3 SECTION 1 Introduction INTRODUCTION 1. What is ibooks Author? 2. The Template Chooser 3. The Lay of the Land Tools Left Panel Main Window What is ibooks Author? ibooks Author is a software program for the Apple Mac platform (not available for a PC). It is used to create and publish interactive books for the ipad and can be viewed using the ibooks app. ibooks can be published and sold, or given away for free, in the itunes store. You can add audio, video, interactive images, review questions, 3D images and more to create an engaging experience for the reader. Not only can these books be viewed on ibooks, but they can also be viewed as a PDF or plain text. However, the pdf and plain text versions will loose all of the interactive capabilities. 2
4 The Template Chooser To get started using ibooks Author you can choose from one of Apples templates. Templates come with pre-defined styles to help with the look and style of your book. First, open ibooks Author by clicking the icon in the doc or by going to the Applications folder. Select a template and click Choose. There are nine Landscape with Portrait templates to choose from. GALLERY 1.1 Landscape with Portrait Templates Click File in the menu and choose New or New from Template Chooser... You will see the following: INTERACTIVE 1.1 Template Chooser Basic Template Thumbnail There are six Portrait Only templates to choose from. GALLERY 1.2 Portrait Only Templates Open Recent Slider Cancel Open an Existing File Choose Classic Text 3
5 The Lay of the Land After you choose a template you will see the following window. INTERACTIVE 1.2 Lorem Ipsum dolor amet, consectetur LEFT PANEL The top left panel is where you can add a cover for your book, an intro media file such as a video, table of contents and a glossary. Cover To add a cover simply click the book icon labeled ibooks Author and drag an image into the main window. If you are using a template you can drag an image and drop it on top of the templates placeholder image to replace it. Left Panel Tool Panel Main Window Media File To add a media file simply click the film strip icon labeled Intro Media and drag a movie file onto the main window. Table of Contents ibooks Author uses the templates styles to automatically create the table of contents for you. To view the styles drawer click View in the main menu and choose Show Styles Drawer. Glossary To add a glossary term click the A-Z icon labeled Glossary. In the main window type in the term and the definition. Drag related terms to the Related Glossary Terms area at the bottom. TOOL PANEL The tool panel contains tools for viewing, formatting, previewing and adding content. More on the tool panel in section 2. MAIN WINDOW The main window is where you will see the pages of your book and add/edit your content such as text, shapes, tables, charts, 4
6 and widgets. Items in the main window can be moved around or deleted from the page. 5
7 SECTION 2 Adding Content Inspector and Media Inspector The inspector is a window that allows you to make adjustments to all aspects of your book. Click the Inspector icon on the top right to bring up the window. Make changes by using the icons along the top. Document Inspector ADDING CONTENT 1. Inspector and Media 2. Adding Chapters, Sections and Pages 3. Adding Text, Shapes, Tables and Charts 4. Adding Widgets Gallery Media Review Keynote Interactive Image 3D Scrolling Sidebar Pop-Over Layout Inspector Wrap Inspector Text Inspector Graphic Inspector Metrics Inspector Table Inspector Chart Inspector Link Inspector Widget Inspector Media The media window shows all of your audio, photos and movies. You can drag any media file from the Media window and onto the page or into a widget. Simply click the Media icon on the upper right to bring the Media window up. The Audio tab will show all your itunes and GarageBand music, Photos will show all of your iphoto and Photo Booth 6
8 images and Movies will show all of your imovie projects as well as any videos in your Movies folder, iphoto, Photo Booth and itunes. Adding Chapters, Sections and Pages Adding chapters, sections and pages in ibooks Author is simple. Using the Add Pages drop down menu at the top left, you can use the drop down menu to choose what you want to add. Simply click to select the chapter or section you want add to in the left panel and make your choice from the Add Pages drop down menu. Section The Section option gives you five choices: Section, Section Text, Copyright, Dedication and Forward. To add one of these do the following: Click the Add Pages icon and hover your mouse over Section to get the fly-out menu. Choose Section, Section Text, Copyright, Dedication or Forward. Pages The Pages option gives you five choices: Default, 1 Column, 2 Column, 3 Column and Blank. To add one of these do the following: Click the Add Pages icon and hover your mouse over Pages to get the fly-out menu. Choose Default, 1 Column, 2 Column, 3 Column or Blank. Chapters The Chapter option gives you two choices: Chapter or Preface. To add one of these do the following: Adding Text, Shapes, Tables and Charts ibooks Author comes with tools that allow you to insert many simple elements into your book. Using the tools at the top you can create Text, Shapes, Tables and Charts. Click the Add Pages icon and hover your mouse over Chapter to get the fly-out menu. Choose Chapter or Preface. 7
9 Text When using a template you can simply select the placeholder text and start typing. You can also add a text box anywhere on the page. To add a text box do the following: Click the Text Box icon located at the top of the window. A text box will appear on the page. Click and drag the text box to where you want it on the page. Use the handles to resize. Click inside the text box to start typing. Shapes ibooks Author provides you with several different shapes. To add a shape do the following: Click the Shapes drop down menu at the top and choose the shape you want to insert. The shape will be inserted into your page. Click and drag to put the shape where you want it. Use the handles to resize. Use the Graphics Inspector to adjust the Fill color and the Stroke. TABLES You may need to include tabular data in your book. To do this you will use the Table icon located at the top. Do the following: Click the Table icon located at the top. A table will appear on the page. Use the Table Inspector to make changes to the table. Charts ibooks Author provides you with several different chart options including 2D and 3D charts. To add a chart do the following: Click the Charts drop down menu at the top and choose the chart you want to insert. The chart will be inserted into your page. Click and drag to put the chart where you want it. Use the Chart Inspector to make changes. Adding Widgets Widgets allow you to add interactive content to your book. Widgets include: Gallery Media Review Keynote % 7% 10% 11% 26% 38% Interactive Image 3D Scrolling Sidebar Pop-Over The content will need to be created ahead of time. Once the content is created, inserting and creating the widget could not be easier. 8
10 Gallery Use the Gallery widget to add a photo slideshow to your book. To insert a Gallery widget, do the following: Click the Widgets drop down menu and choose Gallery. The widget will appear on the page and the inspector window will show the Widget inspector. Click and drag the widget to where you want it on the page. Use the handles to resize it if you want. Click, drag and drop your images into the placeholder from the Photos tab of the Media window or directly from your desktop or a folder. Use the Widget inspector to add captions and titles. Media Use the Media widget to add a video to your book. To insert a Media widget, do the following: Click the Widgets drop down menu and choose Media. The widget will appear on the page and the inspector window will show the Widget inspector. Click and drag the widget to where you want it on the page. Use the handles to resize it if you want. Click, drag and drop your video into the placeholder from the Movies tab of the Media window or directly from your desktop or a folder. Use the Widget inspector to add captions and titles. 11 Review Use the Review widget to add review questions to your book. To insert a Review widget, do the following: Click the Widgets drop down menu and choose Review. The widget will appear on the page and the inspector window will show the Widget inspector. Click and drag the widget to where you want it on the page. Use the handles to resize it if you want. Type your question and answers in the placeholder text. REVIEW 1.1 Review Widget Example Question 1 of 3 ibooks Author only runs on a Mac. Use the Interaction tab on the Widget inspector to add questions. You can add the following type of questions: Multiple Choice Multiple Choice with image on the side Multiple Choice with image on the top Multiple Choice with images in the answer choices A. True B. False Drag Label to target Drag Thumbnail to target Check Answer 10
