Introduction to CaseViewer The JAVS CaseViewer application will provide the end user the ability to view case media along with case event logs, case notes and play list files. CaseViewer will also allow the user to mute or adjust individual microphone levels, set mark in and mark out times for saving segments of a case and give foot pedal control for the transcribing process. CaseViewer has controls for play, pause, stop and go to index as well as seek capabilities and motion control. CaseViewer will have the ability to run in multiple instances and connect to different locations from the same computer, and will be able to open multiple file types based on Windows Media Player default file types. CaseViewer will allow the transcriber to control the media files via JAVS foot pedal controllers, with reverse, forward and play functions and has a programmable automatic backstep function when the play pedal is released. With JAVS CaseViewer you can: View case media files from the JAVS AutoLog Find Case function. Open JAVS CVL files published from JAVS AutoLog or CaseScheduler. Mark in and Mark out segments of a case and save them to a CVL file. Use the JAVS foot pedal controllers for the transcribing process. 4

Interface at a Glance JAVS CaseViewer interface is divided into 5 functional windows; Case Log: Displays the case log for the selected case with time stamps for each event. Clicking on any of the events will cause the viewer to play back from that time stamp of the recorded media file. Event Notes: Displays the case notes, public and private, which relate to each event in the log. Audio: Playlist: Video: Displays the 5 channel audio playback in VU meter style. Mute and level adjustments for each channel are available. Displays the sequence and duration of each media file associated to the case log that will be played. Displays the video media file that is currently being played. Controls such as Play, Stop, Pause, Skip, Seek and motion controls are available for media manipulation. 5

Understanding the Interface Case Log Display: The Case Log is created in JAVS AutoLog during a court proceeding. These events are placed in the log based on the time of day it occurred. When the case is opened in CaseViewer, these log events will be displayed in the Case Log display. There are two columns in the Case Log Display; Time and Event Text. The Time column will display the time at which the log event was entered and the Event Text column will display the proceeding that was entered at that particular time. Any event text that is highlighted and underlined is a link to the media file currently loaded. Clicking on the link will set the media to play at that specific time. The up and down arrows will select the next or previous log event. Event Notes: The Event Notes window will display any notes that are associated with the current log event. Because the note is associated with a particular event, that note will have the same time stamp as the event and will follow the media as does the case log. 6

Playlist: The Playlist window will display all the media files associated with that case or that day s case. Each media file is created when a case is recessed or stopped or Public or Private modes are activated. For Example: If a case is recessed 3 times within a proceeding, then there will be 4 media files associated with that case and will be displayed in the Playlist. Each file in the Playlist will display a start time, based on the time stamping of JAVS AutoLog, the order in which the files will be played and a duration of that file. The media file that is currently playing in the viewer will be highlighted in the Playlist. Double clicking on any file in the Playlist will cause the Case Log and the media file to go to that time of day and begin playing. Video: The Video display window will display the current video file in play. The interface includes controls for Play, Pause, Fast Forward and Rewind. Below the video display are two seek bars, a single file seek bar and a Case Timeline. The single file seek bar will begin and end at the start and completion of each file in the Playlist. The Case Timeline will begin and end at the start and completion of the Playlist. The Case Timeline has triangular tic marks to indicate the end of each file in the Playlist. Pressing the skip forward and skip backward buttons will take the media to each individual file in the Playlist. 7

There are also Mark In and Mark Out buttons, which will allow the user to select individual segments for export to another file by using the Save button. Above the video display is a Playback Speed slider bar which will allow the media to be increased up to two times play speed or decreased down to half speed. The player will automatically adjust the pitch of the audio for audible discernment during Playback speed control. Backstep: The Backstep function is a user configurable setting, from 0 seconds to 10 seconds, used by the transcriber. When using the JAVS foot pedal control, this setting is the amount of time, in seconds; the media will back-up, when the play pedal is released. File Searching: CaseViewer has two types of search functions, Current File Search and All File Search. The Current File Search will allow the user to search the current file playing based on the files duration. The All File Search will allow the user to search the entire case s files by time and date. Current File Search button All File Search button Example of Current File Search: Each file in the Playlist has a duration associated with it, pressing the Current File Search button will allow the user to search for a particular point within that duration. File 2 in the playlist has a duration of 3:28 and is the current file playing, indicated by the highlight in the list. When the Current File Search button is pressed a Move to Time dialog window will open. In this example, the Select field will be set to 2:03. When the Select button is pressed the media file will advance to 2 minutes and 3 seconds into file 2 in the Playlist. 8

Example of All File Search: Each case is comprised of one or more files and can span one or more days. The Search All Files function will allow the user to search the case for specific dates and times the case was recorded. Pressing the All File Search button will open the Play from date and time dialog window. Pressing the pull-down arrow will reveal a calendar for date selection. Once a date is selected, a time can then be typed in or use the up and down arrows to increment or decrement the time. Press the Play button and CaseViewer will locate the file for that date and time and begin to play from that point. 9

