12 SQL (Structured Query Language) A language to define database structures, insert/update/delete rows and to query a relational database Widely known in IT; industry standard Small (?) differences between MySQL, MS SQL Server, MS Access, Oracle, DB2,... PATSTAT/PISE uses MySQL dialect; soon to change to MS SQL Server dialect For "occasional users" SQL can be generated graphically / with assistants (e. g. MS Access) 12

18 Linking tables (1) In PATSTAT, patent data is broken into multiple tables. So, typically you have to query multiple tables to get useful answers. Luckily, tables can be joined. The JOIN is a very powerful feature of SQL and you will use it for most queries. One JOIN clause can connect 2 tables. To connect more tables, multiple JOIN clauses will be used. 18
