5 Teaching with ipad 1. What is inside? This guide book is intended to share experiences in using ipad for teaching from the authors. It is not, by any means, comprehensive. It is provided as a springboard for people wants to try out this tool to help improving teaching and learning of students. In turn, your valuable experience using this tool are also very much welcome. Drop us a message at : kuntinee.m@chula.ac.th The present work is inspired by Teaching with guided slide initiated Assoc. Prof. Pairod Singhatanadgid. The use of ipad is just a way to expand the teaching technique to the mass of lecturers in a more cost-effective way. Interested readers should be referred to 1

6 2. What do you need? For starters, all the hardware you need are: an ipad, a VGA cord and a stylus. Suggestion for ipad For the purpose of teaching with ipad, there is practically no difference between ipad2 and the new ipad. The quad-core graphic processor in the new ipad renders image marginally faster for apps involved in teaching. The new Retina display is easy to eyes but enhances nothing on the screen. So buy the new ipad if you will buy a new one, keep the ipad2 if you already have it since it will do the job. Suggestion for stylus I've tried three of the stylus brands offered on Amazon: The $15.00; the $11.99 acase; and the cheap three-pack "Universal Touch creen 2

7 It is easy to tell you which not to buy: the cheap ones. The rubber tips on them have too much friction. You can't write or draw easily; you literally feel like the Stylus is getting stuck on the screen. Guaranteed, one zillion percent, you will hate it. Now, to the Boxwave vs. the acase. This isn't just a draw; there's not even a fight, because the two products are exactly the same. So, which to buy? The acase is three dollars cheaper, but it only comes in black. That's it. 9 3. What do you do BEFORE class? The ipad is a tablet hence best used for content viewing & presentation. The creation of content is best left to desktop computers. So work with your desktop computer to prepare materials for class room presentation. This section contains suggestions in preparing the files for teaching. The original files can be PowerPoint presentation files, words file, jpg. files, etc. All files have to be converted to pdf files and these files will be used for presentation with annotation or record into mpeg file. After finished teaching, the pdf files with annotations can be uploaded for students. 3.1 file conversion - Print files to pdf Options for pdf conversion are Acrobat pdf, PDFcreator (freeware). 5

10 3.2 file transfer Using Dropbox or Google Drive (a) Install Dropbox or Google Drive (if prefer to transfer files by using Dropbox or Google Docs) to the computer. You can access files later by syncing to the computer. (b) Copy files to Dropbox or Google Docs (WIFI connection) or upload files to dropbox or Google Docs website 6

12 (d) Open files from Dropbox or Google Drive Apps on ipad. Then, choose open in to any teaching apps in ipad. nong document sub-folder 8

13 3.2 File management Using FileApps (a) Install FileApp to ipad (free or paid version) (b) Install itunes and DiskAid to computer 9

16 Finish copying (c) Open FileApp in ipad, the files is already stored to the ipad and can open in to other apps. 12

17 4. What do you do IN class? By employing the guided slide teaching technique, a lecturer can prepare and present materials in class in a more effective way. Once the material is prepared in pdf and downloaded into the ipad, presenting the pdf to the screen is just two snaps away. Once you come in a class, one snap to connect the VGA cord to the ipad and one snap to connect the VGA cord to the other end of VGA cord of the LCD projector and there we go! 4.1 PDF viewing Using good reader a versatile multi-format file viewer. With this app, you can open in to it virtually any types of file.pdf,.doc,.ppt,.xls, audio and video. 13

18 4.2 PDF annotation Using good notes the current must have app to annotate pdf files. The killer feature is the text box. It enables one to write anywhere in the page at different scalings from the input pane at the bottom of the page. Versatile text box Using this app, you can even add blank pages at will. This feature is very convenient when dealing with long derivations. Or when you come across big ideas and really want to explain it immediately. Index / Export options 14

19 What the text box does help is the posture at which you write/ annotate during the class. From cumbersome to handsome! 15

20 Using PDF notes Another favourite, recently superseded in terms of convenience in annotation features by the good notes. But to read through large files, the speed and stability is better than the good notes. Moreover, the interface is rather slick- 3 finger tap to turn write on/off, 3 finger swipe back to undo writing. With PDF notes, reading through and commenting on thesis/report is never been easier and greener! 16

21 Using UPAD also an option. 5. What do you do AFTER class? One of the main features of Teaching with ipad is all writings in a class is saved electronically to a file. The lecturer can upload afterclass slide to, for example, Dropbox. Then the lecturer can post the link from Dropbox to Facebook for student to access. With a decent WIFI connection, the process takes only a few minutes. Before the lecturer leaves the classroom, the after-class slide is available to all students. after-class slide is ready A big advantage is that, once students is aware of this feature, they can pay more attention to listening to and thinking about the lecture 17

22 5.1 VDO After classes, students are usually left with lecture notes and example problems to work out by themselves. Screen capture app is another way to relay simple instructions or hints with voice attached to students. Using ScreenChomp Use it like a small whiteboard screen. Once press Record, the screen is captured along with the voice-over. Once press Stop, the recorded session is automatically uploaded to screenchomp.net (as well as saved locally). There are options to save the session to.mp4 or to upload to youtube. 18 ScreenChomp
