1 Creating Newsletters You will create a one-page newsletter with columns. You will also practice using text wrapping, pull quotes, logos, rotating of graphics and review of the font families. Be creative and produce an attractive design. Reneé Cole 2017

2 Have you noticed most newspapers and magazines are formatted in columns? The text is more interesting when displayed in columns and allows for more text on the page. You will write three SCHOOL APPROPRIATE articles for your newsletter. Open your MISC folder Look at all images that might go together (food, movie, etc.) Decide which FOUR IMAGES to use in your newsletter Watch the VIDEO in the Piner 112 Lab Share folder>resources>videos>desktop Publishing>Publisher 2013 CREATING NEWSLETTERS 2

3 OPEN PUBLISHER 2013 Double click or SELECT the blank document Save as (your initials)newsletter in your DESKTOP Publishing folder 3

4 Go to PAGE DESIGN>MARGINS>NARROW to make use of the majority of your document space Go to PAGE DESIGN>MARGINS>CUSTOM MARGINS to set COLUMNS GRIDS TO 3>OK 4

5 Add a RULER GUIDE to the top of your page by CLICKING IN THE RULER and DRAGGING DOWN Look to the left and make sure it is placed at 2 5

6 INSERT ONE of your IMAGES on the left side of the first column above the 2 guide to create a logo for the nameplate of the newsletter Insert a TEXTBOX ACROSS THE TOP of the two columns above the 2 guide and type your title Fill the area with your title and make necessary formatting choices 6

7 Add a textbox in the right column above the 2 guide and enter the date with TODAY S DATE Change the textbox ALIGNMENT TO THE RIGHT 7

8 Decide which image you will use for the first article TYPE A TITLE for the FIRST ARTICLE by inserting a textbox below the image for the newsletter and the 2 guide and in FIRST THE COLUMNS FONT size 16 INSERT a textbox under the title but ACROSS THE COLUMNS Type a story in your own words for the image using the FONT SIZE OF 9-10 (Minimum of six sentences) Change the columns for the TEXTBOX to 3 COLUMNS 8

9 Insert the image for the article AT THE END Watch the video in the Piner 112 folder>resources>video>publisher 2013 Move, Crop, Resize Make sure your image is aligned to the end of the last paragraph in your article 9

10 TYPE A TITLE for the SECOND ARTICLE by inserting a textbox BELOW the FIRST THE ARTICLE in FONT size 16 INSERT a textbox under the title but ACROSS THE COLUMNS Type a story in your own words for the image using the FONT SIZE OF 9-10 (Minimum of six sentences) Change the columns for the TEXTBOX to 3 COLUMNS INSERT the image in the CENTER of the article using SQUARE text wrap 10

11 TYPE A TITLE for the THIRD ARTICLE by inserting a textbox BELOW the SECOND THE ARTICLE in FONT size 16 INSERT a textbox under the title but ACROSS THE COLUMNS Type a story in your own words for the image using the FONT SIZE OF 9-10 (Minimum of six sentences) Change the columns for the TEXTBOX to 3 COLUMNS INSERT the image in the BEGINNING of the article 11

12 Click on the first article in the middle of the second column Insert a PULL QUOTE by clicking INSERT>PAGE PARTS>PULL QUOTES>CLICK A DESIGN Resize to fit the width of the column REPLACE the TEXT of the pull quote WITH A SENTENCE ABOUT THE STORY 12

13 INSERT A LOGO by going to INSERT>BUILDING BLOCKS ARROW IN RIGHT CORNER>LOGOS CHOOSE A LOGO>INSERT 13

14 Move the LOGO BOTTOM RIGHT CORNER OF THE NEWSLETTER REPLACE the word ORGANIZATION with THE NAME OF YOUR NEWSLETTER SELECT THE LOGO RIGHT CLICK>UNGROUP Deselect the logo by clicking somewhere else in your document 14

15 SELECT ONLY THE PYRAMID CLICK FORMAT at the top>change PICTURE>CHANGE PICTURE to open the clip art files SEARCH for a PEN, SELECT ONE AND INSERT RESIZE the PEN to fit just larger than the logo 15

16 RIGHT CLICK>FORMAT PICTURE>PICTURE TAB>TRANSPARENCY SLIDE THE BAR TO A HIGHER PERCENAGE>OK SELECT the PEN Go to DRAWING TOOLS>SEND BACKWARD 16

17 INSERT A TEXTBOX with the words JOKE OF THE MONTH Underneath, the title Joke of the Month, TYPE a joke or riddle in the textbox that has to do with your subject (You may make it up, or search for one on the Internet) INSERT another TEXTBOX below the joke/riddle for the punch line or answer ROTATE the ANSWER TEXTBOX to turn it upside down by GRABBING THE TOP CIRCLE AND TURNING IT AROUND 17

18 CHANGE the COLOR SCHEME of your newsletter Add DIVIDING LINES between the articles SELECT the NEWSLETTER HEADLINE CHANGE the FONT to a DECORATIVE FONT SELECT the LEAD STORY HEADLINE CHANGE the FONT to a SERIF FONT SELECT the SECONDARY HEADLINE CHANGE the FONT to a SANS SERIF FONT 18

19 BOLD the DATE, VOLUME, AND ISSUE FILL the JOKE OF THE MONTH TEXTBOX with a color Spellcheck PRINT PREVIEW (Can you see everything? Is anything off the page?) SAVE Upload your Newsletter to your Google Drive and share Complete rubric and turn in (see next page for example of newsletter and rubric) 19
