1 15 TH BIENNIAL MOGOLLON ARCHAEOLOGY CONFERENCE OCTOBER 2 THROUGH OCTOBER 4, 2008 REGISTRATION INFORMATION Western New Mexico University Museum will host the 14 th Mogollon Archaeology Conference October 2 through October 4 in Silver City, New Mexico on the campus of Western New Mexico University. HOW TO GET TO SILVER CITY: In order to get to Silver City you have to want to come here, and we hope you do! Driving: Directions can be obtained by going to Who knows what the gas prices will be come October, but be prepared to pay 20 to 30 cents more per gallon for gas in Silver City at all of the stations (exceptions after hours 3 to 4 cents off per gallon at the Phillips 66 on Pinos Altos Rd/NM 15 just off US 180 or the Mirastar in the Wal-Mart parking lot, 3 cents off with gas/gift card purchased in the Walmart. If you drive through Lordsburg, Las Cruces, or Deming plan on filling up! Before leaving you can go to and search for the best gas prices/locations along your route. El Paso International Airport: one shuttle service is available to Silver City. Las Cruces Shuttle Service can be contacted at or We recommend that you call the shuttle service for their schedule prior to making any flight arrangements. Note: they require 24-hour advance registrations. Transportation to the Besse Merle Forward Global Resource Center (GRC) or the WNMU Museum from the host hotel (Holiday Inn Express) will not be provided (see for service and fares, there is no bus stop of HIE but there is demand service). Albuquerque International Airport (Albuquerque Sunport): Plane service to Silver City from Albuquerque is currently provided by Great Lakes Airlines (note: while airport service to/from Silver City/Grant County is subsidized by the US Government the rising cost of jet fuel may affect air service). Please call them at or for information and reservations. Public transportation to and from the Grant County Airport is available with advance reservations (see or call for more information). Tucson International Airport: will have to arrange their own transportation to Silver City (see more information from Lordsburg to Silver City). In-town Transportation: Silver City does have limited public transportation in the form of Corre Caminos Transit Silver City also has the following Automobile Rental Services available: Enterprise Rent-a-Car or ; and Taylor Car Rental REGISTRATION: The draft conference schedule, registration, fees, and additional information will be available by mid-summer 2008 at and sent via . The registration fee for the conference is $50.00 if you pre-register prior to September 5, We encourage you to pre-register and to indicate the various activities in which you wish to participate by using the enclosed registration form. Your Mogollon Archaeology Conference packets can be picked up at the Opening Reception/Registration on Thursday, October 2, 2008, between 4 pm and 6 pm. Late registration (after September 5) or on-site registrations add $10.00.

2 You may also register during the opening reception on Thursday, October 2, or at the Global Resource Center (GRC) on Friday, October 3 between 7:30 and 10:00 A.M. You must pre-register for the Friday evening dinner at the Buckhorn to obtain the dinner entrée you require. A few tickets for the dinner will be reserved on a first come first served basis for late registrants, but a specific entrée cannot be guaranteed. CONFERENCE HOTEL: The conference hotel and co-sponsor of the 15 th Biennial Mogollon Archaeology Conference is the Holiday Inn Express. Conference rate for single or double rooms is $79.95 plus tax per night, which includes a continental breakfast. Reservations must be made by September 18, 2008 through the Central Reservations Line at HOLIDAY, or directly with the hotel at (575) When making reservations please identify yourself as part of the Mogollon Archaeology Conference in order to receive the group discounted rate. Employees of state or federal agencies are eligible for the Government Rate in effect at the time of the reservation. Access the website in order to view details about the hotel, including driving directions. The Holiday Inn Express offers free wifi/internet access for its guests. PAPERS: Those individuals interested in presenting papers are requested to submit a title and an abstract by Friday, August 29, Please submit your name, address, contact information, institutional affiliation, paper title, author(s), and an abstract not to exceed 100-words to the Conference Program Chair/Organizer (BettisonC@wnmu.edu) via (please see Paper Title/Abstract Information document). ALL papers will be limited to 15-minutes in length. Papers or presentations are limited to Mogollon archaeology (including Jornada Mogollon and Northern Chihuahua) with a cut-off date of A.D Due to time limitations, papers concerned with Historic and Archaic groups are discouraged unless the paper pertains directly to the evolution of Mogollon groups. Abstracts will be reviewed by a Conference Program Committee. All four mini-symposia have been accepted by the Conference Program Committee. There are approximately 24 slots for independent papers. Papers on current research in the Mogollon area will be presented, Friday, October 3 and Saturday, October 4, from 8:00 am to 4:30 pm. Paper presentations will be held in the state of the art Besse Forward Global Resource Center (GRC) auditorium on the WNMU campus. An LCD projector is integrated into the GRC technology and will be available; however, the University does not maintain and cannot guarantee that standard slide projects or overhead projectors will be available. In order to facilitate easy transition between presenters using PowerPoint and to lessen delays to the schedule caused by uploading presentations individually, all PowerPoint presentations must be sent as an attachment to bettisonc@wnmu.edu no later than 4:30 pm MST, Tuesday, September 30. Please use the first initial and the last name of the presenter for a file name, for example cbettisonpaper and save files in Microsoft version 2003 only (Microsoft version 2007 or Microsoft Vista files cannot be read by our systems). Please realize due to time and staffing constraints we will be unable to process last minute requests to upload or connect computers during the conference. Also, large files may need to be sent on a CD via snail mail (Microsoft version 2003 only) and must be received no later than 4:30 p.m. MST, Tuesday, September 30. To reduce file size it is suggested that embedded jpegs be no larger than 72dpi acceptable for web publication and PowerPoint viewing. When ing, please do not zip, cache, or archive your presentation or provide it in any form other than Microsoft version 2003 PowerPoint! If you are using non-u.s. systems (such as Canadian, European or Mexican systems) please be aware that there may/will be difficulty in loading and accessing your presentation since there can be slight, but important, differences in Windows products from country to country. Microsoft version 2007 PowerPoint or Microsoft Vista PowerPoint cannot be read on our systems.

PARKING: Parking for the Global Resource Center is available on 12 th Street in a new parking lot directly across from Martinez/Phelps Dodge Hall and in the Fine Arts Center Theatre lot, located to the west of the building on F Street. Please pick up a visitor s parking pass at the registration table if you plan to use on-campus parking. SPECIAL EVENTS: Reception/Registration: Conference registrants are invited to an opening reception at Western New Mexico University Museum on Thursday, October 2 from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Registration materials will be available for pickup at that time. Please mark the number in your party who will attend. Friday Night Dinner Social!!! A dinner social, intended to be an opportunity for informal discussion among attendees, is planned for Friday, October 3 at the Buckhorn Saloon & Opera House in nearby Pinos Altos. Roundtrip bus transportation between the conference hotel and the Buckhorn is included in the dinner cost. A no-host cash bar starts at 6:00 p.m. in the Opera House. Dinner will begin at 6:30 p.m. and the cash bar will remain open throughout dinner. There are two entrée options, a New York strip steak or salmon, and dinner includes salad, entrée, baked potato, homemade fresh bread, dessert, and choice of ice tea, coffee, or water, tax and tip. Including roundtrip transportation between the conference hotel and the Buckhorn the cost of the dinner social is $36.00 per person. To ensure the desired entrée please check your choice on the registration form and register early! Dinner tickets are limited!! Buses (Corre Cantinas/Caminos) will begin to shuttle folks to the Buckhorn Saloon & Opera House at 6:00 p.m. from the Holiday Inn Express parking lot. More information will be available at registration. Daily Conference Breaks: The majority of your registration fee will be used to provide great food and plenty of coffee at morning and afternoon breaks.
