Using Graphing Questions in WileyPLUS
Introduction The Graphing question type in WileyPLUS uses Flash-based tools enabling students to draw and manipulate graphing objects, in order to answer a particular question. Graphing Objects are available in the left-side toolbar; Graphing Tools are available in the top toolbar; the Graphing Area is the main space containing the coordinate plane. Graphing Tools Graphing Objects Graphing Area
Graphing Objects Graphing Objects are represented by icons in the left-side toolbar hover over an icon with the mouse for more information. Some common Graphing Objects include Points Parabolas Lines Hyperbolas Line Segments Circles & Ellipses Rays Trigonometric Functions Vectors Special Functions (i.e., polynomials, etc.) Closed Polygons Complex Functions (i.e., rhodonea curves, Lissajous curves, etc.) Graphing Objects are made available based on the specific question; not all objects will be available for every question. To use Graphing Objects Click and hold the representative icon 2. Drag the object onto the Graphing Area 3. Release the mouse button to drop the object
Graphing Tools Graphing Tools are represented by icons in the top toolbar hover over an icon with the mouse for more information. Some common Graphing Tools include Selection: used to highlight and move objects around the Graphing Area Scale: used to resize and/or reflect highlighted objects in the Graphing Area Hand: used to move the graphing area view in the Zoom In state Zoom In: used to increase magnification of the Graphing Area and objects Zoom Out: used to decrease magnification of the Graphing Area and objects Actual Size: used to return the Graphing Area to the default viewing size (100% zoom-level) Delete: used to remove highlighted objects from the Graphing Area Clear: used to remove ALL objects from the Graphing Area Graphing Tools are made available based on the specific question and available Graphing Objects; all tools will not be available for every question, or for all objects within a single question. Graphing Tools may be present but inactive in some questions; inactive tools will display as greyed-out in the top toolbar. Some tools such as Scale and Delete may appear inactive and require that a Graphing Object is highlighted in order to activate. To highlight a Graphing Object that was previously dropped into the Graphing Area Use the Selection tool to click the object, but not on an ID point ID points are used for moving, not highlighting 2. Once highlighted a faint yellow outline will appear around the object * Note: Graphing Objects just dropped into the Graphing Area are highlighted by default.
Getting Started To begin, navigate to a graphing question and click the start button
Selecting & Placing Objects Graphing Objects can be identified by their descriptive icon, or by hovering the mouse over the particular object for more information. To use Graphing Objects Find the object(s) needed to answer the question in the left-side toolbar 2. Click and hold the representative icon 3. Drag the object onto the Graphing Area 4. Release the mouse button to drop the object * Note: All objects are not necessarily needed to answer a question some items are distracters intended to ensure the integrity of question content (by requiring true student analysis of the what is needed to answer correctly).
Positioning Objects Once an object has been dropped into the Graphing Area it will be highlighted for modification using the available Graphing Tools the Selection tool is active by default. Use the Selection tool to move the object into the proper position it is recommended to correctly place the object s origin before further modifying the object with the Scale tool. To move Graphing Objects with the Selection tool Click and hold the object and use the mouse to move into position; the mouse cursor will appear as a 2. Release the mouse button to drop the object into position If the highlighted object still needs further modification to be correct, click the Scale tool icon in the top toolbar remember, the Scale tool will only be active if the object itself is highlighted and the Scale tool is needed to answer the question.
Modifying Objects Once an object has been highlighted and the Scale tool icon is active in the top toolbar, it is ready to be resized and/or reflected. To modify highlighted Graphing Objects with the Scale tool Click the representative icon in the top toolbar, and observe any change in the icon this will provide useful information on using the Scale tool = move cursor vertically to resize = move cursor horizontally to resize = move cursor horizontally OR vertically to resize 2. Move the mouse cursor over the object, but not an ID point the cursor will appear as a 3. Click the object and hold the mouse button, then move the cursor accordingly to modify shape and/or size 4. Release the mouse button to stop resizing; repeat as needed
Tips for Selecting, Positioning, & Modifying Objects Tip #1: Some curve points will show the point coordinates upon mouse-over or moving with the default Selection tool this coordinate display can be very useful for positioning objects and answering questions correctly. Tip #2: In addition to the coordinate display, the Zoom In tool can be helpful when it is necessary to place points very precisely (especially in parts of the Graphing Area where there are multiple overlapping objects) Use the Zoom In tool to obtain a closer view of the Graphing Area; the default 100% view can always be restored by clicking the Actual Size button. Tip #3: The Graphing Area can be moved/scrolled while in the Zoom In view by using the Hand tool. Tip #3 Tip #2 Tip #1 Tip #4: Once the Scale tool is selected for an object, it will remain until the user manually changes to the Selection or Hand tools just hover over the object to re-engage the Scale tool. Similarly, the Selection tool can be re-engaged by clicking any ID point. Tip #5: If it is impossible to position or modify a Graphing Object to intersect certain points needed for the correct answer, it is very likely that the particular object is not part of the correct answer.
Finalizing & Submitting Answers Once you are satisfied with the placement, shape, and size of your object(s) and ready to submit an answer for evaluation by WileyPLUS, simply click the Submit Answer button at the bottom of the page. If your answer is correct you will see a subtle green outline around the Graphing Area, and the toolbars will be removed from view. If the submitted answer is incorrect or partially incorrect (i.e., some objects are correct, but not all), the incorrectly placed objects will be shown with a red outline if there are attempts remaining the object(s) can be modified and resubmitted for new evaluation. Correct Incorrect GOOD LUCK!
