1 UTILITY BOX WRAP ART REQUEST FOR QUALIFICATIONS DESCRIPTION OF PROJECT Beginning in 2010, the Playhouse District Association (PDA) began a temporary public art program to animate utility boxes along sidewalks throughout the district. Two installation programs have commenced since the first along Colorado Boulevard in 2011 and a second along Union Street and Los Robles Avenue in The program has been successful in drawing attention to the district, animating the public realm, and adding to the arts and culture niche for which we are known. Building on momentum, the PDA now seeks to select an artist/designer or artistic team to create new art designs for the series of five utility boxes along Colorado Boulevard currently wrapped with Susan Silton s art, Utility. The utility boxes are at the southeast corners of the following intersections (also shown in Attachment A): Colorado and Los Robles Colorado and Oakland Colorado and Madison Colorado and El Molino Colorado and Oak Knoll Each utility box is to feature one design which will be installed using a vinyl wrap around the four sides of the utility box. The art is considered to be temporary and will be in place for an estimated three five years. The artwork should work well both day and night, and highlight the Playhouse District s historic, theatrical heritage and cultural niche as an arts district with theaters, museums, bookstores, galleries and performance venues. Artists should also consider addressing/incorporating the rhythm of the utility boxes as they are experienced by pedestrians and motorists traversing the district. An honorarium of $2,000 will be paid to the selected artist or team. The Playhouse District Association will retain the rights to utilize the artwork in PDA newsletters, website, and other marketing materials promoting the District, and to refurbish the vinyl wraps. In addition the PDA will launch a publicity campaign with photos of the art installation and artist. The projected installation timeframe is October/November The deadline to respond to this Request for Qualifications is Friday, June 12, 2015 at 4:00 pm. 2 SCOPE OF WORK The selected artist/artist team will provide the following services: A letter agreement is to be executed stipulating the agreement terms between the artist and the Playhouse District Association along with additional criteria specifications Pre design Meeting: The successful team will meet with the Playhouse District Design & Physical Enhancement Committee to discuss the project and ask questions Development of Concept Design Meet to present Concept Design & receive comments on Concept Design Revise Concept Design and scaled model Meet to present Revised Concept Design and scaled model Present revised concept design to the City of Pasadena Arts & Culture Commission Incorporate additional refinements to Concept Design Refined Concept Design for approval Produce final digital files of designs and submit designs on a CD or flash drive plus a printed copy of each design The Playhouse District Association will order, produce, and install the artwork utilizing a vinyl wrap medium with an anti graffiti film. In addition the artist/artist team may be needed to work with the manufacturer / installer of the vinyl wrap if questions arise with the digital files and design wrapping WORK PRODUCT SPECIFICATIONS Five digital images Final art file format: EPS, PDF or TIFF format Color: Native RGB or CMYK Pantone Color: All Pantone colors need to be Solid Coated Colors Fonts: All fonts need to be outlined (converted to curves) and strokes need to be expanded Pictures and Photographs: All photographs and pictures placed or linked in the artwork need to be embedded. Files at 100% scale should be between 74 dpi and 150 dpi (dots per inch) Scale: Reduce to 10% example a 240 x 600 dpi document will be a 24 x dpi scaled at 10% THE PLAYHOUSE DISTRICT The Playhouse District is Pasadena s arts and cultural center with 2 performance theaters, 2 museums, 1 art film house, 3 centers for higher learning, 6 places of worship, Southern California s oldest bookstore, 7 galleries, many design businesses as well as shops, and numerous restaurants. 2

3 The Playhouse District Association is a property based business improvement district (PBID) in a public private partnership with the City of Pasadena. Funding for the PBID is primarily generated by the property owners within the District s boundaries through an assessment on their property taxes. Our PBID provides a suite of services to the District that go well beyond basic municipal services, including enhanced safety, clean streets, parking, and promotion programs.
