29 Changing Passwords on Campus Systems General Password Information Passwords must be a minimum of six characters and a maximum of 32 characters long. Passwords must be unique in that they cannot be reused. Use characters including both letters and digits, and avoid anything that could be easily guessed. Your password should contain at least one numeric or special character. (If you choose to include a special character be aware that Falcon has an incompatability with several of these special characters.) You will be prompted to reenter the password you have chosen in order to verify it. Forgotten or Expired Passwords If a users forgets any JMU system password, or is unable to change their password, they must come in person to the HelpDesk with a photo ID card. The HelpDesk will determine which password(s) needs reinitializing and will submit a request for the change to the system operations area. The process of reinitializing a password normally takes two hours. Reinitializing the password sets it to a default that enables the user to log onto the system and personalize his/her password. When this step has been completed, the user will have access to the system. Network Passwords Following the recommendations of the JMU Department of Audit and Management Review, Network Services is implemeting a new password policy. This policy affects file server passwords, sometimes referred to as network passwords. JMU policy requires that file server passwords expire every 90 days. Network Services strongly suggests that you change your password immediatley upon notification that this expiration will occur. If you don't change your password on the three grace logins allotted, your account is locked. If you are locked out, you must contact the HelpDesk (as noted above in Forgotten or Expired Passwords).
