2 Overview Over the past year as MPV has gained momentum, the concept of a PlugFest has been discussed to highlight the current state of compatibility when exchanging digital content between digital imaging and consumer electronics products. OSTA has successfully conducted UDF PlugFest and CD-R and DVD Compatibility studies. The MPV Committee would like to add a Camera/Photo PlugFest event to the OSS (Optical Storage Symposium) activities. The MPV committee believes that this event will provide the best leverage to gain additional adoption of MPV as the standard for enhancing digital content recognition, navigation, and user enjoyment. More specifically, the committee can leverage the summary report of the Camera/Photo PlugFest to show an actual need for improved compatibility as well as MPV being the best solution to address compatibility. WHAT: Camera/Photo PlugFest for Compatibility Testing compatibility and user experience in exchanging Photo content between: - PC Photo software applications - Digital Cameras and Cell Phone Cameras - Personal Media Players - DVD Players and Recorders WHY: Getting beyond the PC market It has long been debated how to grow the digital imaging market. One basic solution is to decouple the digital camera and related photo peripherals from the PC. Whether this is the ultimate bottle neck for digital cameras or not, the growth of PC-less photo applications is here: Such products as Photo Printers, DVD Players, Portable A/V players, Portable CD/DVD burners and others are starting to implement PC-less handling of digital photos. As most of us know, the key for success in such PC-less word is COMPATIBILITY. In this initial session of compatibility we will study compatibility of photo files with their related metadata along with slideshows (presentations) and collections (photo albums). It is our intention to compile an OSTA report that highlights: - Both successful compatibility and lack there off - Comparison of PC and PC-less environment - Comparison of MPV enabled solutions WHERE: Optical Storage Symposium (OSS 04), Fairmont Hotel, San Francisco OSTA will provide a room for this event WHEN: 4:00pm - 9:30pm Sunday, October 17 th 8:00am -11:30am Monday, October 18 th AGENDA: Sunday afternoon and evening Setup and initial testing, o Presentation (30 minutes) by the MPV Committee Set expectations for PlugFest activities and objectives Review MPV, MPV Profiles, Working Groups Validation Test Tools, Logo Licensing o Actual testing of compatibility and interoperability o Technical support for implementing MPV Monday morning Final run of all scenarios

3 o o o Summary of results Recommendation for OSTA report Closing presentation and adjourn OBJECTIVES: In discussing this proposal, the objectives in addition to MPV adoption include: - Leveraging OSS attendance and timing, but not scheduling a PlugFest during the OSS/CEA sessions - Creating additional sponsorship opportunities - Provide another event to drive additional attendance at OSS - Generate a state of the industry compatibility report which would promote MPV and membership. CAMERA/PHOTO PLUGFEST SPONSORSHIP: Parker will work on the details of sponsorship, but the goal is to provide additional opportunities to companies who would gain value from sponsorship of the PlugFest. OSTA would have to commit to cover the cost of the room Sunday night and Monday morning, as well as a social hour. It is the MPV committee s goal to cover the cost of this activity through offering additional sponsorships for the Camera/Photo PlugFest. A tentative proposal would include: $3,000 PlugFest Sponsor: Sponsorship recognition and banner visibility at the PlugFest $6,500 Sponsor Plus: Sponsorship recognition at the PlugFest and a MarketPlace booth for access to the CEA and OSS participants. $10,000 Flagship Camera/Photo PlugFest Sponsor: Recognition and banner visibility at PlugFest, MarketPlace booth, speaking time at Sunday event, recognition at all Camera/Photo PlugFest sessions. $15,000 All above benefits plus featured sponsorship of the OSS Closing Reception. It is the responsibility of the MPV Committee to manage the Camera/Photo PlugFest and actively work to get Camera/Photo PlugFest participants. The MPV Committee will work with the OSS Organizing Committee to provide marketing ideas and company prospects for attendance and sponsorship. The sponsorship opportunities would be promoted to the MPV Committee companies, and the administration would be managed by James Goldman and Debbie Maguire. 4 Proposed PlugFest Activity Overview The focus of the PlugFest is centered around Digital Camera interoperability. Thus, we will be talking a look at content generated from digital cameras and consumed in variety of PC and CE devices. Since the content of interest is generated in digital cameras first our scope will include transfer of content from digital cameras to PC application and CE players and storage devices. We will also expand the scope to include the exchange of such content between non-camera devices. Our intent is to explore and report the results of content exchange in the above described Digital Camera Ecosystem. Digital Camera Ecosystem Details In order to focus our efforts we shall limit choices of interface between devices. The primary interface of exchange shall be USB. In addition, memory cards and other removable storage will be used to exchange content. Optionally, we may expand the choice to Bluetooth and/or IrDA if significant interest emerges. The desired products of interest will be in the following groupings: Cameras: USB Digital Cameras USB and Bluetooth/IrDA Camera Phones and Smart Phones Note: Connectivity will include usage of removable memory cards. PC Software: Consumer imaging software packages capable of communicating with digital cameras via USB Camera Phone software Portable Player/Storage: Portable Devices capable of communicating with PCs, Cameras and other CE devices for the purpose of downloading and/or uploading image and other data. These devices may include storage, playback and recording of images to other media. Home Consumer Devices: CD/DVD Players/Recorders and other non-pc devices capable of communication with Cameras and possibly PC and other CE devices for the purpose of downloading and/or uploading images and other data. These devices may include storage, playback and recording of images to other media. Objectives of PlugFest Testing - Recognition of devices upon connection - Transfer of picture image files 1. Ability to recognize multiple image file types 2. Ability to synchronize content between two devices

5 3. Ability to recognize and transfer non-image media content (audio, video) - Ability to transfer and utilize image metadata content 1. Identify method of metadata recognition, ex. MPV 2. Image Thumbnail utilization 3. Identify a common list of metadata type implemented 4. Identify usage of metadata by consumer - Ability to transfer and utilize slideshows (presentations) - Ability to transfer and utilize image libraries (collections) - MPV Reader and Writer compliance testing (MPV capable devices only) Method of PlugFest Testing Each participating company shall facilitate one or more publicly released or prototype level devices capable to some degree of the above stated objectives. Participating company will also facilitate a support individual able to setup applicable devices and willing to provide pertinent information on device behavior. At the end of the event a short summary will be request detailing tasks accomplished and their results. In addition and recommendations or suggestions to OSTA and MPV committee is welcomed.
