1 Managing Personal Information Center for Innovation in Teaching and Research Presenter: Chad Dennis Instructional Technology Systems Manager The ipad comes stocked with Apple s basic apps for organizing your life. You can keep track of your everyday activities with the Calendar app, Jot down ideas with the Notes app, keep track of all your acquaintances with the Contacts app, remember to get that gallon of milk after work with the Reminders app, and much more. The following is an overview of some of the ipads built-in apps. Copyright 2012 Center for Innovation in Teaching and Research 1

Mail The mail app works with most of the popular email providers including Google Gmail, Microsoft Exchange, Yahoo! Mail, Hotmail, and AOL.

Tap Mail, Contacts, Calendars on the left under Setting. Under Accounts tap Add Account... You will be presenting with options for the type of account to set up. Tap Microsoft Exchange.

2 Mail The mail app works with most of the popular providers including Google Gmail, Microsoft Exchange, Yahoo! Mail, Hotmail, and AOL. It also works with most of the industrystandard IMAP and POP systems. To set up your Zimbra mail do the following: Tap the Settings app to open it. Tap Mail, Contacts, Calendars on the left under Setting. Under Accounts tap Add Account... You will be presenting with options for the type of account to set up. Tap Microsoft Exchange. Fill in the following info: - - your @wiu.edu - Username - Your ECOM user name - Password - Your ECAM password - Description - Zimbra Tap Next. The Server field will appear. Type in zimbra.wiu.edu. Use the four buttons along the top to change your view. Your view options are: Day Week Month List.

3 Next you will choose to bring in your mail, contacts, calendars, and reminders. Tap Save. Calendar Using Calendar app lets you see recent and upcoming events, as well as enter new ones. Tap the calendar icon to open it. Use the four buttons along the top to change your view. Your view options are: Day Week Month List. Use the slider at the bottom to move ahead or back in time. Tap the Today button to bring up the current day. Tap the Calendars button in the upper left corner of the screen to see a list of all calendars currently Copyright 2012 Center for Innovation in Teaching and Research 3

synced with your ipad. You can select one or multiple calendars, or tap Hide All Calendars. Each calendar is color coded, so you can tell what items belong to which calendar.

An Invitations button next to the Calendars button will display any event invitations awaiting response. Adding an Event To add a new event do the following: Tap the plus sign (+) on the lower right. Fill in the title, location, date, and a starting and ending time. Tap the Repeat button to set a recurring event. You can also set up an alert, choose a calendar, availability, and type in some notes. Tap Done in the upper right. Camera The ipad camera app allows you to shoot still images as well as video. The ipad has two cameras built it. A front facing camera and a rear facing camera. To use the camera do the following. Copyright 2012 Center for Innovation in Teaching and Research 4

Tap the Camera icon to open it. Use the toggle on the lower right to choose either the still camera or video camera. Tap the camera switch icon to switch cameras.

Tap the camera icon on the right of the screen to shoot the photo/ video. The picture will automatically save in the photos app.

If you want a portrait-style picture, just hold the ipad upright. If you want a landscape photo, just hold the ipad sideways. Tap the camera icon on the right of the screen to shoot the photo/ video. The picture will automatically save in the photos app. You can tap the thumbnail image on the lower left to view the last photo taken. Notes The notes app is a basic bare bones note taking app. You can create multiple notes, print note and your notes. Tap the notes icon to open it. Use the arrows at the bottom to move from one note to the next. Tap the send icon to the left of the trash can to email or print your note. Tap the trash can icon to delete the note.

6 Use the arrows at the bottom to move from one note to the next. Tap the send icon to the left of the trash can to or print your note. Tap the trash can icon to delete the note. Tap the plus (+) icon in the upper right to create a new note. Safari Safari for the ipad allows you to browse the internet. You have the option of opening up to nine tabs while browsing. Tap the plus button on the upper right to open a new tab Tap the X on the left of a tab to close it Tap and hold plus button to open recently closed tabs Tap and hold Back button to view history Reader Safari also has a very cool Reader function. Whenever you are on a page that Safari considers an article, tap the Reader button in the address bar. This will get rid of all the extra adds and elements on the page except for the article itself.
