Monroe, Chicago, IL Deadline for application: 11:59 pm PST, April 20th, 2018 Chicago, Illinois, located on the shore of Lake Michigan, is filled with a diverse population of friendly, hardworking people, who love to share their city with visitors. This city is known worldwide for its jazz and blues heritage, its architectural history, its 26 miles of lakefront parks, its Picasso sculpture, its shopping along the Magnificent Mile, and its world-class museums. Including, the Art Institute of Chicago, with its famous Impressionist and Post-Impressionist collection, this city will not disappoint. Chicago s dining scene is eclectic and offers more than just their delicious deep-dish pizza, renowned Chicago-style hot dogs, popcorn, and beer. In 1969, seven jewelry and metal artists formed the Society of North American Goldsmiths (SNAG) after a meeting held in Chicago in They were united by a belief in the value of strengthening the jewelry and metals field through professional conferences and quality exhibitions. SNAG has since become a large creative community of artists coming from diverse backgrounds, artist-designers, makers, collectors, curators, historians, patrons, and the metalsmithing-curious. SNAG members are united by their ability to see potential to create artwork in a wide range of materials and processes. Members share a desire to create and a strong commitment to their community. Since the original group of smiths came together at the organization's first conference in 1970, the impact continues to resonate in the organization as SNAG endeavors to positively influence and enhance the livelihood of its large membership. 50 years later, SNAG is pleased to return to Chicago, where the first meeting took place, for our 48th Annual Conference, The Loop: Coming Full Circle. Theme: SNAG is celebrating 50 years as an organization. To talk about where we are going, we must talk about where we have have been. SNAG s 48th Annual Conference, The Loop: Coming Full Circle will celebrate SNAG s first 50 years by focusing on the history of our field and SNAG s vital place within that history, as both are inextricably intertwined through the collective pivotal moments that have brought the makers, educators, artists, and students in this field together and to where we are today. Along with presentations that look backward to explore significant moments and concepts in our history, both personal and collective, we will emphasize space for critical discourse, concepts/ideas, and technical presentations that speak to current questions and issues that exist in the field today. The 2019 Conference will launch SNAG into a year-long 50th Anniversary celebration culminating with the 2020 conference, which will celebrate the 50th anniversary of the spark lit at our first conference. By gathering to

2 explore where we have been, celebrate what we ve accomplished, and look at where we are going, we can build a strong foundation for SNAG s next 50 years -- and beyond! *If you have presented at the SNAG conference in the last 8 years, you will not be considered. This policy can be found at the bottom of this document in specifics and has been set forth by the SNAG Conference Guidelines. Presentation Format: The Conference Program Committee is seeking proposals under the theme The Loop: Coming Full Circle. Presentation topics that focus on the history of SNAG; the field as a whole; and the makers, educators, artists, and students that are exploring concepts, critical discourse, and technical aspects of the field including, but not limited to: The presenter s work and practice Techniques and processes The history and critical theory of jewelry, metalworking, and related subjects Jewelry and metalsmithing as a professional practice Critical discourse discussions that offer opposing opinions to further the conversation of the issue being discussed. Collectors and collections Looking for intergenerational collaborative proposals. Emphasis on various artists/curators/historians/etc for a panel presentation, rapid fires, or other unique presentation styles. (For example a curated group of three artists creating a theme and rapid-fire presentation proposal with representation from an established artist, a mid-career artist, and an emerging artist) Proposals that push the boundaries of a typical presentation style. (For example, a presentation not focused on the work you make, but rather your perspective on what others create and how it informs your work). There are three types of presentations we are seeking: 1. Mainstage Presentations: Thematically focused, traditional presentations lasting between 45 minutes and an hour. 2. Rapid Fire Presentations: 15-minute, fast-paced, thematic presentations by leaders in the field. They deliver information in a short, but memorable way. Each Rapid Fire session will feature three presentations grouped by theme. 3. Emerging Artists: 10-minute, fast-paced, presentations given by Early Career Artists surrounding their work and process. An emerging artist is defined as being out of school 5 years or less, whether graduate or undergraduate school or are within 5 years of the beginning of their career. The Programming Committee has the right to create a new type of presentation format if the proposals or timeline of the conference allows.

