2 Web Development Tools I. Course Prefix/Number: CIS 152/050 II. CIS 152/050 Web Development Tools Syllabus Course Name: Web Development Tools Credits: 3 (3 lecture; 1 lab) Course Instructor: Ross H. Capaccio, MA Division Telephone Number: (847) Room Number: 2627, Des Plaines Campus Time: 6:00pm 9:55pm, Monday Office Hours: Monday 3:30pm 5:30pm, Room 2118 (or by appointment). rcapacci@oakton.edu rcapaccio@earthlink.net Faculty Web Site: Prerequisite CIS131 Web Page Development (with a minimum grade of a C) or consent of instructor or Program Coordinator III. Course (Catalog) Description Course introduces Web development tools, including HTML editors and Web site managers as well as graphics manipulation tools. Content includes use of these tools to create interactive Web sites which integrate cascading style sheets, DHTML components and JavaScript. IV. Learning Objectives Upon completion of this course, the student should be able to: Code basic Web languages HTML, CSS, JavaScript/jQuery using a Web editor. Manage Web site structure and organization Optimize images and information for use on the Web Design/Develop for browser compatibility Design/Develop for mobile, tablet, and desktop devices Use tools designed to make workflow easier and simpler Manage and build a CMS Web site Become knowledgeable of frameworks and libraries outside the core requirements of the class 1
3 V. Academic Integrity Students and employees at Oakton Community College are required to demonstrate academic integrity and follow Oakton's Code of Academic Conduct. This code prohibits: Cheating, Plagiarism (turning in work not written by you, or lacking proper citation), Falsification and fabrication (lying or distorting the truth), Helping others to cheat, Unauthorized changes on official documents, Pretending to be someone else or having someone else pretend to be you, Making or accepting bribes, special favors, or threats, and Any other behavior that violates academic integrity. There are serious consequences to violations of the academic integrity policy. Oakton's policies and procedures provide students a fair hearing if a complaint is made against you. If you are found to have violated the policy, the minimum penalty is failure on the assignment and, a disciplinary record will be established and kept on file in the office of the Vice President for Student Affairs for a period of 3 years. 4 VI. Outline of Topics Weeks 1-3 HTML/CSS Weeks 4-5 JavaScript Weeks 6-7 jquery Weeks 8-9 Intro. Responsive Web Design Weeks Server-side Technology (PHP/MySQL & CMS) Week 13 User experience Design (UX) Week 14 Version Software, Analytics, and Final Exam VII. Methods of Instruction Lecture material will be given during class and will be based on the following books, in addition to found materials online: JavaScript & jquery Interactive Front-End Web Development Most classes will consist of 50% lecture and 50% coding exercises. Lecture will be followed by a one hour lab session in which you will be assigned a weekly lab project. This must be completed before the following class begins. In addition to this, you will also be tasked with completing a series of code exercises on Codecademy Web site. This will count as your homework grade. Perform the hands-on activities. Read and respond to postings regarding magazine articles, Web sites, newspaper articles, and student questions as indicated. VIII. Course Practices Required 100% Attendance is expected throughout the course. Lesson topics are short and failing to do so will result in missing course knowledge for that class. In order to earn a passing grade (A, B, or C), you must (minimally) complete one (1) exam, seven-ten (7-10) projects, three (3) quizzes, and three (3) homework assignments. Your final grade will be based on your total (actual) points earned. IX. Instructional Materials Note: Home/Lab computer, Flash drive, Pen/Notebook Software/Tools: FTP client, IDE (ie Dreamweaver, notepad, sublime text) 3

Evaluation of other homework assignments Assigned work evaluated as follows: 4 In-class quizzes (50 point each). 200 points 4 Homework Assignments (50 point each) 200 points 10 Projects (40 point each).400 points Comprehensive Final Exam. 200 points GRAND TOTAL points Grade Distribution Grade/Percent Point Range A (90%) B (80%) C (70%) F (less than 70%) The instructor reserves the right to make changes to the syllabus on an as needed basis. Any such changes will be ed to you via D2L. It is your responsibility to read about these changes using your D2L account. This syllabus is a contract between you and me regarding my expectations of you in CIS and your expectations of me. It is expected that you have read the syllabus and understand the structure and expectations for CIS for the Spring 2017 semester. 4

The College will not waive any essential skill or requirement of a course or degree program. B. College Policy on Observance of Religious Holidays: Oakton Community College recognizes the broad diversity of religious beliefs of its student body. To resolve conflicts that could arise from various observances, it is the College s practice that, when possible, examinations and major assignments should not be scheduled for these times. If exams or assignments must occur on a major religious holiday, students who inform instructors ahead of time of their intended absence will not be penalized. It is the responsibility of the student to inform his or her instructor(s) well in advance of intended absence. C. RESPONSIBLE USE OF COMPUTERS AND INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY: You may use any of the computer labs at either the Des Plaines or Ray Hartstein (Skokie) campuses to do work outside of the scheduled class time. Rules for computer use are posted in computer labs as well as available in writing in each of the labs. Lab assistants and tutors are available to assist you in the lab regarding software and hardware questions. If you have a question about an assignment, however, you should contact me. You may use your own computer at home or work if you have whichever software package we are working with for that particular assignment. Use of Oakton Information Technology resources is subject to policies and guidelines posted online at UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES ARE ANY OF THE SOFTWARE USED AT OAKTON TO BE COPIED. Our licensing agreement specifically forbids making more than the authorized number of copies; we have already made the maximum number of copies. Besides, due to the nature of Windows software, in nearly all cases it won t work when copied. D. HOWEVER, CERTAIN MICROSOFT SOFTWARE IS AVAILABLE: Oakton Community College has partnered with the MSDN (Microsoft Developer Network) Academic Alliance and DreamSpark Premium to provide credit students who are registered for CTIS (CIS and CAB) courses some of Microsoft s software that you may use to complete your studies. It may not be reproduced, redistributed, sold, rented, leased, or transferred to any third party including contractors, other students, other department s personnel, other companies, or consultants performing services. Any reproduction or redistribution of the software is prohibited by law, and may result in severe civil and criminal penalties. Currently this software includes MS Visual Studio.NET 2015, Microsoft Office Access 2013, Windows 7, Windows 10, Project Professional 2013, and Microsoft Visio Professional This service does not provide installation support, nor does Oakton. Unfortunately, Microsoft Office (other than Access) is not part of this software partnership, so Word, Excel, and PowerPoint are not available. Sorry. BUT, Microsoft Office is available through a separate deal called Office In Education found at - just as with the DreamSpark, Oakton provides NO support for this. I ll explain what is involved in class. Other non-microsoft software is not available, but as a student you qualify for academic pricing on many software packages. Check with the Oakton bookstore or search for academic priced software in your favorite search engine. 8
10 E. TUTORS Faculty tutors and student tutors are available in the Learning Center on both campuses and the 2600 labs on the Des Plaines campus.
