1 WWF CMS Map Tool User Guide July 2007 In the latest (1.7) release of the WWF Content Management System (CMS) a dynamic map creation tool is available in all CMS instances. Examples of maps created with the tool can be found at: _stories/index.cfm ic_proof/ipcc_report/index.cfm Creating a new map To create a map in the CMS go to: Databases > Dynamic Map Tool > Add new map

2 A new screen will appear where you enter some basic information about the map: Name the internal name you use to identify the map within the CMS Description internal description of the map Basic map source which basic map you want to use. Currently 2 types of map are available: Blue map which shows country borders and names when zoomed in Satellite picture (NASA) map does not show country borders and names Click Save and more map options will appear Map Behaviour This determines how the map initially appears. Use the zoom control to set the default zoom level:

3 Tick Show minimap to display the small map preview: Tick Enable zoom to turn the zoom control on/off on the live version of the map Change the Icon switch at zoom factor to determine when the map switches between different icon sizes The CMS map supports 2 icon sizes so a different sized icon can appear at a specific zoom level. See the following map for an example: _stories/index.cfm Available icons This shows which icons can be used on the map (icons are placed on the map itself via the Graphic objects tab see below) To add a new icon the icon files must first be uploaded via the Icon menu (see Adding new icons below) Graphic objects This shows the icons and shapes that have been added to the map:

4 For instructions on adding icons and shapes please see below Theme This feature is not currently used Preview map You can preview your map at any time by click on the preview map option in the top right

5 Adding icons to a map 1. Adding an icon file Before you can add an icon to a map you must first upload the icon to the system. To upload a new icon file go to Databases > Dynamic Map Tool > Icons > Add new icon In the next screen you should enter: Name - name of the icon (for internal use) Description - description of the icon (for internal use) Icon file use the Browse button to locate the icon file on your computer. Acceptable icon file formats are: JPG, GIF, SWF, PNG Zoom level specify at what zoom level the icon will appear. The 2 zoom levels are: 1. Level initial view

Level shown at custom zoom level (as determined by the default zoom level set under the map behaviour tap see above) PLEASE NOTE: Once an icon has been created and added to a map it CANNOT be deleted from the icon menu until it has been removed from any maps on which it has been placed. 2. Making an icon available to a map Once an icon file has been uploaded, you need to link it to a particular map. Go to Databases > Dynamic Map Tool and select the map you wish to link the icons to. Then click on the Available icons tab. To link an icon to the map you need to enter: Name name of the icon (for internal use) 1. Icon which icon file will appear at zoom level 1 2. Icon which icon file will appear at zoom level 2 Description description of the icon (for internal use) Click Save and your icon will appear below. This icon is now ready to be physically placed on your map. 3. Placing the icon on the map Click on the Graphic Objects tab and click add icon

7 A pop up window will appear showing the map. Enter the following information: Available icons choose which icon you want to display Name the name of the icon, which will be publicly displayed Summary a short (approximately 30 characters) summary for the icon, which will be publicly displayed This will appear on the live map as:

8 If you want the icon to be clickable (and take the user to another page or website) tick the Clickable tick box and enter the URL of the page you want the icon to link to. You must enter the full live URL of your page. NavIDs will not work. Next select the pen tool in the grey box beneath the map (Please note that the border and fill controls etc. do not work for icons and are relevant for shapes only see below) Using your mouse you can now place and move the icon on the map itself. Once you are happy with your icon s position click Save. Your icon will now appear listed under the Graphic Objects tab on the main screen.

9 Adding a shape to a map In addition to icons you can add graphical shapes to a map. Click on the Graphic Objects tab and click add shape The same map pop up window will appear as when you add an icon. Enter the following information: Name the name of the icon, which will be publicly displayed Summary a short (approximately 30 characters) summary for the icon, which will be publicly displayed If you want the icon to be clickable (and take the user to another page or website) tick the Clickable tick box and enter the URL of the page you want the icon to link to. As with icons NavIDs will not work, so a full URL must be entered.

10 Click on the pen tool and you can then add anchor points to the map above Shapes are currently limited to 10 anchor points. You can also use the other editing controls to adjust your shape: Border thickness, alpha (transparency) and colour Fill alpha and colour You can also remove an anchor point (removes the last anchor point you added), close the shape (makes the lines you added into a closed object) and clear the shape (removes the whole shape). Open shape Closed shape If you wish to further modify your shape you can use the hand tool to drag the centre point between 2 anchor points to create a curved effect.

11 Once you are happy with your shape click Save. The Shape will now appear listed under the Graphic Objects tab on the main screen. Adding a map to a page Once you have finished creating your map you can add it to a page in CMS. In your page add a new container. In the resulting pop up window select Flash Map A second tab called Select Map will appear. In the drop down menu select the map you created and click Save

12 The map will then appear in your page. Troubleshooting Please note that the map tool is under constant development and therefore you may experience some minor issues. If you have problems with the map first try and empty your browser s cache. This should solve most issues.
