1 Zimbra: RS Fowler Student Portal Zimbra is the secure provider/host for RS Fowler students. Students may their teachers and other RSF students within the school community. Students may access their s from their portable devices, home computers and other internet compatible devices. Students may not receive or send s outside the RSF school network. This means that while students can send s from their grandma s house, they cannot sent or receive s from their grandma. This is the Zimbra address; It is a secure site which means that, when at school, students will be able to access their when using school laptops, workstations and their own 3G. As of December 1, 2013, students trying to access Zimbra using their own device but using the school wifi will have difficulty due to the firewall (Squidblock). I anticipate that the wifi restrictions will be significantly lowered by early January 2014 which will allow unlimited student access. This is what the Zimbra login page looks like: Students use their computer lab username and password to log into Zimbra. The students know their username and password but I have attached the file for your use. Please keep this in a secure location (not as a copy on your desk) as if it lands in the hands of students, they can easily make a copy and log in as other people, etc.

The sent folder will list all items the student has created and which they have not put in the trash. Drafts are unsent s that have been created by the student. Junk is spam. There shouldn t be anything there as students can t receive spam. Trash is where they can delete any s they no longer need. Students can create a new message by clicking on New Message.

3 This is what the screen looks like if you are creating a new message. In order to send another student an , they must know their address. A student s address is their login@s.gsacrd.ab.ca. If Ms. Coates had a login it would be coate99@s.gsacrd.ab.ca. Just a reminder. Students need to keep their passwords a secret. They are responsible for any s sent out from their account. If a student receives an inappropriate from another person, they should be sure not to delete it and show it to a staff member or a parent. If a student wanted to a teacher, they could do so in a number of ways. They could simply start typing their address, ie scoates@gsacrd.ab.ca. They Zimbra

4 student portal has been set up with address prediction which means that as the student begins typing a staff name, the computer will predict the address they want. Another way to choose a teacher is using the address book. This is what the address book looks like.

5 The student can then choose from the list. The list on this attachment is not up to date. A current staff list has been sent to LTS. If the student clicks on the staff name they need, a new will be automatically created for them.

6 Zimbra has a calendar to help students stay organized.

7 It also has a brief case where students can save sent and received s in different files (similar to First Class). They could have a folder, for example to store different assignments from each class. I have created a Language Arts folder for this student.

8 Students can save a draft of an . Our drafts in First Class save (almost) automatically.

9 Students can, and should, check their spelling before sending their s. If students are ing work to themselves so that they can work from home, they would be wise to use the html option in Options. Students can send attachments. Finally, always be sure to log out. The sign out drop down menu is under the student name on the top, right hand side of the screen.
