10 LESSON ACTIVITIES - EXPLANATION Apples Math Science Literacy Other Counting Apples - Apple Exploration - Cut Apple Names - Write Field Trip - Take a trip to Count apples, then sort open an apple and the letters in the child s a local farm or orchard them by color and/or size. Graph with apple prints and glass jewels. Apple Number Cards - Sort, count, and match numbers using these printable apple cards. Oxidation Experiment - Brainstorm liquids that might help prevent apples from turning brown. Predict and set up an experiment and observe what happens. Apple Decomposition - Set out to observe how long it takes an apple to decompose. Set out a whole apple, an apple cut in half, and an apple cut into many pieces. Record observations in a journal. Label an Apple - Slice an apple in half. Observe each half and draw a picture. Label markers to trace over the letters. Apple Words - Brainstorm a list of words related to apples. Use those words in journal writing and stories. Apple Emergent Reader - Print out this easy reader and children can be illustrators. So many early literacy concepts can be explored at this time. Sensory Writing Tray - Place oats in a tray with a dusting of cinnamon. Add cinnamon sticks to use as a writing tool. Practice letter writing and mark-making. Tissue Paper Art - Create tissue paper apple tree art Cooking - Research apple recipes and cook one together. Crockpot applesauce is a great place to start. Bobbing for Apples - Use decorative apples for this fine motor sensory activity. Spicy Apple Art - Add cinnamon to paint to make this scented apple art. each part of the apple. 11 INDEPENDENT ACTIVITIES Apples These activities would work well as centers or work boxes during free play time. They re meant to allow children the chance to play, explore, and practice preschool skills on their own. Children may still need some assistance at times, of course. They re broken down by subject area for reference. (TF) =Toddler-Friendly Math Literacy Science Apple Numbers - Place apple numbers on a tray. Use applecolored glass gems or tiny apples to count and match with the numbers. Apple Pompoms - Set out red, yellow, and green pompoms. Use tongs or fingers to sort the pompoms and create patterns. Apple Emergent Reader - Allow the children time to read (and reread) the apple book they made this week. Apple Name Activity - Thread the worm through apple letters in the correct order to create name. Observation Journal - Observe the science experiments throughout the week. Write and draw about any changes that are noticed. Apple life cycle Print out pictures of the apple life cycle. Children can make observations and order the life cycle. Sensory Block Play Arts and Crafts Apple Play Dough Invitation - Make red play dough and add a few accessories for the children to use. (TF) Apple Cinnamon Sensory Bin - Add some simple household ingredients to create the base of this sensory bin. Build Apples - Use LEGO bricks to create apples and apple trees. Apple stacking Use an extra set of the printable apple numbers. Laminate those numbers and tape them to wooden blocks. Children can stack the blocks in numerical order, experiment to see how high they can stack the blocks, build creations using all the numbers, etc. Button Apple Tree - Set out buttons, cinnamon sticks, and felt. Read the pages with the children. Then go through each page and add the correct amount of apples on each page. 48 Print out the cards. Cut them apart and use them to explore the apple life cycle. Here are a few suggestions Laminate the cards and retell how apple trees are grown and produce fruit. Work together to write about the life cycle. Use the cards as illustrations for the writing. Print out two versions. Leave one intact. Cut apart the other one. Children can match the cards to the intact mat.
