2 Course Description: Learners progress through a variety of case studies and role-playing exercises, which include gathering requirements, designing basic networks, establishing proof-of-concept, performing project management tasks, lifecycle services, including upgrades, competitive analyses, and system integration. This is the fourth course in the four course series preparing students for the CISCO Certified Network Administrator certification. 3 Methods of Teaching and Learning Lecture: Lab Assignments: Skills Assignments: Capstone Project: Course Objectives and/or Competencies: A. Course Objectives: Gather customer requirements to design a simple network using Cisco technology; design an IP addressing scheme; create an equipment list to meet LAN design requirements; create and resend a proposal to a customer; and obtain and upgrade Cisco IOS Software in Cisco devices while installing and configuring a prototype network. B. Course Competencies: Upon completion of, students will be able to: 1. Describe the design considerations for a WAN 2. Use the six phases of the PPDIOO model to respond to a Request for Proposal or Request for Quote. 3. Identify the strengths and weaknesses of a given network and create a Network Design Requirements document. 4. Identify the effects on a network design of various common network applications 5. Design the core, distribution and access layer topologies for a campus network incorporating wireless, remote access and security considerations. 6. Select an appropriate IP addressing scheme, naming structure and protocol for an IPv4 or IPv6 network. 7. Create a test plan to perform prototype tests and proof-of-concept tests. 8. Describe how to set up and configure Frame Relay and VPN connections. 9. Present a network upgrade proposal including implementation schedules and costs summaries. 10. Research job opportunities in the IT field, write resumes and prepare for a job interview. 3

Use the time to catch BREAK up if necessary. Capstone Project 20% Late Work, Attendance and Make Up Work Policies: TESTS will be taken the first hour of class in the classroom. Assignments are due at the beginning of class on the specified date. It is your responsibility to find out what you missed, to turn in assignments on time, to prepare for tests, etc. Students 4
5 should have completed the specified text readings and be prepared for class discussion of Lab Work. Assignments turned in after class on the same day will be docked 10 points; those turned in after the date due will be docked 10 points per day. NO WORK will be accepted more than one week late unless special arrangements have been made with the instructor. BEST BET: DO THE WORK EARLY. If you are going to miss a test, let me know. I will make arrangements for you to take the test. If you miss the test for some emergency reason - let me know AS SOON AS POSSIBLE either by dburgett@mclennan.edu) or by phone ( ). If there is a legitimate reason for missing the test, you may make it up without penalty. If you fail to let me know in a timely way, or do not have a valid excuse for missing the test, you will be penalized for each day you are tardy in taking the test. When you make up the test, you must bring a written note describing the reason for your missing the original test and describing when and how you contacted me about taking the makeup test. The note will count as much as one question. TESTS must be made up before the next class, unless arrangements are made. All tests must be taken in the Micro Lab test center or as a group in the AS 207 classroom.. Student Behavioral Expectations or Conduct Policy: To be successful in this class it is crucial that you as the student carry through with your responsibilities of learning and applying the material. Key to this is: A. reading, understanding and abiding by the Syllabus; B. checking MCC student and the discussion forums daily; C. keeping up with the readings, complete the assigned tutorials, and taking the chapter reviews on time; D. studying appropriately; E. devoting the right amount of time to this class to be successful; F. being conscientious, responsible and accountable; G. contacting instructor with any issues; and H. being professional, courteous and respectful to the instructor and to each other. MCC Academic Integrity Statement: The Center for Academic Integrity, of which McLennan Community College is a member, defines academic integrity as a commitment, even in the face of adversity, to five fundamental values: honesty, trust, fairness, respect, and responsibility. Students who commit violations of academic integrity should expect serious consequences. Academic Integrity Statement: I do not tolerate cheating and plagiarism in any form or for any excuse. I expect you to conform the college's code of academic honesty as specified in the Rules and Regulations of the MCC Highlander Guide (Article VII - Proscribed Conduct). This includes cheating, plagiarism, failing to follow instructions, representing someone else's work to be your own or having your work represented as someone else's, using notes or text inappropriately, submitting work not completed individually by the student, and any other form of a dishonest representation of a student's work or performance. While I encourage you to work together, there are situations where work is expected to be the student s whose name appears on the work. Quizzes and exams are obvious examples of where cheating will not be tolerated. All assignments must be completed personally and individually by the student. Do not do any part of someone else's assignment nor allow them to use your work unless specified by in the assignment by me, the instructor. If I suspect you of any misconduct, I will contact you and ask for an explanation. After hearing your explanation, I will then make a decision. If I do find you have cheated or plagiarized, the first offense will be a zero on the assignment. The second offense for cheating and/or plagiarism of any sort is failure of the course. Furthermore, you could also face expulsion from MCC. The course instructor and other MCC personnel will decide consequences of your inappropriate misconduct beyond failure of course. NEW FROM CISCO: Cisco considers using Braindump Test websites/materials to be unethical, illegal and reason for dismissal from the Cisco Academy program. Once a test has begun, you may not open any other website or application until the test has been completed. No materials may be brought to the test. You will be given 3 pages of scratch paper to use as needed, and it must be returned at the end of the test. 6
7 MCC Attendance Policy: Regular and punctual attendance is expected of all students, and each instructor will maintain a complete record of attendance for the entire length of each course, including online and hybrid courses. Students will be counted absent from class meetings missed, beginning with the first official day of classes. Students, whether present or absent, are responsible for all material presented or assigned for a course and will be held accountable for such materials in the determination of course grades. In the case of online and hybrid courses, attendance will be determined in terms of participation, as described in the course syllabus. Please refer to the Highlander Guide for the complete policy.
