1 Air Navigation Service Providers ATN and FANS Data Link Solutions
2 European Commission Data Link Mandate The implementation of Data Link is key to increasing Air Traffic Control efficiency, capacity and safety by eliminating operational problems inherent in voice communication. The Aeronautical Telecommunications Network (ATN) provides the communication technology to support these Data Link enabled ATC services. The European Commission have mandated that ANSPs must support CPDLC for all aircraft operating in EU airspace by February (Commission Regulation, EC No29/2009, amended by EC 2015/310). Airtel ATN Solutions Airtel ATN is a leading provider of Air/Ground Data Communication software, infrastructure and test equipment, delivering CPDLC compliance across Europe and in over 35 countries worldwide. Several European ANSPs and over 2,500 aircraft are Data Link enabled by Airtel ATN software and equipment. Airtel ATN s Solutions for ANSPs include: n CPDLC/ADS-C Air/Ground Data Link Servers (ATN, FANS) n Network Infrastructure and Routers (VDL, SATCOM, POA) n CPDLC/ADS-C Ground Test Systems n Portable Test Systems (VDL, SATCOM, CPDLC, ADS-C) n VDL M2 Monitoring Systems Data Link System Architecture
3 Air/Ground Data Link Server (AGDLS) The ATN Air/Ground Data Link System (AGDLS) is responsible for handling Data Link communications for an ATC centre. It supports applications such as CM, CPDLC and ADS-C. The AGDLS comes in two typical configurations: n Front End Processor (FEP): The FEP handles message formatting and communications with aircraft while the Data Link services are implemented in the FDPS. n Data Link Server (DLS): The DLS incorporates all the DL-FEP functionality and also implements ATC communications services, simplifying the implementation in the FDPS. The logical components of the AGDLS are: Data Link Service Functions (DLSF) The DLSF Components implement the Data Link Services procedures including ATC Communications Management (ACM), Air Traffic Clearance (ACL) and Aircraft Microphone Check (AMC), Air Traffic Clearance (ACL) and Aircraft Microphone check (AMC). The DSLF send and receive messages to and from aircraft via the DLC-FE. Data Link Communications Front End (DLC-FE) The DLC-FE handles communications between the Air Traffic Controller Working Position and the Data Link equipped aircraft. The DLC-FE s main function is to implement the Data Link Initiation Capability function. It maps Flight ID and ICAO 24-bit addresses to ATN or FANS addresses and sends/ receives fully encoded messages to and from aircraft. ATN Communications Stack The ATN Communications Stack interfaces with an ATN Access (Ground/Ground) Router which interconnects the AGDLS with the Data Link Service Provider Network. FANS Support The FANS Accommodation Mapper handles the translation between ATN and FANS messages, while the FANS Communication Stack provides an interface to the ACARS. 4 Test Equipment and Services Airtel ATN s test equipment and services are the de-facto industry standard for testing and validating ATN implementations. Airtel ATN s test equipment is used by EUROCONTROL s LINK2000+ Test Facility. Airborne Data Link System Emulation Tool (Manual or Automatic) The Air Manual Data Link System Emulation Tool (AMT) provides a GUI for sending/ receiving CM/CPDLC primitives. The Air Automatic Data Link System Emulation Tool (AAT) implements script based automatic responses to uplink messages from an ATC centre. These tools support the testing of: n Context Management n CPDLC Connectivity Management n Full EUROCAE ED-110B CPDLC message set n Error test cases n Recording of messages and events Ground Validation Suite (GVS) The GVS provides a script based interface to send/receive ATN and FANS CM/CPDLC messages. It emulates up to 1,000 aircraft. Shadow System The GVS shadow extension allows shadowing of CM/CPDLC data traffic from live flight plans for use on the test system and provides more authentic data for both validation and training purposes. Mini VDR Airtel ATN s Test Equipment and services can be used in conjunction with its Mini-VDRs to provide a full simulation of ATC communications including the VDL air/ground links. Multi Test Platform The Multi Test Platform (MTP) Test and Diagnostic Station Combines the Mini-VDR with a PC, power supplies and control circuits to provide a fully portable VDL test and monitoring station. Benefits n Adaptable - Airtel ATN technology has been used to test a variety of FDPS/AGDLS systems and supports the full CPDLC message set. n Proven Technology - Used by the EUROCONTROL Test Centre in Brétigny. 13 ANSPs in Europe have used Airtel ATN test equipment and Harris has used Airtel ATN test equipment to verify VDL coverage for over 50 major airports in the U.S. The test tools are based on Airtel ATN s operational airborne software. n Experience - Airtel ATN test tools are the de-facto industry standard for testing and validating ATN implementations.
