IPv6 Address Allocation Status in AP region and the way forward APAN30 meeting, Hanoi Vietnam 11 August 2010 Champika Wijayatunga Training Manager, APNIC 1

Regional Internet Registries The Internet community established the RIRs to provide fair and consistent resource distribution and accurate resource registration throughout the world. 2

3 APNIC Sub-regions

Where do IP addresses come from? Standards Allocation Regional Internet Registries (RIR) distribute IPv4, IPv6, and AS numbers to the Internet community Allocation * RIRs maintain accurate registration of Internet resource usage for the community * In some cases via an NIR, such as CNNIC, JPNIC etc. Assignment End user

IPv6 Address Policy: The policy development process Need OPEN Anyone can participate Evaluate Discuss BOTTOM UP Implement Internet community proposes and approves policy Consensus TRANSPARENT All decisions & policies are documented & available

Criteria to receive IPv6 addresses Initial IPv6 block for APNIC members with existing IPv4 space Criteria APNIC members that have received an IPv4 address block from APNIC but have no IPv6 space can qualify for an appropriately sized IPv6 block under the matching IPv6 policy. 6

Criteria to receive IPv6 addresses 7 Initial Allocation Criteria Criteria Be an LIR Not be an end site Plan to provide IPv6 connectivity to organizations to which it will make assignments. Meet one of the two following criteria: Have a plan for making at least 200 assignments to other organizations within two years OR Be an existing LIR with IPv4 allocations from an APNIC or an NIR, which will make IPv6 assignments or sub-allocations to other organizations and announce the allocation in the inter-domain routing system within two years

IPv6 Allocations RIRs to Members June 2010 Source: NRO Internet Number Resource Report

IPv6 Allocations RIRs to LIRs (Jan 1999 June 2010) How many total allocations have been made by each RIR? In terms of /32s, how much total space has each RIR allocated? June 2010 Source: NRO Internet Number Resource Report

IPv6 Assignments RIRs to End Users June 2010 Source: NRO Internet Number Resource Report

APNIC Resource Delegations IPv6 IPv4 Source: NRO Internet Number Resource Report

Total IPv6 Delegations in AP prop-073: Simplifying allocation/assignment of IPv6 to APNIC members with existing IPv4 addresses - implemented on 10 February 2010

APNIC IPv6 Allocations By Economy 14 as of 11/08/2010

Is the global community deploying IPv6? The upward trend in the size of the BGP Forwarding Table (FIB) 15 as of 11/08/2010

Ratio of IPv6 to IPv4 ASes IPv6:IPv4 ASNs 16 Measuring IPv6 Deployment by Geoff Huston, APNIC

APNIC IPv6 Readiness Survey 2009 If not, why not considering IPv6? 70% 60% 58% 50% 40% 42% 33% 30% 20% 10% 23% 19% 18% 14% 14% 10% 8% 0% n=118

APNIC IPv6 Readiness Survey 2009 No 29% Yes 71% 18 Does your organization have, or consider having an IPv6 allocation and/or assignment? (Sept 2009) n=192

APNIC IPv6 Readiness Survey Have you deployed or are you ready for immediate IPv6 deployment? 2009 Does your organization have a formal plan to deal with the deployment of IPv6? 19

APNIC IPv6 Readiness Survey Has your organization budgeted for future resource allocation for IPv6 deployment? Has your organization allocated resources (human or financial) for IPv6 deployment?

21 In Conclusion

World Internet Penetration Internet Penetration is only at 26.6%, but IPv4 address is running out already with only 5% remaining 22

IPv4 Consumption: Projection Projected IANA exhaustion: 17/06/2011 Projected RIR exhaustion: 19/02/ Aug 2010

Prepare for IPv6 Now IPv4 will run out less than 2 year s time Enable IPv6 in your network Do something small but DO NOT delay Future-proof your network with IPv6! 24

Your IPv6 planning checklist 25 How can you support your management to make the deployment of IPv6 efficient. Integrate IPv6 spending into your 2010 budgets Include budget allocation for IPv6 test beds and initial deployment Make a plan to up-skill your staff ICONS Wiki IPv6 IPv6 training/consulting services providers Obtain IPv6 addresses from APNIC helpdesk@apnic.net
