3 Why A New App? Radiology resident training commonly involves reviewing and analyzing teaching cases. Textbook cases have selected STATIC images illustrating the key findings lack the real time experience of scrolling through cross sectional images during case interrogation. Reviewing cases directly on PACS usually requires dedicated workstations and/or software. Routine radiology reports may lack the format for the most effective teaching purposes. Radiology teaching needs to catch up with the new technologies and learning styles.

Most devices have touch screens that support user interaction using hand gestures. Demands exist for portable learning modules and teaching platform suited for self-directed learning on hand-held devices.

5 Residents Survey A questionnaire was sent out to the radiology residents (R1 through R4) at UVMMC to assess the demands and preferences. Questions focused on the mobile format of teaching cases. 16 out 24 (67.7%) responded to the survey. The majority favor the mobile format. 8 Key Features A web based teaching module was created with the display interface tailored to handheld mobile devices PHP for content rendering Javascript for touch-event detection. AJAX web technique was used to exchange data between the server and webpages. Ability to SCROLL through the cross-sectional images in forward and backward directions. Additional capability to view coronal or sagittal planes to simulate studying on a PACS workstation. The teaching points can be revealed by tapping the link in the sliding menu. The cases are stored remotely rather than locally. New teaching cases can be created REAL TIME without coding change or underlying software architecture alteration.

Current Target Use The web-based teaching module can be assessed via any mobile device at locations with Wi-Fi connections NO NEED to download or install any app.

11 Current Target Use The web-based teaching module can be assessed via any mobile device at locations with Wi-Fi connections NO NEED to download or install any app. Consists of ~150 cases that are representative of the common ER scenarios on cross-sectional modalities such as CT, MR, US. Particularly helpful for junior radiology residents who are starting to take overnight calls and wish to increase their exposure to the various urgent pathologies.
