1 LAKE TOWNSEND YACHT CLUB FILE TRANSFER PROTOCOL (LTYC-FTP) USER INSTRUCTIONS (February 3, 2012) There is a password protected FTP folder on our website which may be used to share files with others who have access. You may upload files to and download files from there and it s the best place, for example, to put your photos of events so our newsletter editor can access them. One of the obstacles to using this folder has been that many do not have and are not familiar with FTP programs. To that end I ve found a good one which is free, easy to use and quick to download and install - Coffee Cup Free FTP. Be sure to read the User Agreement on the last page of the this document, INSTALLATION Here is a step by step illustration of the install and how to setup the connection to our FTP folder. 3 Optionally, sign up for newsletter. Or, just click Close button. Note: This popup may be hidden behind other windows. If so, minimize other windows until you see it. Click the Run button L a k e T o w n s e n d Y a c h t C l u b Page 3

6 Leave the checkbox checked and click Finish to run the FTP program Note: The install puts a shortcut on your desktop that you can click to run. You will also find it on your Start/Program list of installed programs as well. Note: this is the initial screen. The functions in the bottom window frame only work with the non-free version. This free version is not for opening or previewing files while in the FTP program. You can do that by downloading to your PC. So, close the bottom frame since you won t need it. 8 Make a Connection and Transfer Files Note: Files shown in the left frame are the ones on your PC. The right side frame will show remote files after you setup a connection to a web host. Setup a connection to our LTYC FTP folder You will need three pieces of information to setup the connection. 9 On this window click the little green plus button Note: This window will display Enter the following values in the textboxes: Nickname: LTYC-FTP (may be any name you prefer though) Server: ftp://laketownsendyach.ipower.com Username: ltycftp L a k e T o w n s e n d Y a c h t C l u b Page 9

10 Click the Connect button. Main screen now shows and right side contains folder and files To transfer a folder or file to the LTYC-FTP folder. On the LTYC-FTP side, you may create your own folder to keep things in by clicking the New Folder button. You may want to keep some things under your named folder. Or, for other folders of events the preferred naming convention is date of event-event name (for example Workday). You may just name the folder that is on your PC before doing the upload. To create a new folder or sub-folder, click on the New Folder icon. L a k e T o w n s e n d Y a c h t C l u b Page 10

11 Enter your folder name (ex. UweNancy) To open any folder, double-click on it. L a k e T o w n s e n d Y a c h t C l u b Page 11

12 To upload a folder or file (example: test.txt) to LTYC-FTP, double-click it or drag it to the right-side pane. To download any LTYC-FTP folder or file to your computer just double-click it on the right side or drag it to your PC on the left side. Note: While the transfer is taking place an animated blue bar is displayed at the bottom of the screen. A Transfer Activity window may have opened earlier. It may be closed at any time and is only used for monitoring transfer progress. When you are finished using the program, click the big yellow Disconnect icon to close the connection before closing the application. L a k e T o w n s e n d Y a c h t C l u b Page 12

13 FTP User Agreement Using the LTYC-FTP folder to transfer files means that you agree to abide by the following conditions. The LTYC-FTP folder is intended to be used as a temporary storage space only. Do not use it as the only place to keep your files or to do backups of your local files. The Webmaster may delete anything and everything from that folder if deemed necessary and may not notify you beforehand. Delete your content when you think it s no longer useful to have it there. Do not delete or modify content or folders that you did not place there. Do not upload inappropriate content or anything involving politics or religion. Content should be images, graphics, text or document files only. Be aware that video files may be very large. Do not upload any programs, executables, command or script files. Any content in this folder may be viewed and downloaded by any other users who log in to the folder. L a k e T o w n s e n d Y a c h t C l u b Page 13
