Overview The administrator menu enables setting up further detailed functions. The access to the menu is limited by pass code. Accessing administrator menu DATA Splice Data USB Function Login Menu Maintenance Information 2011/01/01 00:00 Security 1: Touch Login icon ( ) on the menu screen Login Pass Code Input Number Input Pass Code screen Pass code: OK 2: 0000 is shown from the beginning. Touch OK. DATA Splice Data USB Function Login Menu Maintenance Information 2011/01/01 00:00 Security 3: The menu screen is displayed again when the pass code is accepted. 4: In administrator menu, you can change extra items of splice programs and heating programs as described next few pages what are not appeared in normal menu. About changing items, please refer to page 4-6 of operation manual. Tips Once you enter the Pass Code, you can access the administrator menu without re-entry of the Pass Code unless you turn off the power. If you turn off the power and turn it on again, the operator menu is displayed. 1
Administrator menu details Page Splice program items in administrator menu 1/5 <Fusion Time> Fusion time is the duration of arc discharge. (Numerical input) <Prefusion Time> Pre-fusion time is the time in seconds the fiber ends wait after the arc discharge begins before beginning the overlap (feed). (Numerical input) <Arc Gap> Arc gap is the distance between the left and right fibers before fusion takes place. (Numerical input) <Over Lap> Overlap is the amount of overlap between the left and right fibers that occurs when the right fiber is fed forward during the arc fusion. (Numerical input) 2/5 <Arc Power> Expressed in a unit-less step value as [Standard +XX]. Arc power controls the amount of heat the fibers are exposed to during the fusion arc. As the power is automatically set after an arc test and compensated at every splices, normally an operator does not need to change it manually. Standard means compensated arc power of the splice program, and added value can be manually set by operator. (Numerical input) <Staying Time> Staying time is the duration from the end of overlap to the beginning of pulling. Only for Fiber pulling splice. (Numerical input) <Fiber Pulling> Fiber pulling is the amount of pulling the fiber back after overlap. (Numerical input) <Arc Center> Arc center is the position of the arc center. Usually it is set automatically by the splicer. (Numerical input) Go on to the next page. 2
3/5 <Splice Select> Select the splice mode from Automatic, Manual and Quick. (Icon selection) Automatic APDS is used and automatic splice is performed. Manual Splice is performed by manual operation with key pad. Quick APDS is not performed. Inspections are simplified and automatic splice is performed. <Align Method> Select the fiber aligning method from Core, Diameter, AIAS, ATTN and Adaptive. (Icon selection) Core Aligns the left and right fibers by the center of their cores. Diameter Aligns the left and right fibers by their outer diameters. AIAS Signifies Automatic Intentional Axis Shift. High core-cladding eccentricities have an effect on surface tension during arc, yielding high splice loss. This method is used to intentionally offset the left and right fiber centers in order to minimize this effect. Note: If AIAS is selected, arc parameters cannot be changed. ATTN Signifies Attenuation. Fibers are spliced by shifting the centers of the left and right fiber cores to achieve intentional high splice losses. Before ATTN splice, set the target attenuation (splice loss) and the adjustment factor. Change the adjustment factor so that a yielded splice loss matches the target attenuation.. Adaptive is the alignment method mainly for BIF. It is used in splicing optical fiber with complicated core profiles. <Est. Loss Limit> If the higher estimated splice loss than this value is measured, the splicer warns on the screen. (Numerical input) <Clv. Angle Limit> If the larger cleave angle than this value is measured, the splicer warns on the screen. (Numerical input) 4/5 <HDCM> Monitors and inspects fiber core with high precision. You can select ON or OFF. Normally ON is desirable. OFF is set for specialty fiber splicing. (Icon selection) <Splice ID Name> Each splice condition name can be changed from the initial factory setting to a name that is more meaningful to the user. Please refer to page 7 regarding how to change the splice ID name. (Text input) <Fiber Detection> Automatic fiber detection function. ON/OFF (Icon selection) Please refer to page 8. 5/5 <Arc image Compensation> This function compensates arc power to an optimum level for the arc condition. Set "Arc Environment Compensation" to ON to enable this function. (Icon selection) <Arc Environment Compensation> This function compensates arc power to an optimum level for the environmental condition. (Icon selection) 3
Page 1/2 2/2 Heater Program items in administrator menu <Heat Up Temp. A> Heating element rise up to the set temperature in the first term of heating cycle. (Numerical input) <Heating Duration A> Duration of the first term of heating cycle. (Numerical input) <Heat Up Temp. B> Heating element rise up to the set temperature in the middle term of heating cycle. (Numerical input) <Heating Duration B> Duration of the middle term of heating cycle. (Numerical input) <Heat Finish Temp> The temperature of finishing heating cycle after cooling by the fan. (Numerical input) <Sleeve ID Name> Change the protection sleeve. (Text input) <Heat ID Name> Change the heater program s name. (Text input) 4

Analyzing fiber type APDS: Auto fiber profiling check and Detection System The splicer automatically analyzes optical fiber type to be spliced from fiber image, compares the analyzed splice program to the selected splice program and displays the result on a screen. This system prevents splice program and fiber type from being miss-selected. When the analyzed fiber type is different from the set fiber type, the result screen appears and the splicer stops. Fiber types that can be analyzed are typically SMF, MMF, DSF/NZDS and BIF. The right and left fibers are analyzed individually. If a fiber profile cannot be identified, the splicer displays OTHER. Note: The TYPE-81C fusion splicer stores the profiling information of representative fiber types. Therefore the splicer could make miss-analysis on a different manufacturer s or new fiber types. With regard to profiling data customization and the modification of fiber types, contact our maintenance service center or sales personnel. Reset Fiber Detection Reset Fiber Detection Splicer recommends the change of splice Go on Next (ARC TEST) 1/2 program and starts the ARC TEST [ SMF ] -> [ MMF ] 2/2 Go on SMF Next Quick (SPLICE) SMF Override Quick 003 Fiber Detection Result L:MMF R:MMF Go on Next (ARC TEST) Change the splice program and perform an arc test. Registration of splice program Not all splice programs are registered in the initial factory settings. If you would like to use some other splice programs, you can register in the Administrator menu. Tips The background of the splice program that is registered is shown in blue and highlighted in green when selected. The background of the splice program that is NOT registered is shown in black and the text is highlighted in red when selected. 8
