2 Description Cisco MDS 9000 Family Switching Modules deliver scalability The Cisco MDS 9000 Family is designed to deliver high-port density, with scaling from 16 to 528 ports per chassis with the MDS 9513 (announced separately). Because building a large-scale storage network requires more than just high-port density, Cisco offers innovative features that make multilayer storage networks a reality. Virtual SANs (VSANs), Inter-VSAN Routing, advanced traffic management, hardware-enabled serviceability, and security features make the Cisco MDS 9000 Family the platform of choice for businesses requiring high scalability. VSANs Well-suited for efficient and secure SAN consolidation, VSANs allow efficient storage network use by creating hardware-based isolated environments within a single physical SAN fabric or switch. Each VSAN can be zoned as a typical SAN and maintains its own fabric services for added scalability and resilience. VSANs allow the cost of SAN infrastructure to be shared among more users, while ensuring absolute segregation of traffic and retaining independent control of configuration on a VSAN-by-VSAN basis. Integrated SAN routing In another step toward helping you deploy efficient, cost-effective, consolidated storage networks, the Cisco MDS 9000 Fibre Channel Switching Modules also support Inter-VSAN Routing (IVR) function for Fibre Channel. IVR enables selective transfer of data traffic between specific initiators and targets on different VSANs while maintaining isolation of control traffic within each VSAN. With IVR, data can transit VSAN boundaries while maintaining control plane isolation, thereby helping to maintain fabric stability and availability. Integrated mainframe support Cisco 1/2/4 Gbps Fibre s are mainframe-ready with full support for IBM System z FICON and Linux environments at 1, 2, or 4 Gbps. Qualified By IBM for attachment to FICON-enabled devices in a System z operating environment, Cisco 4 Gbps Fibre s support transport of the FICON protocol at 1, 2, or 4 Gbps in both cascaded and noncascaded fabrics, as well as intermix of FICON and Open Systems FCP traffic on the same switch. VSANs simplify intermix of SAN resources between z/os, mainframe Linux, and open systems environments to enable increased SAN use and simplified SAN management. VSAN-based intermix mode eliminates the uncertainty and instability often associated with zoning-based intermix techniques. VSAN-based management access controls simplify partitioning of SAN management responsibilities between mainframe and open systems environments, enhancing security. You can manage FICON VSANs using the integrated Cisco Fabric Manager, Cisco CLI or via IBM CUP-enabled management tools including SA/390, RMF, and DCM. The following new optional features are available for the MDS 9000 family (IBM 2062): 12-Port 1/2/4 Gbps Fibre Channel Switching Module (#2412) For the most demanding storage networking environments, this switching module is designed to deliver great performance. The 4 Gbps ports deliver up to 96 Gbps of full-duplex bandwidth, making the 12-port switching module ideal for attachment of the highest performance 4 Gbps-enabled storage subsystems and for Inter-Switch Link (ISL) connections between switches. With its multiprotocol capability, the Cisco 12-port Fibre Channel Switching Module integrates FICON protocol, FICON CUP management, and switch cascading to enable mainframe connectivity. VSANs enable hardware-based separation of Fibre Channel and FICON traffic switched on a single physical SAN. 24-Port 1/2/4 Gbps Fibre Channel Switching Module (#2424) For high-performance storage networking environments, this switching module is designed to deliver a balance of performance and scalability. Twenty-four auto-sensing 1, 2, and 4 Gbps ports deliver the sustained bandwidth required to meet the performance demands of today s enterprise-class storage arrays and servers. Bandwidth is allocated across four 6-port port-groups, providing 24 Gbps of full-duplex bandwidth per port-group. Port Bandwidth Reservation, a Cisco-unique feature available on the Cisco 24-port 4 Gbps Fibre Channel Switching Module enables 1, 2, or 4 Gbps of switching bandwidth to be dedicated to a port, enabling optimal bandwidth allocation for any application, including the highest performance interswitch links. By combining Cisco 12-, 24-, and 48-port 4 Gbps Fibre Channel Switching Modules in a single, modular chassis, you can design cost/performance optimized storage networks in a wide range of application environments. This application-optimized approach to port deployment can reduce the number of switches and inter-switch links required in a storage network, in many cases help eliminate the need for less efficient core-edge network topologies. Fewer switches simplify management and reduce deployment and operational costs. 