3 Application Process: All proposals must be completed and submitted by 11:59 pm (PST), April 20th, 2018 through the form found on the SNAG website. After you fill out the form on the website, you must then follow up with an with your supporting images to All proposals MUST include: Name(s) Address Phone number (cell preferred) address (our preferred method of contact) Working title A 90-second YouTube video proposal (preferred) or a written proposal abstract to 400 words Resume or CV Images of presenter s work and/or in support of the presentation topic, not to exceed 10 images total. Only include images that will strengthen the proposal PDF, jpg, or png documents only 300 dpi, high-resolution images. Images must be labeled Last Name, Title, Example: Clarke.Untitled jpg The committee reserves the right to select presenters who have not submitted proposals through this call. You will be notified of the decision by as soon as possible after the call closes and the programming committee makes their decisions. YouTube Video Proposal Submission While not required, the committee very strongly encourages a YouTube submission for this year s proposal abstract instead of a 200 to 400 written abstract. The video submission format allows the committee to get a clear sense of your presentation skills, and your ability to clearly and succinctly express your proposal ideas. The committee wants to see your face, please refrain from voice over recordings or slideshow presentations. The goal of the videos is to see how you present and a video is the best way to do so. We expect that many of you have not submitted in this format before, so we encourage you to explore the Recording and Uploading Videos to YouTube outline below. Make sure your submission is complete. Incomplete proposals will not be considered. Additional Responsibilities If chosen to present, your commitment to SNAG will be meeting all deadlines as outlined in your signed agreement, which include the following: Written and visual documentation (ex. short biography, description of the talk, and headshot)

4 A PowerPoint presentation All the necessary information in regards to your presentation (ex. AV requests, completed contracts in a timely manner, etc) Presentation Proposal Evaluation Criteria: All presentation proposals will be evaluated by the Conference Program Committee (a panel of your peers) using the following criteria: The topic is important or timely. The proposal is well conceived and developed. The focus is thoughtfully articulated. The proposal offers a diverse and/or broad perspective. The topic supports the theme of the conference. The 8-Year Rule *An eight-year rule applies to the selection of all speakers. This means that once a person has been a SNAG Conference speaker, as either a presenter or a panelist, eight years must pass before they can serve as a speaker again. For example, a speaker at the 2014 Minneapolis conference is again eligible for consideration in 2023, after eight years have passed. On rare occasions, if the Board of Directors deems it appropriate, exceptions can be made to the 8-year rule. Check List: Do you have everything ready? 5 Recording and Uploading Videos to YouTube There are many different options available when it comes to recording and uploading your videos. This tutorial will go over recording with a webcam, Android device, an iphone or ipad. Webcam: If you are using a Mac open Quicktime. Under the file, menu select New Movie Recording. Adjust the camera view and hit the red record button when you are ready. Press stop when you are finished. After your video is complete you will click on the Share tab. Here you will have the option to export your video to YouTube. Follow the instructions from here to Upload your video. Another option would be to record your video using Windows Movie Maker. After you open this program you will click on the Home tab and select Webcam Video. Adjust the camera view and hit the red record button to start. When you are finished click the blue stop button. If you are satisfied with your video save it. You will then log onto YouTube and select the Upload symbol in the upper right corner of the screen. From here follow the instructions to upload your video. Android Device: Use the YouTube Android app to upload videos by recording a new video or selecting an existing one. First sign in to your YouTube account. Then tap the camera icon from your home screen or account tab and record your video. After you finish recording you will be able to edit your video and adjust the title, description, and privacy settings. Tap the Upload button when you are ready to publish your video. iphone and ipad: Use the YouTube ios app to upload videos by recording a new video or selecting an existing one. First sign into your YouTube account. Once you ve done that tap the camera icon to record a new video. After you re finished recording you can apply any edits to your video. Tap Next when you re done. Adjust your video's title, description, and privacy settings. After this, you will be able to upload your video.
