Emerging Trends in Backup & Recovery South Texas ACP Chapter February 2005 Meeting February 8, 2005 Copyright 2004 Corig elan, LLC
Abstract The disciplines of High Availability and Disaster Recovery are typically found in separate IT organizations. High Availability or HA is traditionally in the IT Infrastructure Group while Disaster Recovery or DR is often part of the Business Continuity Group. Both disciplines deal with ensuring that an application is made available to the user community; HA for immediate fail-over typically without human response and DR for those cases where a site or regionally failure has occurred. Is it possible to combine the two strategies for continuity of operations? This session will examine real-life solutions where organizations have leveraged the two together to improve operational resiliency and improve the availability of an application while reducing cost. 3 AGENDA 1. Downtime & Disasters a) A Historical Look 2. HA v DR 3. Solving for Different Types of Losses 4. Technology Recovery Solutions a) Turn Local Clusters Into Geo-Clusters b) Re-Leverage QA & R&D Assets for DR 5. Emerging Data Protection Options Page - 3
Downtime & Disasters A Historical Perspective Is It DR or HA? Page - 4
Leading Causes of Downtime 1998 Survey (prior to rise in HA practices) by Contingency Planning & Management magazine shows that preventable factors are the leading causes of failure. Note three leading causes: Power Failure Hardware Failure Telecom Failure Leading Causes of Downtime Problem Power Failure Hardware Failure Telecom Failure Software Human Error Frequency of Occurrence 72.2% 52.2% 46.0% 43.1% 34.4% Lightning 33.7% Page - 5
Leading Causes of Disaster Declaration Prior to 1999 & rise in HA practices over half of a declared disasters were HA related 51% of declarations were preventable : 22% Hardware Failure 17% Power Failure 4% Miscellaneous 3% Telecom Failure 2% HVAC 2% SW Failure 1% Data Center Move Comdisco Disaster Declaration Reasons (1998 & Prior) Problem Hardware Failure Hurricane Power Outage Flood Fire/Explosion Bomb Earthquake Miscellaneous (security, theft, etc.) Telecom Failure Environment (HVAC) Software Failure Data Center Move Tornado Frequency of Occurrence 22% 20% 17% 13% 6% 5% 4% 4% 3% 2% 2% 1% 1% Page - 6
High Availability v Disaster Recovery Conflicted Disciplines Page - 7
High Availability High Availability (HA) is concerned with providing near continuous service Field has introduced new evaluation terminology: 9 s of Availability (a measurement of uptime) N the need N+1 the need plus one spare 2N twice the need in parallel SPOF : Single Point Of Failure Focus is on eliminating equipment faults as a cause of downtime If you only meet the Need, you have a SPOF Page - 8
High Availability Continuous / Near Continuous Server Operation Provided by: 2N architecture; e.g. Tandem Stratus Others N+1 architecture; e.g. Clustering: MSCS Veritas Others SAN / Disk 2N: RAID-1, On Floor Mirror in a Separate Disk Array N+1: ~ RAID-2 thru 5 Standard in Power, Network, & HVAC is a 2N Architecture Page - 9
2N Power Infrastructure Generator Electric Company ATS ATS UPS UPS Breaker A Breaker B Breaker A Breaker B PDU A PDU B STS STS Server Generator Tier-3 Infrastructure, 2N redundant; completely parallel; No need to take down application for power maintenance Page - 10
Disaster Recovery / Business Continuity DR Measurements in Units of Downtime / Lost Data RTO RPO Traditionally measured in days or hours BC Concerned with Continuity of Operations Page - 11
Evolving Recovery Times By Tiers Tier Recovery Time Window Seconds/Minutes < 24 hours hours 72+ hours As Time & Resources Permits Critical Requirements Page - 12
Disaster Recovery / Business Continuity DR/BC has Traditionally Provided Coverage for Losses of Services DR Plan was not typically invoked unless the expected length of the outage was greater than the expected recovery time Although there are always Preventers/PreEmpters Evolving Focus to Provide Protection for Site & Region Losses Near 0 RTO & RPO is Driving BC into HA Territory Business Continuity is Blurring the Distinction of Responsibility with High Availability Practice Page - 13
Loss Strategies Where Does HA End & DR Start? Page - 14
Tiers of Losses Loss of Equipment Technology Failure Loss of Facility Facility is not accessible or usable Loss of the Region Wide spread outage Page - 15
Types of Losses; Frequency & Duration of Occurrence Disaster/Loss Type Loss of Equipment Loss of Facility & Equipment Loss of Region Facility Intact Loss of Region & Facility Relative Duration of Recovery Shortest Long Short to Medium Very Long Relative Frequency of Occurrence Frequent Occasionally Seldom Very Rare Page - 16
Rules of Thumb for Tiered Strategies 1.Invest the most in things that are more likely to occur 2.It will cost you more for things that last for longer durations 3.Try to develop Recovery Strategies that can be shared between outage types 4.Extend RTO for things that rarely occur 5.Extend RTO for things that also effect your customers/vendors 6.Have other contingencies for things that rarely occur Page - 17
The High Availability (HA) Discipline Addresses Preventable Outage Causes Disaster Recovery Has Evolved Into Providing Contingencies for Non- Preventable Causes Page - 18
Question: Can One Solution Solve for Both HA & DR? Page - 19

Re-Leverage Equipment Develop an Internal Hotsite Pool by Reusing Development & Test Gear in a Disaster as Production Philosophy: The personality of a machine is determined by the OS, Applications, and Data it connects to You can implement this philosophy by: 1. Split Production from Development & QA 2. Employing Diskless Servers (Boot and Data) Variation Local JBOD for page & swap 3. Re-zoning/Connecting to Alternate Personality ATOD/ATOT Spread HA Equipment across sites Page - 25
