9 A NEW CENTURY, A NEW BEGINNING On the eve of its centennial year, the Monroe Building completed an epic restoration led by a committed new owner and honored by the Chicago Architecture Foundation. Walk the halls of the Monroe Building, and you touch history. Created as a gateway to the Loop, the 16-story, steel-frame structure was designed by Holabird & Roche and commissioned by Shepherd Brooks, who also developed the Monadnock, Rookery and Marquette buildings. A series of well-known architects, among them Frank Lloyd Wright, took space under the Monroe Building s signature gables. Its dramatic lobby features tile work by acclaimed Rookwood Pottery, once the largest woman-owned manufacturing company in the country, with a cache to rival Tiffany s. Like many historic office structures, the Monroe Building went through renovations that buried much of its original design detail. But the sands of time reversed when J&J Arnaco acquired the property in 2007 and began work to restore the terra-cotta exterior and green Spanish tile roof. In a feat of architectural archeology, the restoration team stripped away drywall and bronze panels to reveal lobby tile work and iron elevator grilles still intact. Historic photos and design archives helped replicate missing transom grilles and lighting fixtures. Remarkably, the restoration team included some of the companies involved with the building s construction, including Rookwood Pottery, roofer Ludowici Tile and Holabird & Root, successor firm to the original architect. Together, they have revived the Monroe Building s luster and restored its architectural legacy.
