1 How to embed (insert) videos into Blackboard Note: While there are many possible ways to get video content into Blackboard, there are only two options that you should use. These take advantage of CSCC s cloud video platform, called Kaltura. Preparing your Blackboard course to use Kaltura videos 1. Once you ve logged into Blackboard and gone into your course where you want to use video, under the Control Panel on the left-side navigation, click on Customization, then click on Tool Availability from the drop-down menu. 2. You have to scroll about halfway down the Tool Availability list to find the three options you need to make sure are checked. There should be a checkbox for Kaltura Mashup and then two separate checkboxes for Kaltura Media. Make sure all three boxes are checked, and if they aren t, click inside each checkbox to enable it. 3. Scroll to the bottom of the Tool Availability webpage, then click the blue Submit button. 4. Repeat steps 1 3 in each Blackboard course where you want to use video. Option 1: Inserting a standalone video player 1. Make sure the video you want to use is already in the My Media area of Blackboard. Note that all Relay videos automatically go into My Media. If your video isn t there, or if you re unsure, refer to the How to put (upload) videos into Blackboard document available from DEIS. 2 2. In your Blackboard course, go to any content area page where the blue Build Content button is available at the top. Hover over that button to show the pop-up menu, then under Mashups, click on Kaltura Media (in the bottom-right corner). 3. Your Kaltura Mashup Gallery should appear in a new webpage. Your videos should show up with thumbnail preview images in reverse chronological order with the most recently made/uploaded videos at the top including their titles, creation times, and durations (in hours : minutes : seconds). Find the video you want to embed in your course, then click on the blue Select button to the far right of that video listing. 4. You should be returned to the Create Mashup Item page, where your Kaltura video should be shown with a thumbnail image. Type in a Title in the required text field; this is the text that will appear above the video player on the Blackboard content page. If desired, scroll down the webpage to the Options area to select typical Blackboard content item options. 3 5. Your video should now appear on the Blackboard content page (at the bottom) with a movie clapboard icon, the Title text, and a video thumbnail image. Click on the gray Watch Media button below the thumbnail to launch the floating Kaltura video player and view your video. You can use any video unlimited times in unlimited courses with course copies intact. Enjoy! Option 2: Inserting a video player using the Visual Text Box Editor (VTBE) Note: This option allows you to place a Kaltura video player anywhere that the VTBE is accessible, including announcements, assignments, test questions, and feedback. 1. Make sure the video you want to use is already in the My Media area of Blackboard. Note that all Relay videos automatically go into My Media. If your video isn t there, or if you re unsure, refer to the How to put (upload) videos into Blackboard document available from DEIS. 2. Create a content item that provides access to the VTBE. In this example, it s an announcement. On the Create Announcement webpage, if the VTBE toolbar looks like this click the down-pointing double arrow on the far right to show more of the toolbar. 3. Type in a Subject for the announcement, then type in any text or place in any other information for the announcement BEFORE you insert the Kaltura video in the VTBE. Be sure to press the Return/Enter key on your keyboard after the last of the text/information, so that the blinking cursor is on its own separate line in the VTBE. 4 4. In the third row of the toolbar, click on the Mashups button, then click on Kaltura Media. 5. A new Media Gallery web browser window should pop up. Your videos should show up with thumbnail preview images in reverse chronological order with the most recently made/uploaded videos at the top including their titles, creation times, and durations (in hours : minutes : seconds). Find the video you want to embed in your course, then click on the blue Select button to the far right of that video listing. 6. In this example, you should be returned to the Create Announcement page, and your Kaltura video should be shown with a thumbnail image in the VTBE. If desired, scroll down the webpage to the Options area to select typical Blackboard content item options. Or if you don t want any options, just click on the blue Submit button in the upper-right corner. 7. Your video should now appear on the Blackboard content page as part of the content item with a video thumbnail image. Click on the gray Watch Media button below the thumbnail to launch the floating Kaltura video player and view your video. 5 Note: Although the Kaltura video player will appear in the Announcements message with a Watch Media text line and possibly a thumbnail image, it will NOT work properly in the by default. Students have to visit the actual Blackboard webpage to view the video. 8. You can use any video unlimited times in unlimited courses with course copies intact. Enjoy!
