If you install SonarWiz 7, please consider leaving SonarWiz 6 in place, for several reasons. The following slide was presented in our 7/24/2017 webinar "Introduction to SonarWiz 7", and it bears showing it again here: Rev 8, 9/2/2017 support@chesapeaketech.com Page 5

1.2.1 SonarWiz 6 Maintenance Phase Activity Plans For the remainder of 2017, SonarWiz 6 will be maintained, with the priority being fixes of important new issues which are discovered. With about 120 previous weeks of use, SonarWiz 6 is a mature product series version and had reached a plateau in issuediscovery. Not many new problem issues were being discovered per month. In contrast, SonarWiz 7 is in currently the rising portion of the log function describing the rate at which issues are discovered (and fixed) during a product life-cycle. We will be unlikely to add significant new features to SonarWiz 6 during this time though, as our newfeature addition, and repair efforts have started to focus on SonarWiz SonarWiz 7 - new features mean backward incompatibility Several new file changes in the internal design of SonarWiz 7 and its projects, make it important to note that you should not use both SonarWiz 6 and SonarWiz 7 to work on the same project. This is the reason to keep SonarWiz 6 in place on your PC when you install SonarWiz 7. You might continue production work, and maintain existing projects, using SonarWiz 6, but try SonarWiz 7 for a new project. We recommend getting some experience with SonarWiz 7 and testing its features to gain familiarity, before committing your product work to be done in SonarWiz 7. Details about project "promotion" when an existing project is opened by SonarWiz 7, are described later in this document Protecting yourself from inadvertent - oops - wrong version used Opening a SonarWiz project with the wrong version can cost you lost project work time, wo here are some suggestions on how to carefully avoid project work loss. Rev 8, 9/2/2017 support@chesapeaketech.com Page 6

(1) Try to avoid opening SonarWiz by clicking on an MML file. This will open the project for sure, and start SonarWiz, but if you have multiple versions of SonarWIz installed (e.g and ), it's hard to say which version of SonarWiz will be started by WINDOWS7 or WINDOWS10. You can avoid this possible trouble scenario by only starting SonarWiz yourself intentionally, by using the desktop SHORTCUTS this way: (2) Adjust your SonarWiz settings in both SonarWiz 6 and SonarWiz 7 to OPEN this checkbox, selecting to NOT open the previously in-use project: Rev 8, 9/2/2017 support@chesapeaketech.com Page 7

We have a checkbox like that, because users who stay with one version like SonarWIz 7 always, and want the efficiency of starting SOnarWiz and opening the prvious project, asked for this ability. You can force SonarWiz to present this screen when opening: Rev 8, 9/2/2017 support@chesapeaketech.com Page 8

... if you OPEN that checkbox. (3) Finally, we suggest labeling your SonarWiz project names to include the version of SonarWiz in which they are started (this is a SonarWiz 7 project) It's worth doing this to save possibly lost work by opening project Bathy_TampaBayBarges_6.05 with SonarWiz 7 (which would promote file formats and change it), or opening project Bathy_TampaBayBarges_7.00 with SonarWiz 6 (which will have side effects and change the MML file, with possible loss of work time) Making a Copy of the Project - Recommended Practice Since opening a project with SonarWiz 7 changes it, we recommend making a copy of the project folder first, then open a copy of the project in SonarWiz 7. That way you have a back-up option, of continuing to adjust the initial project using SonarWiz 6. In the project you have opened in SonarWiz 7, please consider it a one-way trip - you should not then revert to open the same project again in SonarWiz 6. Rev 8, 9/2/2017 support@chesapeaketech.com Page 9

1.3 SonarWiz 7 - Changes To See - Details In the next 2 major sections below, we will describe in more detail, what you will expect see in the way of GUI changes and new features. We give a summary both of what stays relatively the same, and what is completely new. 2 SonarWiz 6 -> SonarWiz 7 - Areas of Similarity You will see many familiar functions in SonarWiz 7, some almost identical to what you have been using in SonarWiz 6. Here are some SonarWiz 7 functional areas, which remain relatively similar to what you have been using in SonarWiz GUI Control Button Positions - Identical for familiar buttons Compare the GUI icons of the Top-level, Post-processing and MAP tool-bars, and you see the functional and positional similarity between SonarWiz 6 and SonarWiz 7: versus Though the new GUI button-graphics are different and more colorful, the functions and positions remain identical to what you have been using in SonarWiz 6. Hopefully you will find the new buttons easier to distinguish, remember, and use. 2.2 Create Project - Familiar Dialog When you create a project in SonarWiz 7, the dialog will appear identical to what you have been using in SonarWiz 6: Rev 8, 9/2/2017 support@chesapeaketech.com Page 10

2.3 Post-processing -> Import Importing data will seem quite familiar too, all identical except for the new single-beam data import option: Rev 8, 9/2/ Page 11

2.3.1 Single Beam Post-processing and Data-acquisition Single beam is a new licensing option, with a number of import formats, and real-time data acquisition options supported, in SonarWiz 7. Please read more about that totally new feature in SonarWiz 7, here: Sidescan Import - Similar Import - New Internal File Format Sidescan import appears identical in SonarWiz 7: but there is an important difference. The imported sidescan data retains a 32-bit floating-point resolution, is stored in a database format (not the older CSF files format), and is much easier to do! You no longer need to critically set gain, TVG, JSF scalar, and other settings to try and scale the sonar data into 8-bit CSF format. Just import the data without adjustment, then open a COLOR WINDOW, dock it on your map view, select the data type, color palette, scale to data, then adjust your color window Rev 8, 9/2/2017 support@chesapeaketech.com Page 12

histogram upper and lower limit bars to get the perfect initial image. You can adjust it more, but the initial good look is going to be much easier to render, than it was in SonarWiz 6. Because of this upgraded high-precision sidescan data format, your SonarWiz 7 sidescan projects are NOT BACKWARD COMPATIBLE with SonarWiz 6 - so plan on moving forward and doing all the post-processing of a SonarWiz 7 sidescan project, using SonarWiz User Guide Access - Same Place - NEW USER GUIDE Your most important and comprehensive information resource for SonarWiz 7 is again the User Guide, accessible from the same HELP -> User Manual buttons which you used to access the SonarWiz 6 User Guide: Rev 8, 9/2/2017 support@chesapeaketech.com Page 13

Open that up, use CTRL-F to open a "find" field, enter a keyword like "EGN", and go find some cool stuff about Empirical Gain Normalization, an excellent way to gainbalance your sidescan imagery - one of your best tools in sidescan post-processing Sub-bottom, Bathymetry, Magnetometry Import These import dialogs appear identical in SonarWiz 7. They carry over from SonarWiz 6.05 series, so the most recent advice documentation about sub-bottom and bathymetry import, for example, can be used for SonarWiz 7. Sub-bottom SonarWiz 6.05 / SonarWiz 7 advice: Rev 8, 9/2/2017 support@chesapeaketech.com Page 14

Newest QuickReference Guide many SonarWiz features summarized: November, Bathymetry User Guide: Note that for sub-bottom data, the new SonarWiz 6.05 advice for using PROPERTIES in the OPEN dialog carries forward: It is equally important to view, then set a DATA POLARITY choice, for sub-bottom import, in SonarWiz Bottom-Tracking Functions - Identical in SonarWiz Bottom-Tracking - Identical to SonarWiz 6 Sidescan bottom-tracking example, with separate port and starboard or sync options: Rev 8, 9/2/2017 support@chesapeaketech.com Page 15

Sub-bottom bottom-tracking example: In bottom-tracking, all the same functions are available, though in the new GUI colorscheme for the individual buttons SonarWiz 6 -> SonarWiz 7: Overall Similarity - Smooth Transition The remaining SonarWiz 6 functions with which users are familiar, carry over for the most part, into SonarWiz 7. It would be good to take a SonarWiz 6 project, make a copy with a different name like Project1 copied to Project1_7, then open it with SonarWiz 7, Rev 8, 9/2/2017 support@chesapeaketech.com Page 16

promote it into SonarWiz 7 format, and try it out. You should be able to do everything you used to be able to do in SonarWiz 6, do it more easily in SonarWiz 7, and do more. Please see Section 3 below for the newer features to expect, and to learn about functions in SonarWiz 7 which are not available in SonarWiz 6. Rev 8, 9/2/2017 support@chesapeaketech.com Page 17

3 SonarWiz 6 -> SonarWiz 7 - Exciting New Features The sections below describe features which are new and which are only found in SonarWiz SonarWiz 7 - Opening Screen - New Feature 1 From the very first screen you see when you run SonarWiz 7, you see a difference. To open your most recently used project, you can select that by clicking "Open Last Project". This new feature helps you select a project to open, so that you do not unintentionally open a SonarWiz 6 project, with SonarWiz 7. One important reason for this is that some data formats in SonarWiz 7 are not the same as in earlier versions of SonarWiz (SonarWiz 5 or 6), so a "promotion" of a project is necessary SonarWiz 7 - Opening Existing Projects - Sidescan File Promotion The dialog below will be presented to you the first time you open an older sidescan project (one created with SonarWiz 6, or SonarWiz 5), using SonarWiz 7. Rev 8, 9/2/2017 support@chesapeaketech.com Page 18

If you open a SonarWiz6 sidescan project, the 8-bit data format CSF files (imported already into the SonarWiz 6 project) need to be converted into the SonarWiz 7 internal format for sidescan, which is a 32-bit database format. When this needs to happen, you will first see an informative dialog, to give you the choice whether to proceed or not. Once you proceed, the project is converted into SonarWiz 7 format, and you should not try to open it again using SonarWiz 6, or SonarWiz Direct SonarWiz 7 import PREFERRED over promotion from SonarWiz 6 A second issue to note here, is that if you do an upgrade like this, the 8-bit data in the SonarWiz 6 SS CSF file is promoted to 32-bit floating-point format as-is, but it had already been filtered by the SonarWiz 6 import process. You are actually better off re-importing the SS data straight into a SonarWiz 7 project, rather than promoting a SonarWiz 6 SS project. You may have wanted to save work time by simple promotion, but to get the true 32-bit floating point quality in SonarWiz 7, direct import is better than promotion. 3.2 SonarWiz 7 New Feature - PROPERTIES Views One of the most striking new features you will see if the visible PROPERTIES dialog, docked by default at the lower-left side of your map-view GUI, beneath the Project Explorer. Rev 8, 9/2/2017 support@chesapeaketech.com Page 19

Properties view shows the properties of the project itself initially, unless you have selected a project item like a sonar file. This new function provides you with top-level visibility of data, which previously was hidden one-level-down in the "Configure Existing Project" dialog, which you would need to open by clicking on the wrench icon. Now you can see the same data by selecting the project name in the Project Explorer, here: Rev 8, 9/2/2017 support@chesapeaketech.com Page 20

3.3 Sonar File Properties - General, Gain, Acoustic File Selecting an acoustic file in Project Explorer, the new Properties, the new views and controls become evident. The general properties reveal information about the file status in the project, like whether it is being displayed or not, whether it has been bottom-tracked, its size, position, and coordinate limits. Rev 8, 9/2/2017 support@chesapeaketech.com Page 21

You can change these general settings right in the Properties dialog now, like disabling the view of the file in map view, by clearing the Properties check-box for that field: Rev 8, 9/2/ Page 22

3.3.1 SonarWiz 7 - Sonar File Properties - Gains Selecting the Properties -> Gains tab, you not only see the gain settings which have been applied to your file, but you can change them here too. Select your sonar file in the Project Explorer, and then select the GAIN tab in Properties, and you can see "Settings" view which had previously been a separate secondary dialog, in SonarWiz 6: Make changes right there in the GAINs properties, and the changes get applied to your sonar file in the project. Rev 8, 9/2/2017 support@chesapeaketech.com Page 23

3.3.2 SonarWiz 7 - Sonar File Properties - Acoustic File The "Acoustic File" properties are details of the numeric information about your file, such as: If you would like to see a wider version of these properties, the Properties dialog itself can be re-positioned by docking. Just drag the title-bar to a docking icon in the center of the map view like this: Rev 8, 9/2/2017 support@chesapeaketech.com Page 24

By re-docking to a wider section of the GUI, you can read the full source sonar filename, for example: Rev 8, 9/2/2017 support@chesapeaketech.com Page 25

3.4 SonarWiz 7 - New Feature - Integrated 3D Viewer Another dramatic new feature on SonarWiz 7 is the fully integrated CTI3DViewer. In SonarWiz 6 it was a separate utility which could be opened and managed. Now in SonarWiz 7 it's part of your main GUI and can be seen alongside the 2D map view of the same data, for easy comparison. To enable this option, select View -> Enable 3D View (checkbox): Rev 8, 9/2/2017 support@chesapeaketech.com Page 26

You can then dock the mini-dialog 3DViewer which becomes visible, and present it along-side 2D map view, like shown below: and present it within the main GUI as a view section. Rev 8, 9/2/2017 support@chesapeaketech.com Page 27

If your docked view area is too small: just drag the left-side border of the 3D view area towards the center of the map view area, to share 2D / 3D more equally Changing Display Settings - Integrated 3D Viewer Properties Dialog The settings control icon is the place to click, in the integrated 3D viewer, to modify say color-mapping to depth, in a bathymetry grid: Rev 8, 9/2/2017 support@chesapeaketech.com Page 28

If you'd like to see more red in the shallow areas (hazard!) then adjust the color mapping like this: (1) select the color icon (Rubik's cube) (2) choose color palette (3) select color by depth range and set numbers (4) select use available depth, then again color by depth range Rev 8, 9/2/ Page 29

Close the 3DViewer Properties dialog to see your results more fully. The integrated 3DVieer provides all the same depth-scaling and rotation options right on the screen, as the earlier versions of the independent 3DViewer: Rev 8, 9/2/ Page 30

3.5 SonarWiz 7-2D / 3D Real-time Display options For those of you with real-time features licensed on your SonarWiz license key, the integrated 3D viewer makes the screen just that much more organized, for real-time view management. In addition to the SonarWiz 6 3D-view options for bathymetry, the new integrated 3DViewer provides real-time sidescan and sub-bottom displays as well. Try these out to see if they add value to the 2D waterfall displays which were available in earlier SonarWiz versions Opening Integrated 3D Viewer for the First Time To bring in the 3D viewer for the first time, In the top area of the SonarWiz GUI, select View then ENABLE 3D VIEW to display 3D Integrated viewer, here: Rev 8, 9/2/2017 support@chesapeaketech.com Page 31

Then select to show the 3D view of your item in the PROPERTIES area: Rev 8, 9/2/ Page 32

When you click those two checkboxes, you will see a small-footprint 3DViewer show up, maybe at the left side of your screen: Left-click on the title-bar of that small 3D Viewer and hold the left-click and drag the viewer dialog to the center area of the 2D view area, and drag it to a DOCKING TAB - like the center-right or far-right one: Rev 8, 9/2/2017 support@chesapeaketech.com Page 33

The selected docking tab will illuminate the potential new footprint in dark grey-blue. Release the left-click and your viewer will fill the new docked area. Select its left side and drag it centrally to enlarge the 3D view: Rev 8, 9/2/ Page 34

NOTE: Color controls for the integrated 3D Viewer are applied from the COLOR WINDOW in your main GUI: Rev 8, 9/2/ Page 35

If the initial colors do not seem to match, just bring up the color window and select the same datatype as the data in your 3DView and it will be applied. Then adjust other 3D display settings here: Rev 8, 9/2/ Page 36

Many of your familiar 3D Viewer features from SonarWiz 6 will then become apparent. 3.6 SonarWiz 7 - Availability of SonarWiz 6 User-defined Coordinate Systems SonarWiz 7 will not automatically port your SonarWiz 6 user-defined coordinate systems over to SonarWiz 7. The geodesy database portion of the installation is separate for SonarWiz 6 and SonarWiz 7, and when you install a user-defined coordinate system on one PC, it is limited to the version in which you installed it. You can run SonarWiz 6 and capture a screenshot of your user-defined coordinate systems first to get started. SonarWiz 6 Tools -> Geodesy Utility will use this version: Rev 8, 9/2/2017 support@chesapeaketech.com Page 37