48-Port 1/2/4 Gbps Fibre Channel Switching Module (#2448) Storage network consolidation moves to a new level with the transport optimization provided by this switching module. Network architects can allocate bandwidth optimally to meet specific application requirements while decreasing the switching footprint and lowering overall storage network deployment cost. The Cisco 48-port 4-Gbps Fibre Channel Switching Module delivers 96 Gbps of total bandwidth and the industry s highest line-card port density, enabling an 528 ports per chassis in the MDS 9513 (announced separately). Bandwidth is allocated across four 12-port port-groups, providing 24 Gbps of full-duplex bandwidth per port-group. Port Bandwidth Reservation, enables the flexible bandwidth allocation needed to meet a wide range of application requirements. By combining Cisco 12-, 24-, and 48-port 4 Gbps Fibre Channel Switching Modules in a single modular chassis, you can design cost/performance optimized storage networks in a wide range of application environments. This application-optimized approach to port deployment can reduce the number of switches and interswitch links required in a storage network, in many cases eliminating the need for less efficient core-edge network topologies
3 4-Port 10 Gbps Fibre Channel Switching Module (#2404) This switching module is designed to deliver attractive performance with 10 gigabit per second link bandwidth, 96 Gbps of continuous aggregate bandwidth per module, and the intelligence and advanced features required to make multilayer bandwidth of 2 Gbps Fibre Channel products. The Cisco 4-Port 10 Gbps Fibre Channel Switching Module includes hardware-enabled innovations designed to improve performance, scalability, availability, security, and manageability of storage networks. The Cisco 4-Port 10 Gbps Fibre Channel Switching Module is hot-swappable and includes hot-swappable, X2 form-factor pluggable, SC-type interfaces. You can configure individual ports with shortwave or longwave X2 optical transceivers for connectivity up to 10 km (6.2 mi). Up to 250 buffer credits per port are supported for maximum extensibility without requiring additional licensing. With the optional Cisco Enterprise Package, up to 5000 buffer credits can be allocated to an individual port, enabling full link bandwidth over thousands of kilometers with no degradation in link utilization. Ultrahigh per port bandwidth makes the Cisco 4-port 10 Gbps Fibre Channel Switching Module ideal for ISL attachment, both within the datacenter and between datacenters across metro optical networks. When compared with ISL connections that use 2 Gbps Fibre Channel links, ISLs using Cisco 10 Gbps links can reduce ISL cabling cost by up to 80%. With its multiprotocol capability, the 4-port 10 Gbps Fibre Channel Switching Module seamlessly integrates FICON protocol, FICON CUP management, and switch cascading to enable mainframe connectivity. VSANs allow hardware-based separation of Fibre Channel and FICON traffic switched on a single physical SAN. Technical information Physical specifications: For information on technical specifications of Cisco products, including operating environment and physical specifications, visit Limitations: There are configuration limitations when using Generation 1 (Gen-1) line cards in a Cisco MDS 9513 Director. Cisco MDS 9500 Supervisor-2 Module is designed to provide support for up to 528 Fibre Channel ports in a single Cisco MDS 9513 director chassis. The Supervisor-2 Module supports a mixture of Generation 2 (Gen-2) 4 and 10 Gbps Fibre Channel Switching line cards and (Gen-1) IP Services, Storage Services and 2 Gbps Fibre Channel Switching line cards, which helps provide director investment protection. However, when Gen-1 line cards (#2116, #2132, #2208, #2214, #2400) are used with Gen-2 line cards (#2404, #2412, #2424, #2448), the maximum number of addressable connections is limited to 252. For example, if a Gen-1 Storage Services Module with 32 Fibre Channel ports is installed, only nine Gen-2 24-port Fibre Channel Modules with 216 ports may also be installed. In this Gen-1 and Gen-2 line card example, only 10 of the director feature slots and only 248 of potential 528 Fibre Channel ports may configured. Port Index Availability: The Cisco MDS 9500 Multilayer Directors are designed to operate with any combination of Cisco MDS 9000 modules. However, you should be aware of the maximum port availability your chassis can support. A port index is an internally assigned number that Cisco SAN-OS uses to switch data packets within the director or fabric switch. When the maximum number of port indexes is reached in a chassis, any modules remaining or added to the chassis will not boot up. The number of physical ports on a Fibre Channel module is equal to its port index. However, for Gigabit Ethernet modules (IPS-8, IPS-4, and MPS-14/2 ), one physical port is equal to four port indexes (virtual ports). The Gigabit Ethernet modules use one port for iscsi and the remaining three ports for Fibre Channel IP tunnels. Table 1 lists the physical ports and port indexes (virtual ports) available per Cisco MDS 9000 module. 6 Using any combination of modules that include a Gen-1 module limits the port index availability to 252 on the Cisco MDS 9513 and Cisco MDS 9509 Directors. Gen-1 modules use contiguous port indexes where the system assigns a block of port index numbers contiguously starting from slot 1. Table 2 shows a valid sample configuration for maximum capacity within the port index limits. The table lists a mixture of Gen-1 and Gen-2 modules on a Cisco MDS 9509 Director.
