PLC Exam 6/18/2014 Name: By signing I agree to abide by the UWA policies governing academic integrity. I. Matching. Match the System memory Data Files to their descriptions. (A) Bit (B) Control (C) Counter (D) Integer (E) Input (F) Output (G) Status (H) Timer 1. Holds 256 words (R6:0 to R6:255) that are used as control registers for advanced PLC instructions such as bit shift and sequencer instructions. 2. Holds 256 words (N7:0 to N7:255) that can be used as temporary storage registers. 3. Holds the output bit status of the output modules. 4. Holds the input bit status of the input modules. 5. Holds information related to the number of timers used in the ladder logic program. 6. Holds information related to counters and can have any address from C5:0 to C5: Holds the flag or status bits of the ladder logic diagram. 8. Has registers that are used by advanced PLC instructions such as bit shift and sequencer instructions. II. True/False. For each false statement replace the underlined word(s) to make the statement true. For true statements you may do nothing or write TRUE. 1. You can place two or more output instructions in series or parallel in a PLC ladder logic rung. 2. You can place two or more input instructions in parallel in a PLC ladder logic rung. 3. In a PLC ladder logic rung, the last instruction must be an input instruction. 4. Input address instructions may be used only once times in a PLC ladder logic diagram. 1 of 7
5. Output address instructions may be used only once in a PLC ladder logic diagram. 6. The user memory segment stores information needed to execute the user program. 7. A proximity switch uses a light emitting diode (LED) and a phototransistor. 8. Level switches are used to open and close contacts in response to changes in liquid flow. 9. Inductive sensors detect the presence of nearby metallic objects by measuring changes in dielectric fields. 10. Ultrasonic sensors produce sound below the normal human hearing threshold of 16 khz and use this sound to detect the distance to an object. 11. In relay logic diagrams, output devices are placed near the right corner of the rung. 12. In relay logic diagrams, output devices can be connected in series. 13. In relay logic diagrams, all the input and output devices must be placed horizontally. 14. A(n) float switch is used in factory environments as an emergency or contact switch when a worker is using both hands for assembling a product. 15. Ports that are either open (off) or closed (on) are double pole input ports. 16. A(n) motor drive simply turns a motor on and off. 2 of 7
17. A(n) capacitive sensors detect the presence of metallic objects using magnetic fields. 18. A(n) solid state is a control device that uses electromagnetism to convert electrical energy into mechanical motion. 19. In an optical sensor, a(n) phototransistor is used to generate light beams in the visible and invisible spectrums using light emitting diodes (LEDs) and laser diodes. 20. Pushbuttons and switches, also called momentary input devices, are independent devices that either allow or disallow electric current to flow through them. 21. The two main sections of motor starters are contacts and thermal protection. 22. In order to change the program, the PLC must be in run mode. 23. A method of testing the PLC system without actually closing or opening input devices is to test the PLC in the forced condition mode. 24. PLC program execution, or program scan flows from left to right on each rung, starting from the top rung and continuing to the bottom rung. 25. An Allen Bradley SLC 500 series PLC has integer words addressed from N7:0 to N7: An Allen Bradley SLC 500 series PLC has counters addressed from T4:0, T4: An Allen Bradley SLC 500 series PLC has numbers addressed from to C5:0 to C5: of 7
III. Relay Logic Diagrams. Draw Relay Logic Diagrams for the following problem description. The master stop switch (MSTOP) is a (NC) pushbutton. A switch (MODE) toggles motor one (M1) between JOG and CONTINOUS operation. When in JOG mode motor one (M1) will run when pressing the black (NO) push button (PBB). In CONTINOUS mode motor one (M1) turns on using the (NO) green pushbutton (PBG) and off using a (NC) red push button (PBR). A white pilot light (White_PLT) indicates JOG mode. A red pilot light (Red_PLT) indicates CONTINOUS mode. A green pilot light (Green_PLT) is on whenever the motor is running. 4 of 7
IV. Relay Logic Diagrams. Draw Relay Logic Diagrams for the following problem description. A master switch (MSW) turns everything off. A green pushbutton (PBG) starts motor one (M1) which runs continuously until the master switch (MSW) shuts it down. A red pushbutton starts motor two (M2) which runs continuously until the master switch (MSW) shuts it down. A green pilot light (Green_PLT) indicates only motor one (M1) is running. A red pilot light (Red_PLT) indicates only motor two (M2) is running. A white pilot light (White_PLT) indicates both motor one (M1) and motor two (M2) are running. 5 of 7
V. PLC Ladder Diagrams. Draw PLC Ladder Diagrams for the following problem descriptions. 6 of 7
VI. PLC Ladder Diagrams. Draw PLC Ladder Diagrams for the following problem descriptions. 7 of 7
