1 September 201 Government of India Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation Central Statistics Office Social Statistics Division

2 PREFACE India has achieved considerable progress in socio-economic development over the years. It is the need of the Government to measure such changes through the compilation of comparable statistical indicators. Recognizing this need, the Central Statistics Office (CSO), Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation is bringing out a publication entitled Selected Socio-Economic Indicators for India. Since the publication was found to be quite useful by different types of users, CSO started bringing it out as a regular publication with revised nomenclature namely Selected Socio-Economic Statistics, India with effect from 1993 on quinquennial basis. This publication is the latest issue of the series covering a wide range of subjects. India has a very long tradition of collection of socio-economic statistics through the Population Census, National Sample Surveys and as a by-product of Administrative Statistics. Socio-Economic statistics play an integral role in achieving sustainable development objectives. The need for improvements in the field of data and statistics to monitor progress on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the associated need for statistical capacity building in developing countries have been highly recognized. As the country is committed to the Post 2015 Global Development Agenda, that is achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), this publication could be an important source of information to the indicators related to some of the SDGs set. This publication provides a comprehensive picture of the socio-economic situation of the country enabling informed decision making. In view of the growing concern for social well-being and improving the quality of life, different types of social statistics and indicators of social development are in general demand. In tune with the changing requirements, the coverage and presentation of this publication have been significantly improved in the current issue. The data given in this publication is based on the information available in various government publications by the Union Government Ministries/ Departments/ Organizations and their published records/ websites. I express my deep gratitude to all the data sources which contributed the valuable data/ information and supported our efforts to bring out the publication. I would like to extend my sincere thanks to Social Statistics Division and all those who have contributed directly and indirectly in bringing out this Publication in its present form. I hope the compendium will benefit all those who are involved in the field of policy, planning, management, administration, and research in the areas related to environment. Comments/ suggestions for further improvement of the publication would be welcomed and will be highly appreciated. New Delhi September 201 (Dr. Davendra Verma) Director General (Social Statistics)
