Ass n of Ridgecrest Arabian Breeders Central Coast of California AHA Conejo Valley AHA Drinkers of the Wind AHC Golden Empire AHS Insallah AHC Santa Barbara AHA Santa Ynez Valley AHA Region 2, 2017, Meetings January 14, 2017 July 15, 2017 November 4, 2017 AHA Board of Directors 2017 Meeting Dates Past Director, Region 2 Dear Region 2 AHA Members, AHA s 2016 Convention is now complete, and so is my second term as the Region 2 Director. I will leave it to your new Director, Joyce Schroeder, to bring you up to date on most of the news from convention. However, I want to highlight a few items. At Youth Nationals, Flora Elm Colone was elected President of the Arabian Horse Youth Association, and at Convention she was named Youth of the Year. These are very significant honors, and I am sure you will all join me in congratulating Flora and her mom, Kelly Elm. When I first became Director, AHA s business technology was in a sorry state. Much of our hardware and software was very out of date. There were times when a single failure could have made it impossible to transact business. Some of our software no longer could be maintained. I and several current and former board members worked with Cynthia and Bill Richardson, and AHA s Business Technology team to remedy the situation. The Future State program was planned and is being executed. Last year the new Website design went live. During the first week of December, the new financial system will go live. To facilitate the financial system switchover, the member portion of the website will be down for six days starting on November 30, If you have business that must be transacted, try to plan to get it done before or after that week. Competitions will be tackled next followed by Membership. When the Future State program is completed, AHA will conduct all of its business through the website portal and will be much more user-friendly, efficient, and effective. Over the last few years, AHA has revoked the charters of a significant number Region 2 s and many other regions clubs because they fell below the required minimum of 10 active adult and/or life members. At the August AHA Board meeting, I suggested that the Board sponsor an extraordinary resolution to reduce the number of members required to maintain a charter. At Convention, Resolution 1-16 passed. Now, an existing club can retain its charter with two adult/life members, though it still takes 10 members to have a delegate at Convention or on the Region 2 Board of Delegates. With diminishing numbers of AHA members, we do not want to encourage others to leave. I want to thank all of you sincerely for allowing me to serve as your Director for the last four years. It has been an honor and privilege. I wish you all happy holidays and hope you will spend even more quality time with your horses next year. Best Regards, Jay Greenberg Past Director, AHA Region 2 March 9-12, 2017 August 3-6, 2017 November 14-19, 2017 at Convention which will be in Denver for 2017 See page 2, 2016 by Lorry Wagner, editor
2 First of all, let me thank all of the delegates who attended the last meeting in Bakersfield and elected me your Incoming Director for It is a privilege to serve with you and for you and the members of your individual clubs together we can accomplish many things. Secondly, I would like to thank our Outgoing Director, Jay Greenberg, for his four years of leadership and direction within the Region. Most do not know or appreciate the hours involved with being a Director and as I move into that position, know that I will be seeking advice from those members of our Board who have served us in the past. I look forward to working with the Officers selected and will be spreading the responsibilities to them as we move forward. Convention was as always a learning experience for any who may attend, and I thank the following for being there and representing their clubs: Kelly Elm, Nancy and Rod Goertzen, Penny Wardlaw, AnnMarie Rossi, Annette Wells, Jay Greenberg and myself. There are so many others that I hope will look at next year in Denver and join us there in hopes that we make a difference within the Arabian community. As far as Resolutions, several were withdrawn, most had little discussion and were passed in Session following discussion among many of the committees the most discussed Resolution was the shoeing changes, and after several rewrites, it was passed unanimously and with flair and humor I sat in on several committee meetings and will provide some insight there but will also ask the other Delegates who attended to give their impressions as to the workings and information provided by those areas they chose which were important to them. I attended the Convention Planning meeting, and having learned that according to Bylaws we are obligated to plan two years out with selection of locations the committee contacted at least 40 hotels/locations, many that turned down our request, some did not respond, and quite a few were very costly with room rates from $135 - $350 per night NOPE! As it stands now, we will return to the Denver area in 2017, and back to Tulsa for 2018/2019 with a guaranteed room rate of $99 per night and funding from the Tulsa Convention and Tourism board even though many will have been there many times, it is certainly the most cost effective. There is still hope that in the future Regions will step up again to host a Convention and several did take the informational packet provided to determine if it is something that they could handle even with teaming with another Region or two to be the host. Interesting information received: Judges: 268 Judges, 153 National judges, 66 R judges, 49 r rated, 109 stewards (down 3 from last year). The Judges school coming up in Decembers show 80 judges to recertify, 40 attending, and 13 coming for evaluation Stan indicated that we are in need of both new judging prospects as well as stewards the ones that we have are aging out and we need to bring in new candidates. AHA membership is down and it appears we lose more each year so we certainly need to reach out to all within our Region to encourage participation at any level. As you probably know, Flora ElmColone was selected as Youth of the Year with 6 applicants and scholarships available to those who win and come in as second runner up Flora did an amazing job giving the report from AHYA and also her acceptance speech..proud of you Flora! Please, any of you with youth in your clubs, check out Youth Scholarship Programs with AHA, and the Arabian Horse Foundation with a contribution from Region 14 will be funding a Youth Scholarship in memory of Bill Pennington at convention donations from individuals