2 Agenda Hay Group is just wrapping up a data center project that promises new levels of reliability and efficiency. The company is replacing its data center in Philadelphia with two new data centers located outside the city, about 100 miles apart from each other and from company headquarters. The challenge we were facing- cost, availability, and reliability We chose to work with the vendors we already knew, Presidio, Cisco, Quatro, Fujitsu, IPR, etc. Although planning was completed last fall the contract was only signed in January and was completed June 30 th. Results/benefits/ Advice to others = Results are great /benefits are plentiful / do not hesitate to move to these technologies.

3 Who is the Hay Group The Hay Group is not a technology company, we are a consumer of technology. We are a human resources consulting firm. We have approximately 3000 users in 100 sites within 47 countries all of which are dependent on the data center. Our products are essentially our thoughts, whether committed to paper or available via websites by subscription, their availability to staff and customers is important. The websites, servers and data housed in these data centers accounts for approximately 70% of the global revenue.

4 Challenge The Hay Group is just like other companies that want to do more with less in a tough economy. Cutting costs Meeting user availability demands Improving reliability Increasing maintainability Maximize efficiency These bullets are repeated in every article, magazine, survey, etc., throughout our industry.

5 Historical Perspective Hay Group has adopted new technology when it perceived it could lower cost while increasing services. This chart depicts 5 projects where the technology changed and the data center cost associated with space, power, HVAC and connectivity has decreased Users Servers Space

6 Implementation Start by identifying the components Network - Internet access, MPLS, dedicated fiber and other connections. Datacenter - Physical environment space, power, and HVAC. Compute capacity necessary to support your applications - Pizza box / blades, CPU, RAM, etc. Storage capacity - High Speed Disk, Controllers, and Fiber Switches. Consider which components you wish to own. Which ones you wish to manage (you could rent), and Which ones you would rather leave to someone else.

7 The Process By using virtualization along with the latest server, storage and networking technologies, Hay Group has a setup where each data center can back up the other in whole or in part with just a few mouse clicks. Ultimately, private cloud technologies offered improved performance and backup capabilities, and at a lower cost. Private cloud technologies - what is that? Public & private networks, facility space, infrastructure, pizza box /blade servers or compute resources, public or private storage area networks SAN. In private clouds you maintain control, security is the same as hosting or co-locating with 3 rd party data center vendors.

8 Advice I like to use the word ZONE As an easy way to define a subset or group. Can be used with any one of the previous components. Could be used to help clarify what Private Cloud means to you or me or Hay Group. So lets breakdown the components into zones.

15 Results We started out to address the typical concerns of controlling cost, increasing availability, improving reliability & maintainability, as well as overall efficiency. Results/ROI: Increased services for less cost than any other way. It is reportedly (by IT staff ) to be 80% faster. Completed with no business interruptions. Our customers have reported the applications are faster. Our technical confidence is sufficiently high to endeavor to bring overseas operations into this datacenter.
