog box is accomplished with your standard mouse or the Alt key shortcuts. When the software has been installed, your monitor will display Figure 2-1. All features are accessed from this interface by selecting a data box and typing in the relevant data or by selecting an operation button. The user controls the ventilator operation from the Settings section of the Main Menu. For more information on the data settings refer to the CI Animal Ventilator Instruction Manual. Selecting the Start button on the Main Menu begins ventilator operation. The ventilator s response is recorded in the Received Data section of the Main Menu (Figure 2-1). The user can change the ventilator operation at any time without stopping the ventilator by changing the data in the Settings section and then selecting the Start button. The ventilator will then respond and show its response in the Received Data section. The user can stop the ventilator operation at any time by selecting the Stop button on the Main Menu. The user can exit the software by selecting the Close button or the Exit option in the File Menu. The operations of the File, Tools, Setup and Help menus, and Check Status button are explained in the following paragraphs. Figure 2-1 When the software program is initially accessed, a Save Data dialog box will overlay the Main Menu (Figure 2-2) to give the user the option to start recording the initial session of ventilation. If the user chooses to start saving data, the Save As dialog box will appear after selecting Yes to give the file options for saving the data. (Figure 2-3). 2

File Menu Figure 2-4 Figure 2-5 Accessed from the Main Menu, this menu allows the user to open log or CSV data files or to save data to a CSV file or to exit the CIVCOM v6.11 program. (Figure 2-6). The software offers the chance to save the current session data to a CSV file when the software is started; you can create multiple CSV files during a current session. A session begins when a CSV file is created and the start button is selected, and ends when exiting the software, or by creating another current CSV file. Every change to the Settings section of the Main Menu is saved to the current CSV file when the start button is selected and the CIV-101 responds. The data log files from older versions of software can be read in the CSV file format, and can be saved in the new CSV format. Figure 2-6 3

8 Tools Menu Reset Option (Figure 2-7) Allows resetting of parameters to the Main Menu under the following situations: 1. To restore the previous settings before selecting the Start button. 2. To transfer changes in parameter settings made using the ventilator front panel. 3. To restore the software s interaction with the ventilator after correcting a connection or power problem. Figure 2-7 Setup Menu Accessed from the Main Menu, this option is used to match the maximum volume of the installed cylinder size (figures 2-8 & 2-9). When the values for volume, rate, ratio, pressure high (P/H) or pressure low (P/L) are above or below the operational range of the cylinder size, the ventilator will not respond until the correct values are programmed in the settings section of the Main Menu. A Range Error dialog box will appear to notify which range settings (volume, rate, ratio, pressure high (P/H) or pressure low (P/L)) are incorrect. See the troubleshooting section in chapter five. Figure 2-8 Figure 2-9 Help Menu (Figure 2-10) Accessed from the Main Menu, this option accesses the help system. The About file displays the software version and copyright information (Figure 2-11). The Contents file contains an overview of the software program. (Figure 2-12). 4

9 Figure 2-10 Figure 2-11 Figure 2-12 Check Status Button Selecting this feature allows the user to check the operational status of the ventilator at any time. The ventilator status is displayed on the Status bar on the bottom left side of the Main Menu. (Refer to Figure 2-1) 5

10 Chapter 3 - Getting Ready Setup The Setting parameters should be verified and/or changed before each session. The user must check the ventilator for the cylinder size that is installed and then select the appropriate operating parameter data for the selected cylinder. Refer to the CI Animal Ventilator Instruction Manual Specifications section for cylinder size and parameters. COM Port RS-232 protocol is used for the communication between the CIV-101 unit and the host computer. Standard computers have two RS-232 ports termed Serial ports or COM ports (COM-1 and COM-2). The COM 1 port must be connected to the CIV-101. Refer to the CI Animal Ventilator Instruction Manual in the section of chapter 6 for the RS-232 Option for setting the correct port parameters. 6

11 Chapter 4 Operation Overview The CIV-101 sends data out of its RS-232 port every time it starts and stops. The Operation section of the CIV-101 program interprets the RS-232 data and displays it. Setting parameters, starting, and stopping can be achieved either from the CIV-101 front panel or the computer. Procedure: 1. Prepare the CIV-101 and the subject. 2. Ensure that the values of volume, rate, ratio, pressure high and pressure low in the Settings section of the Main Menu are within correct ranges of the ventilator s current setup. 3. Ensure that the maximum cylinder size in the Setup menu of the Main Menu matches the size of the installed cylinder in the ventilator. 3. Select the Check Status button on the Main Menu to check current ventilator status. If any initial errors are detected, you will be prompted to deal with them. 4. Select the Start button on the Main Menu to begin ventilator operation. 5. Select the Start and Stop buttons on the Main Menu as needed, (You do not have to stop before loading new parameters). 6. To exit the CIVCOM v6.11 software, select the Close button or the Exit option in the File Menu on the Main Menu. 7

12 Chapter 5 - Troubleshooting Communications Error If there are more than one CIVCOM programs running at the same time, a Communications Error will occur and lockup the program until all the other CIVCOM programs are closed. Also if a problem occurs during initial access of the software, a Communication Error dialog box will appear on the screen to alert the user to an existing operational problem. (Figure 4-1). Figure 4-1 When this occurs, check for the following on your computer: 1) Is the right COM-Port selected? 2) Does the COM Port have the right Port Settings data entered? To check and correct, use the following procedure: a. Click on the desk top Start button >> click on Control Panel >> double click on System >> click on Device Manager >> click on Ports (Com & LPT) >> double click on Comm Ports >> double click on Communications Port (COM1) Properties, the dialog box will appear with the correct values as shown in figure 4-2. b. If further adjustment is required, then click on the Advanced button of the Communications Port (COM1) Properties dialog box and the Advanced Port Settings dialog box will appear similar to figure 4-3. These settings are for fine tuning the individual computer as necessary. 13 No Response From Unit Error When the ventilator does not respond to inputs from the computer, a No Response From Unit dialog box will appear on the screen to alert the user to an existing operational problem. See figure 4-4. Figure 4-4 When this occurs, check for the following: 1) Loose, disconnected or damaged RS-232 interface cable. 2) The ventilator is turned off and/or power cord is loose or unplugged. 3) The values programmed at the ventilator s front panel for volume, rate and cylinder size of the ventilator is outside the installed cylinder s range. See CI Ventilator Instruction Manual (specifications section and chapter 3) for correct values. Range Errors When any value for either volume, rate or ratio, are outside the range of the cylinder size selected in the setup menu, a Range Error dialog box will appear and the ventilator will not respond to any changes made at the Main Menu (Figures 4-5, 4-6 & 4-7). The software will automatically insert the highest or lowest value in the Settings section. The user may select any other value within the correct range. Refer to the CI Ventilator Instruction Manual for the correct range settings for the cylinder(s) being used with your ventilator. (See the specifications section and chapter 3). 14 Figure 4-7 Ratio Range Error Upper and lower range settings for pressure high (P/H) (Figure 4-8) and pressure low (P/L) (Figure 4-9) do not depend on cylinder size, and the same action will happen with these when any values are selected outside their ranges.