and regions provided over $20,000 required to fund this the Foundation is the 501.c3 arm of AHA to do this work. Funding going into the Foundation promotes two areas: research and education. Mary Trowbridge gave a wonderful presentation on the Arabian Horse Distress Fund with donations from the convention floor of $20, 390, covering most all regions donating as well as many individuals. Region 2 donated $500 to AHDF and $500 to the Bill Pennington Youth Scholarship fund in memory or our own, Vicky Rich. Donations to the AHDF fund in 2016 was over $350,000 with much given to those in need in many areas, from illness, loss of property, etc large donations as well as small amounts of $25 being sent monthly it all helps our extended family. Much discussion about Future State the updated website with all kinds of information that is relevant to our organization and many sites that answer so many questions please provide and complete Club biographies for the site, check resolution decisions, youth programs, membership renewals, marketing and how that site can assist your club with all kinds of ideas, learn about Goldie and that program, go to the Discovery section on the web and download pdf files that will be available to clubs to download and print materials for your use free except to you for printing there are video ads on YouTube, check out the Time to Ride program, use social media to reach out I could go on and on!! But you do some research and see what is available. It is quite evident that social media is on the rise for all age groups so I guess I better get connected. 3 Incoming Director s Message, (cont. from page 2) Many of you do not know that Bill Richards, husband of Cynthia, has been working as a volunteer for AHA for the past few years on the new updated technology for AHA, spending many days in the office and at home if we had had to pay someone for this, it would have been VERY costly my hat is off to Bill and to Cynthia for her great leadership as our outgoing AHA President, and look forward to working with our new officers, Nancy Harvey as President, Deborah Johnson as Vice President, Treasurer Bob Nash and Secretary, Jan Decker. What a strong board and so dedicated! Your Director Joyce Schroeder Motions Passed at the November 5, 2016 Delegates Meeting Shawna McCune, Secretary No motions were passed at this meeting. AHA 2016 Convention Report Submitted by Nancy & Rod Goertzen The 2016 Convention was the second time that Rod and I were able to attend. It is a gathering of Arabian horse people from all over the United States. This year there were only 15 resolutions to consider with most of the interest in the proposed shoeing rules. Road and I attended several committee meetings: Professional Horsemen, Ethics, Membership, Equine Stress, Adequan presentation and the Amateur meeting. Most of what happened at these meetings was discussion on the resolutions. I would like to have seen ideas shared at the Membership meeting as to how to reach out and entice new members! Keynote speaker for the Convention was Patti Colbert who was spot on in her presentation and assessment as to how we reach out and bring in new members and interest to the breed. She had great ideas! Be proactive, quit bemoaning the economy, be excited, and JUST DO IT! If we don t pay attention, we will continue to decline. Check out her Time to Ride program with the American Horse Council she says we need to get with it in our technology programs and use facebook, twitter, tweet, go online for marketing tools, and think like a non horse person! The presentation by the Marketing, Development and Promotion committee introduced Goldie the Arabian horse to us! Great idea! Check out Arabian Horses for Humanity on the AHA site two were sold at Convention! Purchase, connect with a charity, have it painted by an artist, auction it off, funds go to charity! Proven that it works in Texas, there are bulls, cows and penguins all over the place! Region 2 Newsletter, November,2016 Page 3
4 Hopefully with working together we will move forward. If you have questions about any of the meetings that we attended, please don t hesitate to ask. Region 2 Endurance Riding Marci Cunningham The 2016 Region 2 Championship Endurance Ride was held in conjunction with the Bill Thornburgh Friends and Family endurance ride on October 22nd in Inyokern. There were 7 cross entries, 5 Arabians and 2 Half Arab/Anglo Arabs. All horses completed the fifty mile course and their riders should be commended for good horsemanship as it was a hot day. Champion in the Half Arab/Anglo Arab division was Terry Castellano on her Half Arabian Forever Fibbin, who was also first over all in a ride time of just under five hours. Reserve Champion in this division was Kerrie Tuley on her Anglo Arabian RHA Ambersuns Raynne. The Arabian Championship Division had five entries and was won by MG Sedona piloted by Janet Worts while the Reserve Champion went to Ffigero VF ridden by Terry Banister. MG Sedona took home the overall Best Condition Award. In addition to their completion awards all riders received an award just for cross entering into the championship ride. Platinum Performance was generous in their sponsorship by providing Platinum Performance Equine samples and ball caps for all entrants. They also donated a ten pound bucket of Platinum Performance Equine for the horse judged Best Condition by the ride veterinarian. Submitted by: Marci Cunningham AHA Endurance Ride Steward Flora ElmColone, Region 2 Youth Chair and AHYA President sunkissed411@gmail.com Our goals for the upcoming year are to continue fundraising, especially at Youth Nationals & US Nationals, for each AHYA Board member to raise at least $500 in Tshirt sponsorships, and refresh and update fundraisers and activities at Youth Nationals. AHYA is looking for new chairs for the Youth Activities committee, the Canadian Nationals committee, and the Working Western committee. We discussed Youth Nationals and came up with many new ideas for fundraisers and youth activities. We will further look into these ideas at our Board of Directors meeting in March. Flora ElmColone, AHYA President & Kate Lewis, AHYA Vice President will be attending the American Youth Horse Council Leadership Symposium in Boston, Massachusetts this April on behalf of the Arabian Horse Youth Association. Region 1, Region 4, Region 6, Region 7, Region 12, Region 15, Region 16, and Region 18 are still looking for Youth Directors. We are trying to increase personal outreach to these regions to fill these positions by having the members of the Youth Board write letters to the Adult Directors and Youth Coordinators of these regions.
