4 2.1 Basic Concepts Definitions and descriptions David-Link Biometric functions User Enrollment User Verification User ID Numbers Authority (Status) Levels The two most important David-Link Biometrics functions are user enrollment and user verification User Enrollment Enrollment is the process of creating a User Enroll ID number by scanning the personnel s finger three times to create a template. During user verification process, the stored template is compared to the entered fingerprint scan to confirm user identity User Verification Verification occurs when a user enters an ID number, scans a finger in the fingerprint sensor or inputs the personal password for comparison with the stored template User ID Numbers 1 Before commencing fingerprint enrollment, a new user must be assigned a User ID Number by the enroller. This ID number is tagged to the fingerprint template. ID numbers are inputted via the keypad Authority (status) Levels David-Link Biometric has two status levels: Users are personnel whose identity must be verified to gain access to a facility or to have their attendance recorded. They do not have access to the menu settings functions. Managers have access to all functions and setup options in the system. Note: Without Manager status personnel enrolled in the system, the Users are capable of enrolling them. 2

18 8. Table: Enrolled unsuccessful or poor quality fingerprint 15 Dry or dirty fingerprints Too light applied pressure on sensor How to select finger for scan How to place the finger on sensor Effects of fingerprint change from wear or damage Others Dirty and dry fingers can impair the verification process of the device. If the finger to be scanned is dry, moisten with water. The user should place the finger firmly and squarely on the sensor surface. Left or right index or middle finger is recommended for recording. Use fingerprints of good quality, without wear or wound. Usually, the user may select the forefinger, but if print is of poor quality, it is recommended that the middle finger or ring finger be used. Place your finger firmly on the sensor, surface covered must be over 2/3. The fingerprint is applied on the center of the sensor s surface. Do not touch the sensor too fast. Do not move the finger on the sensor surface when applied. For users with worn or damaged fingers, the identification process can be adversely affected. If fingerprint quality is poor, password verification should be selected. It is, however, a rare occurrence that an individual s fingerprint quality is so poor that the device would fail to match it
