NAME: DATE: Features of the Seafloor Google Earth Tour Project (15 points) What are the highest and lowest places on Earth? If you named Mt. Everest and the Grand Canyon, you are incorrect! The tallest mountains and deepest canyons are actually found in the ocean! How do we know so much about the ocean? What features are on the ocean floor? What processes have shaped the ocean floor? We will find out during the next few class periods! People have explored the ocean for thousands of years. Once scientists were able to map the ocean floor (you will be doing this soon!) they discovered something surprising. The bottom of the ocean was not a flat, sandy plain stretch between continents. In fact, the ocean floor was rocky and dramatically uneven. You will be creating a Google Earth tour for a specific feature of the seafloor. It is easy to create your own Tour in Google Earth. You and your partners will be creating a tour by setting a series of markers called placemarks. It is important to make sure this tour has information on the feature that is accurate since you will be responsible for taking/giving notes on this information. Your tour is worth 15 points and should include: A minimum of five placemarks of your seafloor feature around the world (2 points each) Within each placemark you must include: o A picture of either the feature or the location of the feature (if not visible) o 2-3 sentences about each feature and why it is important to know. Your tour must be saved as a self-contained file so that any individual could download and load it on their personal computer. (3 points) You and your partner(s) will present your tour to your classmates. (2 points) The features we will be studying are: Abyssal Hill/Abyssal Plain Guyot Atoll Mid-Ocean Ridges/Rift Valley Bay Seamount Continental Shelf/Continental Slope Trench Volcanic Island Arc The following pages contain useful information on how to create a tour in Google Earth. DUE DATE:
Buggé: Google Earth Tour Project Part I: How do we create Placemarks in Google Earth? In Google Earth, a placemark is a symbol that marks a location. The default placemark symbol is a pushpin with a text label. The Add Placemark tool lets you create and annotate your own placemarks on the map. 1. Fly to your house. 2. When you are satisfied with the view (you can zoom in, zoom out, tilt the terrain, etc) click on the Add Placemark button in the toolbar and a window will pop up. Name your placemark whatever you want (eg. My House ). 3. If you want to change the placemark symbol, click on the yellow pushpin next to the Name. This opens the Icon window. A window with choices will appear. Select the icon you want and click ok.
Buggé: Google Earth Tour Project 4. Now that your placemark has an icon and a title, enter a description. In addition, you can add in a picture, video, or website from the internet. CODE for Text and Pictures You can include images in your description using the IMG HTML tag to refer to either: Images stored on your computer's hard drive (e.g., <img src="c:\documents and Settings\HP\My Documents\Pictures\myDescriptiveImage.jpg">) Images on the internet (e.g. <img src=" When you the placemark to another person, local images are included.
5. Test the new placemark by going to a different location. Then, double-click the placemark to see if it takes you back to the right spot and view. Click on the placemark icon to open the description balloon. If the description balloon covers up too much of the view, zoom out just a bit more so you can see the context of the scene. 6. If you want to go back and revise the placemark, right click on the location in places and go to Get Info. This will bring you back to the placemark window.
Part II: How can Placemarks take us on a tour of Seafloor features? **Research your seafloor feature online, and create a series of placemarks (minimum 5) using the steps outlined above for your specific seafloor feature. Don t forget to include pictures and text! 1. Before beginning, choose Add>Folder to create a new folder in the Places panel for your tour. All placemarks must be placed in the same folder in order for them to play as a tour. 2. Enter a name and description for the tour folder and click OK. 2. Drag the placemarks into the tour folder you created. You can either add them in the order you want to visit them, or drag the links up and down in the folder to change their order. You can change the order of the placemarks at any time.
Saving your Placemarks **This step is VERY IMPORTANT as we are using the school server.** 1. Before you exit Google Earth, Right Click on your tour folder and select Save Place As. 2. This will bring up a window. Let the file name itself and make sure you save it in our share folder. NOTE: if you do not save your file in this way, it will not be on the computer the next day and you will have to restart your entire project Playing your Tour 1. Select the tour folder in the Places panel and click the Play Tour button in the lower right corner of the Places panel. 2. A tour controller will appear in the lower left corner of the 3D Viewer window and your tour will start automatically. 3. By going to Google Earth Preferences, you can change the timing of the tour 4. To save your tour, click the disc icon in the tour controller. 5. To delete your tour without saving it, close the tour controller *For information on making a Google Earth tour:
