1 What is the Federated Search Module? Federated Search Module Overview Last updated 3 March 2014 The Federated Search Module has been written by Softlink to be fully-integrated with v5 it allows multiple data sources including a local catalogue to be searched in real time, direct from v5 s public Search interface, without having to link to a different product interface. What s the difference between the Federated Search Module and Softlink s previous Federated Search offerings? The Federated Search Module is Softlink s own implementation of a federated search engine, using database connectors written by Softlink. Our previous offerings have relied on integration with federated searching solutions provided by third-party vendors, often making use of the Web Services API Federated Search module. The new Federated Search Module is completely separate to the previous offerings. Proposed nomenclature: This will be referred to as the Oliver or Liberty Federated Search Module. Terminology: Connector a piece of software that provides a generic mechanism for connecting with one or more Search Sources e.g. EBSCOhost connector, Z39.50 connector, OpenSearch connector, etc. Search Source an individual data source or repository that can be queried by the federated search engine. This might be an individual database e.g. EBSCO s Science Reference Centre, an individual library, or other source such as Google. Private Connector a Connector that has been custom developed for a client and is available only to that client. Private Search Source a Search Source that is connected to via a Private Connector. Initial Search Sources and Connectors: The following is a list of the 630+ Search Sources and their Connectors that will be initially available and supported in the v5 Build release. Additional sources may be available if time allows. See FAQ on creating new sources using existing connectors. Not included in Search Source limit see FAQ below Pricing: Federated Search will be a new registration module with an annual service subscription cost. The annual price will be $AU450 for Oliver and $AU950 for Liberty. FAQS: What is included with purchase of the Federated Search Module? Clients will receive access to the module and be able to use up to 10 Search Sources (databases) in their system. Softlink data sources and sources using the Z39.50 sources Connector will be freely available and not included in this limit. (Note that some database Connectors currently use Z39.50 e.g. Gale Cengage, but are still included in the Search Source limit, as we reserve the right to change the connection protocol.) Does a client need to have a subscription in order to search a source? Yes, the client will need to have a current subscription for a source that requires one e.g. a database. Will clients be able to use more than 10 Search Sources? Clients will be able to activate additional Search Sources by purchasing bundles of additional Search Sources. This will be an additional annual service subscription per bundle of 5. The annual pricing per bundle will be AU$250 for Oliver and $AU525 for Liberty.

3 Will clients be able to set up Federated Search themselves? Yes, once a client has the appropriate module in their system registration, they ll be able to start using Federated Search with the bundled Search Sources out of the box. Will Professional Services be required for clients who buy Federated Search? Clients who use the packaged Search Sources should be able to do so without any assistance. Some training or Professional Service assistance (0.5 day) is recommended if clients intend to configure their own Search Sources using the existing Connectors. What help will be available to clients on Federated Search? There will be a Help Guide available in the Integrated Help on the use of Federated Search. Support will also be able to assist with queries or forward them through to Development in the usual manner. How are additional paid Search Sources activated? Clients who have paid for additional Search Sources will be provided with an updated registration, as with other paid modules. Clients will then be able to activate an additional number of Search Sources up to their limit, simply by enabling them in the product interface. A client may change their mind as to which paid sources they have activated, simply by disabling one before they enable another. How are client requests for new Search Sources handled? Requests for new Search Sources should come through to Development via FogBugz in the usual manner. If the Search Source can be connected to with an existing Connector, Development will provide the necessary details to add and configure the Search Source via the product interface. In addition, new Search Sources deemed by Softlink to be of general value will be pushed out to all Federated Search users in the subsequent automatic update (see the question on updating below for details). If the Search Source requires that a new Connector be written, this will be communicated back to the client who may then opt to request a new Connector. How are client requests for new Connectors handled? Connector requests are submitted to Development in the same way as any other piece of work. Requests may be either for a Private Connector, for that client only, or a regular Connector, which will be added to the pool of Connectors available to all clients. Clients wishing to pay may request a quote, which will be a standard quote from the Development team. Clients not wanting to pay for a regular Connector will have their request recorded in FogBugz in the usual way, for consideration in a future release. Requests for Private Connectors will only be considered as quotes. How much can a client expect to pay for a new Connector? The flat fee for new Connectors will be $AU2,500. Private Connectors will require the client to pay a yearly support and maintenance fee of $AU500 for each Private Connector that Softlink is maintaining for them. Can clients write their own Connectors? This is not something we will be supporting in the immediate future, however it is technically possible. How will Connectors be updated? A mechanism for auto-updating Connectors in client systems will be made available which will function in much the same way as the system auto-update, but will be a separate process and independent from the system auto-update. All clients with the Federated Search Module registration module will be able to see the complete list of generally available Connectors (both free and paid) and have these updated by the auto-updater.

4 How will Search Sources be updated? The mechanism for updating Connectors will also update Search Sources. How will Private Connectors be updated? If a client has a Private Connector, it will not be made available to other client systems. Updates to paid Private Connectors will be made available when changes have been made. Private Connectors will be maintained as part of the annual support and maintenance fee per Private Connector. How will Private Search Sources be updated?