Then run SonarWiz 7, and the Geodesy Utility, to import those user-defined coordinate systems which you will need in any SonarWiz 7 projects. SonarWiz 7 (current release and later, ) Tools -> Geodesy Utility will show: None of the user-defined coordinate systems you had in SonarWiz 6 will initially show up (or be available for use) in SonarWiz 7. Rev 8, 9/2/2017 support@chesapeaketech.com Page 38

To use any user-defined coordinate systems, please IMPORT them again on your current PC in SonarWiz 7. Just go through the same manual import process of using Tools -> CTIGeodesyTools, then use IMPORT to bring in any GXP files which you are sure you need to use in SonarWiz 7. Access the CTIGeodesyTool this way, and confirm that you are using the version (or later) of the CTIGeodesyTool: Look for the CTIGeodesyTools version (earlier SonarWiz versions and will not have this feature, you have to use SonarWiz or later): Rev 8, 9/2/ Page 39

Then access the User Guide: Rev 8, 9/2/ Page 40

Then see section 2 in the Geodesy Tool User Guide PDF (due to be updated to SonarWiz 7 version), Example 1, for user-defined coordinate system import: More explanatory text follows there, about the IMPORT process. 3.7 SonarWiz 7 - New Advanced Color Window Options The Color Window and Histogram controls carried over fully, from SonarWiz 6 into SonarWiz 7, but there are a few new features too: Rev 8, 9/2/2017 support@chesapeaketech.com Page 41

In addition to the same mode of operation as SonarWiz 6, where you manually adjust all settings: in SonarWiz 7, there is also now: 1) AUTO SCALE and SCALE TO BEST options. Check Auto Scale, and SonarWiz 7 will make the color-palette-to-data-values assignment and scale the data according to its own judgments: Rev 8, 9/2/2017 support@chesapeaketech.com Page 42

When you select to AUTO SCALE, you will lose the ability to adjust the COLOR WINDOW using the SCALE TO DATA, and SCALE TO BEST buttons, and the histogram limit bars will be grayed out so that you cannot manually adjust them. To regain all the controls, just UNCHECK the AUTO SCALE checkbox of the COLOR WINDOW. (2) another new feature is ZOOM + and - where you can expand a small-footprint histogram area to see if better: Rev 8, 9/2/2017 support@chesapeaketech.com Page 43

The ZOOM + control button can expand this for visibility and better control: Rev 8, 9/2/2017 support@chesapeaketech.com Page 44

4 Document Versions Rev 8, 9/2/ New section , explaining about this new feature set. Rev 7, 8/18/ Single-beam section added, explaining about this new feature set. Rev 6, 7/24/ New section about migrating from SonarWiz 6 to SonarWiz 7 added, after the excellent review of this topic in our 7/24/2017 Introduction to SonarWiz 7 Webinar. Rev 5, 7/7/2017Clarified the user-defined coordinate systems issue after the release of SonarWiz ; Added information about using the integrated 3D viewer for the first time. Rev 4, 7/5/2017 Revised to add section 3.6 so that users with user-defined coordinate systems in their coordinate-system database understand that they should manually add these to SonarWiz 7 geodesy database, using the TOOLS -> CTIGeodesyTool option; Also section 3.7 added to explain new COLOR WINDOW options like AUTO SCALE. Rev 3, 7/3/2017 Revised so that the new 7/1/2017 release of SonarWiz is described, as it has not been released! Rev 2, 6/7/2017 New section explains how direct import of SS data into SonarWiz 7 may be better for your data representation, than using a promoted SonarWiz 6 project by opening it in SonarWiz 7 Rev 1, 4/13/2017 Initial release describing main upgrade benefits to SonarWiz 7 Rev 8, 9/2/2017 support@chesapeaketech.com Page 45
