Indiana Height Modernization Leveraging State Investment A Shovel- Ready Infrastructure Project
Height Modernization What is it? How can it benefit Indiana?
The Problem Government spending in the tens of millions to correct projects affected by changing land surfaces affected by floods, earthquakes and other natural phenomena Use of 750,000 precisely located, in-ground or monumented reference points installed over the past 200 years to measure heights is inadequate to meet our current technological needs. Classical line-of-sight measurements do not provide real-time accuracy for today s positioning technologies and applications (including precision agriculture, efficient marine transportation and zero visibility landings of aircraft). Photo Credit: Glenn J. Ward Flooding in Columbus, Indiana, June 2008.
Benefits More accurate modeling of flooding. Better delineation of flood plains. Significant time savings in field surveying and aerial mapping. Improved aircraft NAVAIDS, and safer approach and landing procedures Advanced surface transportation control and monitoring. Highly efficient fertilizer and pesticide spreading, resulting in reduced run-off water pollution. Increased accuracy for improved resource management decision making. Improved disaster preparedness and earthquake detection. Makes elevation determinations cheaper, faster, and accurate Photo Credit: Sara Sargent/Medill A worker at Indiana-based Triad Mining Inc. cleans equipment involved in underground coal extraction.
Additional Benefits
Height Modernization: Overview Program within NOAA's National Geodetic Survey (NGS) that provides accurate height information by integrating Global Positioning System (GPS) technology with existing survey techniques. Can efficiently establish accurate elevations for all types of positioning and navigational needs. Photo Credit: Courtesy of FlickR, posted by johnnyalive Benton County Windfarm.
Height Modernization in Indiana Phase 1 Supports INDOT s Investment in the INDOT CORS Establishes Orthometric Heights on 47 INDOT CORS Stations Establishes Orthometric Heights on 53 Horizontal HARN Stations Improves Accuracy of Geoid Improves Accuracy of Elevations via GPS Leverage INDOT s Investment in INDOT CORS Anticipated Cost: $1.2m
The INDOT CORS 18 Primary CORS Stations to be Installed Circles Centered on Primary INDOT CORS Stations Circles Represent 30 km Coverage Primary INDOT CORS Stations to be Incorporated into NGS Cooperative CORS Network
The INDOT CORS Provide GPS data for computing positions of remote GPS receivers. Tie all projects to permanent reference points. (State Plane Coordinate System) Airborne GPS for computing position of camera at instant each aerial photograph is taken. Saves time. (recon & observations) Increased productivity. Quality Control. (good position on base)

The INDOT CORS and Height Modernization Investments in Indiana Geodetic Infrastructure
Height Mod Phase I Establish Elevations on INDOT Primary CORS Stations Establish Elevations on INDOT Secondary CORS Stations Establish Elevations on NGS Horizontal HARN Stations
Height Modernization in Indiana Subsequent Phases Set Additional Bench Marks via GPS Recover Existing Bench Marks Establish Horizontal Control on Existing Bench Marks Establish Geodetic Control in Support of Highway Construction Projects Establish Clearinghouse for State and Local Geodetic Control Obtain Gravity Observations
