1 Exporting a Class List from MarkBook Windows to MarkBook Mac and ios In MarkBook Mac or ios (IPad, iphone and ipod touch), the class list may be entered directly by typing or imported from a file created in MarkBook Windows. Starting with Version 12, MB Win has two distinct exports designed for the MB Mac and ios programs One exports just the class list; One exports the class list, Mark Sets with their entries and attendance. The document, MBWin_Mac_iOS_Data_Exchange.pdf, details this feature. This document covers the use of the file with just the class list used to create a new class or to update an existing one. As well, there is a section describing how to use Dropbox to import student photographs. MarkBook Windows: Exporting the Class List Once a class is open there are three ways to create the file - File menu > Exports > User Defined > click on the Export Class List to Mac/iOS button. - Class menu > Exports > User Defined > click on the Export Class List to Mac/iOS button. - Click on the Class button in the Main Form > click on the Export Class List to Mac/iOS button. When Save dialog box appears, the suggested file name may be edited and the destination path changed. If this file is to be used with MB Mac, the destination may be a USB drive or a Cloud service supported by the Mac. If it s to be used with an ios device, the destination path, at this stage, is temporary but should be easy to locate since the file will be copied to the MarkBook Document folder in itunes or to the web. MarkBook Mac: Importing the Class List If this is a new class (File > New > New Class), it must be setup with a minimum of the Class ID before the class list can be imported. 1. Select the class from the MarkBook Guide 2. Within its menu, click on Settings > Import Students > Local Import 3. Beside Select file to load, click on Open 4. In the dialog box that appears, navigate to file from MB Win. 5. Click on that file; then, click on the Select button. 6. Within the menu for the class, click on Students to view the list. 2 MarkBook ios: Importing the Class List using itunes When the device is attached to a computer running itunes, the File Sharing feature is accessed by clicking on the Device icon; then, on the Apps icon. The File Sharing section is below the list of installed Apps and Home Screens. Click on MarkBook to show its Documents folder To copy a file from the computer to the MarkBook Documents folder, click on Add File ; then, locate the file on the computer. Select the class; then, within its menu, tap on Settings > Import Students. 2. If the text box beneath Update student records from a file is blank or the text is light grey, tap on import students to show a list of the files in the MarkBook Documents folder. Tap on the appropriate file; then, tap on import students again. Otherwise, enter the file name in the text box EXACTLY; then, tap on import students. (This is case sensitive.) 3. Tap on Back > Students to view the class list. MarkBook ios: Importing from a URL If the file is saved to the web and can be accessed using a URL, then to import the file, enter that URL in the text box EXACTLY. The greyed text, is an example of a URL. As a test with a play class, swipe right to left to enable that URL; then, tap on Import Students to download that class list from the site. Open that folder; then, RIGHT click on a photo file any file will do. In the menu that appears, click on Copy Public link. On a Mac, when you RIGHT click on a photo file, the link is labelled Share Dropbox link. 3. Paste the link into Notepad (Windows), TextEdit (Mac) or a word processor so that it s readable. See the example below. (Note that the extension is uppercase JPG. This is important later.) 4. On the ios device, open the class and tap on Settings > Import Students. Enter the Dropbox link EXACTLY as shown (It s case sensitive) BUT WITHOUT THE FILE NAME AT THE END; KEEP THE FINAL SLASH. 5 5. Check to make sure the extension is correct including its CASE. If it isn t, tap on that box and select the correct extension and CASE. Accepted extensions are JPG, jpg, BMP, and bmp. 6. Tap Import photos. If everything is correct, the pinwheel should spin for several seconds followed by a message that reports the number of photos imported. Check the class list to confirm. Other Cloud services may provide this feature. Check their documentation. Mac Photos may be imported in the same way as an ios device using its Settings > Import Students > Remote Import option or they may be imported from a folder on the Mac using the Local Import option. To use the Local option: 1. Copy the JPG or BMP files to a folder on the Mac 2. Open MarkBook and for the class in question, click on Settings > Import Students > Local Import. 3. Make sure the extension matches the one used in the files. 4. Click on Open and navigate to the folder. 5. When you click on Select, a pinwheel will appear followed by a message that reports the number of pictures imported. Check the class list to confirm. MB Mac/iOS - Importing Students Page 5