Audio The Audio window displays the recorded levels from either the 5 track recording or the stereo recording. You can listen to individual tracks or a combination of tracks by using the mute buttons at the bottom of each slider. You can also adjust the track volume by pushing the slider up or down to the appropriate level for listening convenience. There is also an overall volume slider control in the video display window which contains an overall volume control and an overall mute button. 10

CaseViewer Operation CaseViewer can be used to view single media files or a playlist of media files associated with JAVS AutoLog log files (CVL files). CVL files are created when a case is published from JAVS AutoLog or CaseScheduler. These files include the log events from a case and any notes associated with those events. When files are published, they can exist on CD, DVD or a network folder. Below is an example of the file structure for a published case (case 001) that exists in a network share folder (Published). Within the folder, a case folder is created for case 001. Inside that folder, a folder structure is created starting with the year (2006) then the months (5), (8) and finally the days (1), (26). Also within the published folder is a 001.cvl file, which is the entire case file that was published. This file will contain the information for case 001 which was recorded on May 1, 2006 and August 28, In each day folder that the case was recorded, a CVL file for that day will also be created for that day only. With CaseViewer you can view the entire case or just an individual day. To view a case log 1. Double click on the CaseViewer Icon on your desktop. CaseViewer will open. 2. Select File>Open Case Log and locate the CVL file for the case you wish to view and press Open. The case will be designated by the case number followed by.cvl. 11

3. CaseViewer will open the case with the case log present in the display. 4. Click on any highlighted event in the Event window and the video and audio associated with that event will begin to play and continue to play from that point on. 5. If log notes are associated with an event, they will be displayed for each event in the Event Notes window. As the media files play, the log event list will follow the media, based on the time stamping of the current log event. The Playlist will indicate which media file is currently being played and display the duration of that media file. When the current file completes its duration the next file in the playlist will begin to play. To view an individual media file 1. Select File>Open and locate the WMV or ASF file for the case you wish to view and press Open. 2. The CaseViewer layout will change to the media only layout. There will be no log event list or notes associated with a media file only. 12

3. Use the motion control buttons to put the media into play, pause. Fast forward or rewind. You can also use the Play menu items to select motion control for the media. Video Overlay The Use Video Overlay option routes the video to the video card s processor instead of the computer s processor. This tool is useful when video does not play correctly. Use this option for troubleshooting to correct for video playback when issues arise between certain video cards and computer motherboards. To use the video overlay option: 1. Select the Edit menu item and choose Options. 2. Select the Advanced tab. 3. Select the Use Video Overlay checkbox and press OK. Monitoring the Audio JAVS AutoLog records audio on 5 different channels and each channel can be selected independently and monitored in several ways. JAVS follows AAERT standards for recording audio, which places key individual s microphones in the courtroom on separate channels for easier discernment. To change audio monitor settings: 4. Select the Audio menu item and choose a monitoring preference. Selecting Audio>Left will allow the user to hear the audio on the left side of the speaker system or headsets and monitor all left channel key microphones. Selecting Audio>Right will allow the user to hear the audio on the right side of the speaker system or headsets and monitor all right channel key microphones. Selecting Audio>Stereo will allow the user to hear the audio on both sides of the speaker system or headsets with separation of key individual microphones on their respective sides of the stereo recording. 13

Selecting Audio>Mono will allow the user to hear the audio on both sides of the speaker system or headsets with no separation of key individual microphones. 5. Select the output level for individual channels you wish to monitor by using the audio sliders in the Audio window. 6. Use the Mute buttons at the bottom of each slider to eliminate un-wanted sounds. Navigating the Media CaseViewer provides functions for navigating the media and creating new media for publishing or presentation purposes. Mark In Mark Out CaseViewer allows the user to mark sections of a case log or any media file with the use of the Mark in and Mark out functions. This is useful when the user needs to present a small section of a case for review or for evidence in another case. Once the section has a Mark in and a Mark out, pressing the Save button will create new media and save it to a specified folder on the computer. To Mark a segment of a case log: 1. Open a case log by selecting the menu item File>Open Case Log. 2. Locate the case event or series of events in the case log and click on the highlighted event. The media will begin playing from that point. 3. If you know the specific time and date of the media in wish you are searching for, you can use the All file search or the Single file search to locate the media. Current File Search button All File Search button 14

4. Use the Pause, Rewind, Fast Forward or Play command with speed control to locate the time in the media you wish to start the segment. 5. Press the Mark In button. A triangular tic mark will be placed at the bottom of the Case Timeline indicating the in time of the segment. 6. Use the Pause, Rewind, Fast Forward or Play command with speed control to locate the time in the media you wish to stop the segment. 7. Press the Mark Out button. A triangular tic mark will be placed at the bottom of the Case Timeline indicating the out time of the segment. 8. Press the Save button and choose the location for the files to be saved. You can choose to rename the file. CaseViewer will create a new CVL file and trim and copy the associated media to the chosen folder. 15

