1 HBU Self Service Password Reset Houston Baptist University implemented self-service password reset in July 2014 to give end users/students a way to manage their own password resetting without relying upon traditional methods to get back into their account. A critical piece of this process is the enrollment into the system so that when you do need it you have a method. In order to prevent others from resetting your password and fraudulently gaining access to your account there must be a method to authenticate your true identity. For this purpose HBU has chosen to allow the following methods: The use of questions answered by the end user and then randomly asking the user during the reset process to provide the correct answers. The use of an alternate address to which a reset code is sent so that only the person accessing that account can get it. Note that this is not your HBU.edu account since if you forgot your password you won t have access to that account. The use of Google Authenticator on a smartphone. By loading the Google app from the app store onto your iphone, Android or Blackberry phone you can authenticate using that device if you have pre-registered it. In addition you can also use the Self Service Password reset to do simple password resets provided you do remember the password and just want to change it because you think it may have been compromised. Remember that your password provides the security to your identity at HBU so protect it! You can access the portal via the following URL in any web browser: With your smart phone the QR code to the right will also take you there without having to type it in. This system avoids having to wait in queue when calling the help desk to reset your password and is available to you 24 hours a day.

2 When you log in you will see the following screen: So three options are available to you on the login screen; 1. You know your password and just want to reset it or you need to enroll in which case you fill in the username and password and log in by clicking on the login button. 2. You forgot your password and need to reset it; Click on the Reset option. This will require you to have previously enrolled. 3. Unlock your account; the option to unlock a locked account. Usually this is done because you ve failed out your login attempts by mistyping too many times or forgot to change your password on your mobile device and it timed you out before you remembered to change the password on the mobile device also.

3 Upon successful login you will see the following: On the change password tab you enter your old password and then the new one with a confirmation to do a simple change. Reminders are giving about password parameters on the screen. Complexity refers to having at least one character from three of the five groups of characters: Uppercase characters of European languages (A through Z, with diacritic marks, Greek and Cyrillic characters) Lowercase characters of European languages (a through z, sharp-s, with diacritic marks, Greek and Cyrillic characters) Base 10 digits (0 through 9) Nonalphanumeric characters: ~!@#$%^&*_-+=` \(){}[]:;"'<>,.?/ Any Unicode character that is categorized as an alphabetic character but is not uppercase or lowercase. This includes Unicode characters from Asian languages. If you haven t enrolled the system will remind you with this notice:

4 Enrollment Select the Enrollment tab. Enrollment can be done in three ways. The first tab is for security questions. The system will ask you to select a question and then below that provide your answer and a confirmation of your answer. The confirmation is to ensure that you can type the answer twice the same way and don t accidentally misspell it. There is a check box you can uncheck at the bottom of the screen so that you can see your answers as you type them recommended only if you are sure you are in private and no one or any camera is looking over your shoulder at your screen. Click Enroll when you are finished with the questions. The second tab is for a verification code. Here you provide your alternate address. This address must be a non-hbu address that you can receive in. The reason is that if you forget your password then you will have no way to get into your HBU to retrieve it. You can click the + sign and enter more than one alternate address. Click Enroll at the bottom when you have finished entering addresses.

5 The third tab is for the Google authenticator. Here you must have the Google authenticator app on your smart phone (iphone, ipad, Android, Blackberry). There is a link conveniently provided to allow you to load the app if you do not have it. Once you have the app installed it links to the camera on your smartphone and you can scan the QR code displayed and it will give you a number that you key into the screen. Then click on the Enroll button to complete the enrollment for this tab. Reset Password If you click on the Reset Password link instead of logging in the assumption is that you don t remember your password and need a bit of help. Here is where that few minutes spent enrolling earlier pays off.

6 If you forgot your username then contact the help desk at Otherwise just key in your username in the top box and the random code in the bottom box and click the continue button. {The random code is called a CAPTCHA code and is to prevent Internet automated programs from trying to break into your account.} If you can t read the random code click on the button to the right to generate a different random code. Once you complete the screen the continue button will take you to the next screen where you will need to make a decision as to which method you wish to use to authenticate yourself to the system: The first option will be populated or can be pulled down to select your alternate address(s). By selecting this button and clicking continue an will be sent to your account. Then you simply read off the and enter the code on the next screen. Notice there is a timer in the upper right, so you will have to complete this screen in the time allotted or you will need to start the process over.

7 The second option will ask you the series of questions that you filled out during enrollment to ensure you are who you say you are. Click the Continue button when you finish answering. The last option is to use the Google authenticator on your Smartphone to provide a code which you then key into the screen to complete the authentication step. After completing any one of the three methods you will then be presented with a screen to change your password to something new: Unlock Account If you click on the Unlock Your Account link instead of logging in the assumption is that your account is locked out. The most common reason is you have misspelled your password several times in a row and caused it to lock, a frequent occurrence when you first change your password much akin to using the wrong year for the first few days of January. When you arrive at this screen key in your account then

8 tab down to the field where the CAPTCHA random code is and key that. The next screen will ask you to select which method to reset and is again dependent upon your preenrolling in the system. A timer is provided in the upper right. Don t worry if you can t get to it right way, you can always start over from the beginning. The options for unlocking are the same as for forgetting a password with regards to verification. The first option is to send an to your alternate account, the second option in the picture above is to use your security questions and the third is to use Google Authenticator. Once you have passed the authentication step your next screen will look like this:

9 By clicking on the Unlock Account button the system will attempt to unlock a locked account. If you try this on an account that is not locked to begin with you will see this warning screen: If your account is truly locked and you are successful you will get the following message: Summary Once you have completed your enrollment you are ready for that eventuality of the day you forget your password. You can then use a QR sticker around campus to lead you to the web page or key in the URL:
