27 Tier- (-1): Application protection #1 GOAL: First defense starts within the application (e.g. SharePoint deleted Single items point and of versioning, failure (if the app deleted fails ) items, Active Directory deleted items, SQL log transaction ) Consume production storage (but limited) Leverages the application No impact on the hypervisor Fast restores Possibly user restore possibilities

28 Tier-0: Storage snapshots #1 GOAL: High-frequency copies with low impact on production Single point of failure (inside the same storage they protect) Consume precious production storage No application consistency (or hard to have) A volume contains multiple VMs Leverage storage performance Low impact on the hypervisor Fast restores! Content is non deduplicated With Veeam, you can add application consistency

29 Tier-1: Small and fast JBOD #1 GOAL: Offer fast restores! Hold few restore points The vast majority of restores come from the last week A proper server with Windows or Linux (runs Veeam data mover locally) Multicore CPU and good amount of RAM Local disks or DAS Mix SSD and HDD

30 Tier-2: Large and cheap disk storage #1 GOAL: Extend retention period Still local and on disk to allow decent RPO and RTO Any disk solution with low $/GB SAN Deduplication appliance NAS Software solutions

31 Tier-3: Off-site archival #1 GOAL: Extend retention AND offer off-site protection Can be added after tier-2 or directly after tier-1 Tape Requires manual activities to go off site Large amount of data can be moved on restores Cloud Directly reachable via Internet connection A dumb storage space or an active component? Remote compute power allows direct restores from cloud repositories
