Advancing the Army Geospatial Enterprise (AGE) through the AGE Node Presented by: Daniel Visone, Directorate Chief, Systems & Acquisition Support Directorate 22July2015 US Army Corps of Engineers BUILDING STRONG FOUNDATION DATA REACH BACK SUPPORT SYSTEMS INTEGRATION ENABLE HORIZONTAL / VERTICAL EXCHANGE 1
What is the AGE Node? Provides simulated COE: Data Center (DC) Computing Environment (CE) Command Post (CP) CE (e.g. DCGS-A, CPOF, GCCS-A) Mounted (M) CE (e.g. JCR, JBC-P, TIGR) Mobile Handheld (M/HH) CE (e.g. NettWarrior) Sensor (S) CE (e.g. Integrated Sensor Architecture (ISA) Provides environment to: 8 Army Acquisition Systems 14 research projects 3 reference implementations 201 Virtual Machines (VMs) Evaluate/validate proposed geospatial architectures, current and emerging standards /standards implementations, and proposed Tactics, Techniques and Procedures (TTPs) as well as conduct technology assessments in support of the AGE and COE Experiment, integrate and engineer Research and Development (R&D) efforts to ensure interoperability within the COE, providing risk-mitigation for technology transfer Collaborate with industry and academia to enhance GIS technology Support Geospatial System Interoperability Assessment and Certification Simulates the fielded systems in a lab environment to enable the AGE FOUNDATION DATA REACH BACK SUPPORT SYSTEMS INTEGRATION ENABLE HORIZONTAL / VERTICAL EXCHANGE 2

Geospatial R&D AGE Node Assessments Facilitating and accelerating transition of Research against WarFighter gaps while minimizing risk and cost to the Program Manager FOUNDATION DATA REACH BACK SUPPORT SYSTEMS INTEGRATION ENABLE HORIZONTAL / VERTICAL EXCHANGE 6
Army Issue Lack of SSGF Standards Support Across Mission Command Systems Distributed Common Ground System - Army Command Post of the Future (CPOF) GCCS-A TIGR NW Client WMS is not supported by JCR, JBC-P, and NettWarrior, therefore could not be displayed without manual conversion TIGR can only display a single WMS connection at a time; local maps or WMS, not both AGE Node can be used to highlight programs that have not supported or implemented standard geospatial services (e.g., WMS, WFS, WCS, ) in the Army s Common Operating Environment FOUNDATION DATA REACH BACK SUPPORT SYSTEMS INTEGRATION ENABLE HORIZONTAL / VERTICAL EXCHANGE 7
Army Issue Lack of a Common Overlay standard displayed on SSGF Standard KML Overlay Acoustic Sensor Model (Human/Tank) Manual Conversion Needed (10 Min) Distributed Common Ground System - Army Command Post of the Future (CPOF) Mission Command Web Client JBC-P Client NW Client Too many interpretations of Standards: Why Standards, and Implementation of the Standards, Open to Interpretation Solution - Adoption of Open Standards - NSG/ASG Profiles for Those Standards - Open Geospatial Consortium Profiles for Those Standards AGE Node can be leveraged to highlight Geospatial Interoperability issues due to inconsistent implementation of Geospatial Standards by Army Programs FOUNDATION DATA REACH BACK SUPPORT SYSTEMS INTEGRATION ENABLE HORIZONTAL / VERTICAL EXCHANGE 8
Army Issue Moving Geospatial Data to Disconnected, Intermittent, and Low-Bandwidth (DIL) Environment Dozens of DOD/Army mobile/hh device applications requiring unique map data Expensive to develop and maintain duplicate, proprietary map stores for each application Lack of Network Bandwidth at tactical level to stream SSGF basemap and image data Continuously streaming maps over tactical networks rapidly drains the battery Storage on mobile/hh devices is limited Typical AOI will be thousands of square KMs of map/imagery coverage with additional high res image insets. No standard (prior to Geopackage) addressed distribution and direct-use of SSGF on mobile/handheld (M/HH) devices. FOUNDATION DATA REACH BACK SUPPORT SYSTEMS INTEGRATION ENABLE HORIZONTAL / VERTICAL EXCHANGE 9
AGE Node GeoPackage Support Assisted NettWarrior Program with implementing support for reading/writing geopackages Evaluated geopackages from data providers with NettWarrior (ex: Deployable Map of the World (NGA), Esri, Digital Globe) Developed specifications for handling multiple imagery products at different scales within a single geopackage, and integrated support into NettWarrior Integrated and tested the AGC-built geopackage validation tool in order to assess compliance with Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) specification AGE Node can support the SSGF Content Management CONOPS and workflows from National to Tactical to include the DIL environment FOUNDATION DATA REACH BACK SUPPORT SYSTEMS INTEGRATION ENABLE HORIZONTAL / VERTICAL EXCHANGE 10
AGE Node Content Management Evaluation istore Evaluation Image Product Library replacement ArcGIS Earth Evaluation ArcGIS Portal / GeoPortal Testing Supporting evaluation of GOTS, COTS, and Open Source Applications for Operational Use FOUNDATION DATA REACH BACK SUPPORT SYSTEMS INTEGRATION ENABLE HORIZONTAL / VERTICAL EXCHANGE 11
User Jury Assessments Hosted AMSAA-led user jury evaluating COTS vs GOTS cost savings: The Soldiers use of COTS with no customization The Soldiers use of COTS with user created geospatial models for loading of data The Soldiers use of a custom GOTS tool that requires updates be made at each update of the COTS products ArcGIS Data Loading Model ArcGIS Out-of-the-Box DCGS-A Geodata Loader Application Data Source Directory GeoData VM Load Data into Raster Catalog WMS Services Updated Provided a hands-on, flexible environment for unbiased technology evaluation FOUNDATION DATA REACH BACK SUPPORT SYSTEMS INTEGRATION ENABLE HORIZONTAL / VERTICAL EXCHANGE 12
