Also check to see if the Synchronize only after date is the one you want it to be. You can change it if you need to view earlier dates on your device. If you are having difficulty viewing all desired dates on your device, change the NEXT SYNCHRONIZATION drop-down beside the calendar to Slow(Full) 19

itunes Overview itunes is the software which is installed on your computer. This software is used to sync your device, backup your ipad data and access a wealth of free resources (such as itunes U). Your itunes account should be logged in on both your computer and your ipad when syncing. Understanding Syncing Syncing your device is important for backup, software installation and general maintenance of your ipad. Although not necessary on a daily basis, this should become a weekly or biweekly habit. When syncing your device, you can also view software updates, choose what to sync and access customization of your syncing practices and ipad setup. Oftentimes syncing your ipad can solve many minor technical issues, as this can update everything as you sync. In addition, this creates a backup of your applications, settings and pre-determined files. Sharing Files via itunes When syncing your ipad to your computer, it is important to know where to find your files on your PC. Follow these steps for locating your files on itunes: In an application that allows for sending to itunes, when you access the Share option, choose Send to itunes. Choose the format of the document. Remember that you must choose a format that matches a piece of software on your PC. For example, do not choose Pages format, if you do not have Pages software on your computer. Plug in your device. After sync is complete, click on the name of your device. Click on the Apps tab. Scroll down to the bottom of the page to the File Sharing section. 21

1. Click on the application that you used to create the file which you are wanting to access. 2. Choose the document you wish to access on your computer. 3. Click on the Save to button. 4. Choose your location for saving. Now your file is on your computer. 22

TIPS AND SHORTCUTS There are many shortcuts and tricks that make the use of the ipad even more efficient. Here are some of those tips: Keyboard Tips Keyboard Trick: If you are using the on screen keyboard and you want to type an apostrophe and you do not want to have to switch back and forth between the letter and number keyboards, simply press and hold down the exclamation key and choose the apostrophe. Several other keys have additional options, as well. If there is an international letter needed, try pressing and holding the related letter. Also, the question mark gets you to the quotation mark. Turn on Caps Lock: To turn on Caps Lock, simply double tap the shift key. Gesture Tips Zooming: To zoom in or out, simply pinch 2 fingers together or apart. This can work in Safari, documents, images and some other apps. Application Switching: For switching between applications, use 4 or 5 fingers and swipe left or right. Multitasking Bar: To reveal the Multitasking Bar (open applications), use 4 or 5 fingers and swipe up. Multitasking Bar Tips: The first view of the Multitasking Bar shows everything you have opened with the most recent application first. If you need to force close an application, go to the Multitasking Bar, 23

hold down the application icon until it shakes. Then press the red minus sign to close the application. Notifications: To reveal notifications, swipe from the top of the screen down with 1 finger. Turn these off in Settings if desired. Basic Tips Make App Folders: If you need to organize your applications, try making folders to group your related icons. For example, if you wanted to make a folder just for Games, press and hold on one game icon. When it starts to shake, drag it over another app icon with which you want this one grouped. You will notice the second app highlight. Drop the first app icon into the highlighted area of the second app icon. Name your folder appropriately. Continue to drag and drop icons until your desired folders are made. To stop the app icons from shaking, click the Home Button once. Take a Screenshot of Your ipad: When you need to capture what is displaying on your ipad screen, hold down the Home button and then press down the power button. The screen will flash and the camera will click. The image is stored in your Photos app. Saving Battery Life: Do not just turn off the screen by pressing the power button. This just puts your ipad to sleep. When you do not need your ipad for a while, shut it down by holding down the Home button and the Power button. A red slider will appear. Slide it and your ipad will really shut down. Selecting Text to Copy: If you want to select a word or short phrase, simply press and hold on the word, then drag and select copy. For selecting more text to copy and paste from one place to another, simply tap on a paragraph 4 times and the entire paragraph will be selected. Then you can simply choose Copy. 24

Return to the Top of a Page: When scrolling down a lengthy page of content, avoid having to scroll to the top of the page by tapping the title bar at the top of the screen. Software Approvals and the Purchase of Apps In order to more efficiently complete the process for the purchase of applications for an ipad, we have a list of pre-approved applications for which a Software Approval is NOT needed. If the desired app is not on this list, please submit an online Software Approval in order to determine its compatibility. This list of pre-approved apps is in constant revision and can be found at: The apps are also listed by grade level and subject area for easy reference. 25