12 Keynote Use the Keynote widget to add a keynote presentation to your book. To insert a Keynote widget, do the following: Click the Widgets drop down menu and choose Keynote. The widget will appear on the page and the inspector window will show the Widget inspector. Click and drag the widget to where you want it on the page. Use the handles to resize it if you want. Click, drag and drop your keynote file into the placeholder from your desktop or a folder. Type a title and caption in the placeholders and use the Widget inspector to adjust layout and interaction. INTERACTIVE 1.3 Keynote Example Interactive Image Use the Interactive Image widget to add an interactive image to your book. To insert an Interactive Image widget, do the following: Click the Widgets drop down menu and choose Interactive Image. The widget will appear on the page and the inspector window will show the Widget inspector. Click and drag the widget to where you want it on the page. Use the handles to resize it if you want. Click, drag and drop your image into the placeholder from the Photos tab of the Media inspector or your desktop or folder. Click the image in the placeholder. The following Set View window will appear. Use the slider that appears to set your default view of the image and click Set View. Click and drag on a label box and it s pointer to desired area, use the slider to set the view of the image for that label. Click Set View. Click in a label box to type in the info. Click the plus (+) icon to add more labels. Tap to go through the presentation slides. The video on the next page demonstrates how to do this. 11

14 3D Use the 3D widget to add a 3D image to your book. To insert a 3D widget, do the following: Click the Widgets drop down menu and choose 3D. The widget will appear on the page and the inspector window will show the Widget inspector. Click and drag the widget to where you want it on the page. Use the handles to resize it if you want. Click, drag and drop your 3D image file into the placeholder from your desktop or a folder. Type a title and caption in the placeholders and use the Widget inspector to adjust layout and interaction. INTERACTIVE 1.5 3D Image Example Scrolling Sidebar Use the Scrolling Sidebar widget to add a Scrolling Sidebar to your book. To insert a Scrolling Sidebar widget, do the following: Click the Widgets drop down menu and choose Scrolling Sidebar. The widget will appear on the page and the inspector window will show the Widget inspector. Click and drag the widget to where you want it on the page. Use the handles to resize it if you want. Double click the placeholder to add text or copy and paste text into the box. You can also drag images into the sidebar. Type a title and caption in the placeholders and use the Widget inspector to adjust layout and interaction. Scrolling Sidebar Example Originally released in early 2012, Apple s educationthemed ebook creation tool took bold steps as the first WYSIWYG program to export an ebook just as its author envisioned it. As I Use your finger to scroll through the text. Tap and drag to rotate the image. 13
15 Pop-Over Use the Pop-Over widget to add a Pop-Over image to your book. To insert a Pop-Over widget, do the following: Click the Widgets drop down menu and choose Pop-Over. The widget will appear on the page and the inspector window will show the Widget inspector. Click and drag the widget to where you want it on the page. Use the handles to resize it if you want. Pop-Over Example Click, drag and drop your image file into the placeholder from Photos tab of the Media window or your desktop or folder. Double click the image to bring up the pop-over text box. Click in the pop-over text box and type in your content. Type a title and caption in the placeholders and use the Widget inspector to adjust layout and interaction. Tap the image to view the pop-over. 14
16 SECTION 3 Review and Summary Preview and Publish Preview While creating your book, and when your book is finished, you can preview it on the ipad. To preview your book, do the following: Connect your ipad to your computer Open the ibooks app REVIEW AND SUMMARY 1. Preview and Publish 2. Review 3. Summary Click the Preview icon at the top of the ibooks Author window Publish You can have your ibook published to the Apple itunes store for sale or to give away for free. To publish your ibook to the itunes store do the following: Click the Publish icon at the top. Click the Continue button. You will see the following window. Follow the on screen instructions to publish your book. 15
17 Review Now that you ve gone through the ibooks Author book, lets review. Answer the following review questions. Summary Congratulations! You've completed the ibook Author book and review. You have learned how to: Create a new book from a template Add a cover, intro media, TOC and glossary REVIEW 1.2 Answer the following: Question 1 of 5 There are templates available in landscape and portrait views.
