The 1960 s Data Centres 1945: The US Government developed a system known as ENIAC (Electronic Numerator, Integrator, Analyser, and Computer) Weighed 30 tons Required 1800 sq. ft. of data centre floor space Required 6 full time technicians to keep the system running. Able to process 5000 operations per second By the 1960 s computer usage was becoming more commercially available, with most companies sharing computing power (the original colo) An example was American Airlines who teamed up with IBM to develop the Sabre System (IBM 7090 Computers) in a specially designed data centre in New York that was able to handle 84,000 telephone calls per day. The 1970 s Data Centres 1971: Intel released the world s first commercial microprocessor : US data centres began documenting formal disaster recovery plans 1977: The world s first commercially available local area network was born (ARCnet) and was beta tested at Chase Manhattan Bank Token Ring System Supporting 255 computers supporting data rates of 255Mbps Mainframes up until this time needed special cooling and in the late 1970 s air-cooled computers started moving in offices Consequently, the need for data centres started to die. The 1980 s Data Centres The computer industry exploded with the release of the IBM range of personal computers Computers were installed everywhere, with little or no thought to environmental and operating requirements 1985: IBM provided more than $30 million in products & support to a super-computer facility at Cornell University 1998: IBM launches the IBM Application System (AS/400) and quickly becomes one of the world s most popular business operating system As more & more companies invested in Information Technology the need for management & control grew to support IT resources The need for a data centre returned. 2

The 1990 s Data Centres Microcomputers (servers) started to find homes in old style computer rooms that were now being called data centres Companies were starting to centralise their own computing needs and networking equipment The boom of the data centre came during the dot-com bubble as companies needed faster internet connectivity to offer non-stop operations and to establish a presence on the internet Many companies started investing in large scale data centres to support their business needs Hosted data centre operations started to appear (Example: RackSpace opened their first data centre to business in The 2000 s Data Centres As of 2007, the average data centre power usage in the UK uses as much power as every home in Holland According to generic research more than 6 million new servers are deployed every year Data centres account for more than 2% of US energy consumption and the demand is growing year on year Since 1999 the US Federal Government number of data centres has risen from 432 to over 1, : The US Pentagon adopt virtualisation and reduce the number of servers on average from 1000 to : The White House announced the Federal Cloud Initiative. The Changing Face of the Data Centre Data Growth Stored data is growing at 40% 50% per year IP Traffic is growing at 30% - 40% per year Server growth is expected to grow 10 fold over the next ten years Storage growth is expected to grow 50 fold over the same period File Storage growth is expected to grow by 75 fold over the same period. 5 Big Data 1.7 Zettabyte s (One Trillion Gb) Estimated Global Internet Traffic by 2017 Source: Cisco Visual Network Index Agenda The growing world of internet based communication The changing world of fibre Getting it right for your data centre Saving you money and improving your system & flexibility by design The DC Environment We expect the DC to run efficiently and meet all of the demands placed upon it (growing speed & increasing density) Today we already have: - 10GBase-T (Copper) - 40GBase-SR4 (Fibre) Array connectivity - 8 Strands of fibre - 100GBase-SR10 Multiple Array connectivity - 20 strands of fibre 5

Copper TIA,ISO & IEEE 802.3bq have Category 8 under development to support 40GBase-T (shielded solution only) - Target date Q4 2015/Q Cabling to support: -2 GHz - 2 Connector with maximum Channel of 30m TIA & ISO Class I will be RJ45 Style connectors ISO Class II will be non RJ45 such as the Siemon TERA - Significant performance advantages that could lead to power savings - 25GBase-T needs the same as 40G Fibre IEEE 802.3ba 40Gbase-SR4, 8 fibre Array connectivity required The standards detail the maximum losses and distances Application Fibre Type Maximum Loss db Maximum Length M 40GBase-SR4 100GBase-SR10 100GBase-SR4 OM OM OM OM Fibre Proprietary Duplex systems from Cisco (BiDi) and Arista (Univ) Application Fibre Type Maximum Loss (db) Maximum Length (M) 40GBase-UNIV (Arista) 40GBase-BiDi (Cisco) OM OM SM OM

Fibre Channel Again, as the speeds go up so the distance and the maximum losses reduce Application Fibre Type Maximum Loss (db) Maximum Length (M) 8 Gbit FC 16 Gbit FC 32 Gbit FC OM OM OM OM OM OM Is your current infrastructure suitable Whilst many quote typical losses it is important to specify actual maximum losses In this example: - Each LC loss 0.25dB = 0.25 x 4 = 1.00dB - Each MTP 0.40dB = 0.4 x 4 = 1.60dB - x 150 = 0.45dB - Total Loss 3.05dB - This does not even meet the performance requirements for 10GBase-SR, 40GBase-SR4 & 100GBase-SR4/10 Low Loss Systems Low loss systems make sense In this example: - Each LC loss 0.15dB = 0.15 x 4 = 0.60dB - Each MTP 0.20dB = 0.2 x 4 = 0.80dB - x 150 = 0.45dB Application Fibre Type Maximum Loss (db) Maximum Length (M) 40GBase-UNIV (Arista) OM OM GBase-SR4 OM GBase-BiDi (Cisco) OM GBase SR10 OM

Agenda The growing world of internet based communication The changing world of fibre Getting it right for your data centre Saving you money and improving your system & flexibility by design Top of Rack Architecture and Cloud Computing You need to design in resiliency! Do you opt for a 24 or a 48 switch? How many switches do you need in rack? How many servers do you have in a rack? Top of Rack Over Subscription Number of Switches Total Ports Port Over-Subscription PDU Top of Rack 20 x 48 Port Switch Top of Rack Over Subscription Number of Switches Total Ports Port Over-Subscription PDU Top of Rack 20 x 48 Port Switch Any to All 2 x Chassis with 6 x 48 Port Blades

Top of Rack versus End of Row Often, the topology of choice is servers running through Top of Rack switches using QSFP style cords etc Top of Rack versus End of Row Often, the topology of choice is servers running through Top of Rack switches using QSFP style cords etc A Zoned Approach (EoR) A true infrastructure modular approach Can share switch ports among a whole row / DC room depending on the chosen zone architecture e.g. End-of-Row, Centralized Patch Zone... From Day 1: Save on Access Switches and related power / cooling / licensing / maintenance / space costs Save on FO uplinks to Aggregation / Core Switches and... Always move/add/change an active equipment to any cab with available ports, while connecting it to any other port in the DC just by using a patch cord. 10
