1 Shoot, Edit, and Share: Using Digital Video in Professional Development, Technical Assistance, and Dissemination Presented by Larry Edelman March 22, 2011 A webinar presented by AUCD 1 Purpose of the session Introduce key concepts regarding digital video and illustrate many ways that it is being used. 4 The State of Online Video We are seeing a surge in online video watching that is driven by a combination of broadband access, the increasing use of social networking sites, and the popularity of video sharing i sites, explains Kristen Purcell, Associate Director for Research at the Pew Research Center s Internet & American Life Project and author of the report. To tap into these trends, untold numbers of websites now showcase online video as part of their content. The State of Online Video, Pew Internet & American Life Project Releases/2010/State of Online Video.aspx 7 Streaming Video 12% of broadband users watch 25% or more of their television on broadband Amazon plans to stream 40,000 titles from its web site By 2011, 100 million households worldwide will watch broadband video on their televisions By 2013: long form video (over a few minutes in length) will grow to 23 billion streams a year; short clip video will increase to 150 billion streams; user regenerated video at around 273 billion streams 8 Edelman 4

From a recent survey of 504 college students: Eight in 10 students (78 percent) reported that professors have made lectures available either by live video feed or by posting a videotaped lecture for students t to access online. The majority said streaming allows them to "attend" classes even when they're out of town or when they want to attend versus when the university has the class scheduled. Nearly half said that one advantage of streaming video is that it would enable them to take multiple classes scheduled for the same time slot. 64 percent reported that viewing classes through video online lets them fast forward through the parts they don't find useful. The majority indicated dthey believe bli that video streaming helps hl improve the educational experience by helping them prepare better for exams (74 percent), improving their grades (54 percent), and learning more effectively than sitting in class (53 percent). students on streaming video get me outta class.aspx Edelman 6
