2 Create a Movie Open imovie. Select the Projects button from the top menu. Click Create New. Next, Click Movie. You will see a sidebar of libraries and events, browser window with your media, a preview window, and a timeline. A number of themes are available with different styles. To select or change a theme click on Settings at the right top of timeline. Click on box that shows Theme: to preview and select theme. After selecting a theme or no theme click change. Other options are also available. In a theme imovie adds a title over the first and last clip. 2

3 Importing Videos & Photos to imovie Select the Media Button from top menu. Add photos and videos from Photos Library or iphoto to Browser Window. Import button Insert category from pull- down menu 3

4 Import media from ios Devices Connect device to Mac. Click Media button, then Import button. Close Photos, Capture or iphoto windows if they appear. Device in Camera list. In the Import to pop up menu choose where to import or select New Event. Import clips. Import video from File-based or tape-based cameras Connect file-based camera with cable or directly with SD card. Use card reader if no SD slot is available. Follow steps as listed above. From tapebased camcorder a Firewire port or adapter may be needed. Follow instructions from camcorder. Proceed as above to import. Record directly into imovie After choosing where to import movie, select Record Button in sidebar of Import window. Click button again to stop recording. Import media from your Mac Select files or folder and drag selection from the finder to an event in the Libraries list. The clip or clips appear in the event. Connect external drive to computer. Select Device from Import Sidebar. Select clips from list. Choose new event or existing event from Import to pull down menu. 4

Select location of files from Mac, external devices or cameras in Import window sidebar. Next, select individual clips from list generated at that location. Choose existing event or new event in Import to pull down menu. Press space bar to preview. 5

6 Insert Clips in movie Timeline Select clip from Media Browser and drag to Timeline where you have placed the playhead. To place clip at end of Timeline click the plus sign. To select a range in Browser or Timeline hold down R key and drag across the portion you want to select. To trim a clip move yellow bars at beginning and end of clip. If playhead is positioned on top of a clip, the clip in the timeline is split into 2 segments and the new clip is inserted between the 2 segments. To replace clip, drag new clip on top of old clip. Choose from pop-up menu how to replace. Select your project in sidebar under Project Media and see orange lines to show which parts of clips have been placed in Timeline. 6

7 Sort and search for clips in Events When you select an event in the Libraries list, the clips in the library appear in the browser. Sort events in browser by name or date and sort clips by name, date, or duration in View menu. Select an event in the Libraries list. In browser select a range, a clip, or multiple clips. From Mark menu choose favorite, reject, unrate or use keyboard shortcut. Select an event in the Libraries list. In browser click the pop-up menu to the left of the search field and choose All Clips, Hide Rejected: Favorites: or Rejected. 7

8 Play or Skim Video To play video in browser or timeline position pointer over clip where you want to begin playing, press space bar. Or, click play button and pause button to stop. Click \ to play from beginning. To play full screen, position playhead where you want to begin. Next, click double arrow below viewer. Press esc to return to screen. To play clip select clip or part of clip (type x) then choose play selection from View menu. (or / ) To loop select Loop Playback in View menu. Next position pointer on clip and press space bar. In browser the clip plays a loop. In timeline the entire movie plays in a continuous loop. Turn audio on or off while skimming in View menu. 8

9 Transitions between Clips imovie automatically adds transitions to movie when Automatic Content box in Project settings is checked. To manually add transitions content box must be unchecked and No Theme must be selected. To add transitions go to Transition button above the browser window. Skim transition to preview. Gear Settings Click on gear on right edge of browser window to change clip size in Browser, zoom or show waveforms in Audio. Note slider next to Settings menu. Adjust to change clips in timeline. 9

10 Add Titles To add titles to movie click Titles button in top menu. Titles show in browser. Be sure Snapping is turned on in View menu. Place playhead over clip where title is to be placed. Drag title above selected clip. Select title box to adjust length. Select the title box above the clip and a text placeholder appears in the View window. Double click and type in desired text. Important Note: When a theme is chosen imovie automatically places a title above first and last clip. Titles associated with the theme are shown in top row of title choices in browser. These titles can be used on any clip but are not available to be modified. Note 2: To add other titles to clips turn off automatic content in Settings. Select titles from remainder of list and move to clip. Highlight text in View window and make style changes to title. Return to Settings and recheck automatic content box. 10

11 Add animated travel maps and backgrounds Position playhead where you want to add map or background. From the menu above browser select Backgrounds. Double-click to add. In Timeline double-click map to modify. Enter name of beginning and ending of map and tap done after each. Change direction by tapping curved arrow. 11

12 Add Background music and sound clips To add audio, select Audio button in menu bar. Then select either itunes, Sound Effect, or GargageBand in sidebar. Select Background music and drag to music well, located far below the timeline. If trim is turned on in settings the music should automatically trim to match the movie. To add an audio clip from browser, follow procedure as listed above except move the clip just below timeline where it attaches to a clip in the timeline. A line attaches to the clip. Select range of clip in browser before moving to timeline and/or adjust when attached. Control volume by checking Show Wave Forms in settings. Raise or lower horizontal line. Select Background music, then speaker icon in Adjustment menu just above View window to see more choices. Options are to mute sound, change volume, and lower clip volume (ducking). 12

13 To fade audio at beginning or end of audio clip, click on small dot and slide. Adjustment Menu Bar To Choose an Audio Effect to apply to a clip click on Effects button in Adjustment menu bar. Audio Effect window appears. Select effect. To remove effect click on none. Click microphone to add Voice over. 13

14 Video Effects The adjustments listed can be added to clips in the browser window, the timeline or sometimes both. To learn these effects it is suggested that users view imovie tutorial in Noteboom Tutorials or go online to Apple s imovie support at: imovie/mac/10.1/#/ movd17f56aaa 14

15 Create a Trailer Select the Projects button from the top menu. Click Create New. Next, Click Trailer. You will see a sidebar of libraries and events, browser window with your media, a preview window, and a tabbed interface. Select theme (preview first), then fill in Outline and Story Board. Type desired text in Placeholders and add photos and video clips. Don t leave fields blank. Place pointer over clip for controls to appear. Shot List to add, swap or delete clip. 15

16 Share Movie or Trailer Select Projects in top Menu. In File menu select Share or click Share icon. Depending on destination set some or all of the following: Title, Description, Tags, Resolution, Compression, Output quality, YouTube category, Facebook Settings, etc. Click Add to Theater if desired. See information about length and size of movie on Share screen. Follow prompts to share. imovie Theater is designed to work with icloud. With Theater movies can be viewed on computers, ios devices and Apple TV. To share to Theater click in Timeline to share entire movie. Next. Click Theater in Share icon. In imovie Preferences automatic upload to icloud can be set up. Projects not available in icloud show an up pointing arrow in a cloud. Click to upload. 16