Mark In Mark Out cont. To Mark a segment of a media file: 1. Open the media file by selecting File>Open. 2. Locate the media file you wish to open and press the Open button. 3. A triangular tic mark will be placed at the bottom of the Seek Bar indicating the in time of the segment. 5. Use the Pause, Rewind, Fast Forward or Play command with speed control to locate the time in the media you wish to stop the segment. 6. Press the Mark Out button. A triangular tic mark will be placed at the bottom of the Seek Bar indicating the out time of the segment. 7. Press the Save button and choose the location for the file to be saved and give the file a name. CaseViewer will create a new WMV or ASF file and trim and copy the associated media to the chosen folder. 8. Marked segments can also be played with the use of the menu item Play>Play Segment. 16

Skip to Next - Previous When a case log is open that has multiple playlist files associated with it, CaseViewer will create triangular tic marks at the top of the Case Timeline indicating the end of each file in the Playlist. Pressing the Skip Next or Skip Previous buttons will cause the Current Time Indicator in the multiple file seek bar to jump to the next or previous tic mark on the Case Timeline. Also, the Playlist will follow by highlighting each file associated with each tic mark. Conversely, double clicking on any file in the Playlist will cause the time indicator to jump to each associated tic mark on the Case Timeline. Motion Control Commands Playback Modes CaseViewer provides motion control for video or audio media that allows the user to view the case media files or transcribe the case media files. Play / Pause button. This button has dual functionality. When the media is not in the play mode the button will display the Play icon. When pressed, the media will go into the play mode and the button will display the Pause icon. Pressing this button again will put the media into the Pause mode and the icon will return to the Play icon. Fast Forward button. This button, when pressed, will put the media into the Fast Forward mode. This speed is faster than the 2X play speed that is achieved by the Playback Speed control and audio will not be discernable at the fast forward speed. Rewind button. This button, when pressed, will put the media into the Rewind mode. This is a high speed rewind and audio will not be discernable at the rewind speed. 17

Playback Speed CaseViewer has the ability to control the playback speed of the media from 2X play speed down to half playback speed. Automatic pitch control is provided so the listener can discern the spoken audio at any speed. To set the speed for playback: 1. Press the Play button to put the media into the play mode. 2. Slide the Playback Speed indicator from 1.0 to 2. The media will speed up to 2X play speed and the automatic pitch control will allow the user to discern the audio at that speed. 3. Slide the Playback Speed indicator from 2 to.5. The media will slow down to half play speed and the automatic pitch control will allow the user to discern the audio at that speed. 4. Slide the Playback indicator to any individual mark on the Playback Speed bar for smaller speed change increments from half playback speed to 2X play speed. Foot Pedal Operation CaseViewer is designed for ease of use for the transcriber and provides hands free control of the media by use of a foot pedal controller. CaseViewer currently supports three foot pedal types, the JAVS TU-60 serial control foot pedal, the JAVS TU-65 USB control foot pedal and the Infinity USB control foot pedal. All foot pedals function in the same manner with Play, Rewind and Fast Forward functionality. Connecting the foot pedal There are two types of connections for the JAVS foot pedal controllers, USB and serial (RS232) connections. For the TU-65 and the Infinity series foot pedals, connect the USB cable from the back of the foot pedal to the USB connector on your computer. For the TU-60 foot pedal, connect the RS-232 connector from the back of the foot pedal to a COM port on your computer. COM port 1 is recommended. 18

To control the media using a foot pedal 1. Select the menu item Edit>Options and the Foot Pedal Configuration window will open. 2. Press the Rewind pad on the foot pedal and the media will go into the rewind mode until released. When released CaseViewer will go into the Pause mode. 20

User Settings View Menu CaseViewer has several user configurable settings. The View menu item allows the user to change the way they want their interface to look and feel. The View>Tools menu item allows the user to display any or all of the operating windows available in CaseViewer. A check mark will set that particular window to open. The View>Stretch video to fit menu item will allow the user to fill the viewer screen at their particular screen resolution. Note: The JAVS recorded media has a screen size of 320x240 pixels, so increasing the size of the video screen will decrease the viewing quality of the media. 21

The View>Load default tool arrangement menu item will allow the user to set all windows back to their default locations. CaseViewer Hot Keys Motion control and other commands within CaseViewer can be achieved through the use of hot key commands. Hot keys available for motion control will be displayed as a Play menu item. Play/Pause...Ctrl+P Rewind..Ctrl+Shift+B Fast Forward Ctrl+Shift+F Hot keys available for segment marking and saving will displayed as an Edit menu item. Mark In Ctrl+M Mark Out.Ctrl+O Save Marked Segment..Ctrl+A Custom hot keys can be created for all commands by selecting the menu item View>Configure Shortcuts. 22

Appendix-A CaseQueue (Option not available in the United States) The CaseQueue option records media files in segments for purposes of transcribing. Once media files have been recorded, the CaseQueue option will allow individual users to transcribe the media and then organize the transcribed media into a completed folder. The CaseQueue window is part of the CaseViewer application, but unless purchased as an option the window is inactive. When CaseViewer is first launched, the CaseQueue window will appear in the left hand side of the interface. Once closed, the window will remain closed on all successive launches of CaseViewer. If you have purchased the CaseQueue option, refer to the documentation provided with this option. 23
