1 Digital Video Editing Using imovie This is an introductory tutorial into basic digital video editing. Participants will learn how to transfer video from tape to the computer, plus basic editing techniques to create a movie using Apple imovie 4 software. Clips will be automatically stored on the shelf display by default. I. Editing video clips Editing of the video clip can be done while clip is on the shelf, or in the clip viewer. To edit video clips, click the Edit Mode button. (While editing you can crop, split clips, copy, paste, arrange, add transitions, and rename clips) 1

2 A. Moving imported clips to the clip viewer and arranging them a. To move a clip from the shelf to the clip viewer, drag the clip to the desired location. Note: You cannot rearrange clips in the timeline viewer b. Hold down the shift key to move multiple pictures. c. To rearrange a clip, just drag it before or after another clip. Note: You cannot place a clip before or after an existing transition B. Cropping a video clip You can adjust your footage to any desired length using the crop markers. Click the clip itself, or click on the clip in the audio viewer. a. Click to select the clip b. Click and drag just below the scrubber bar to make the crop markers appear c. Drag the crop markers to the desired length with one marker at beginning and one at the end. The clip will be the part inside the crop markers. d. Choose Crop from the Edit menu bar. C. Splitting a video clip You can split a clip into two. You can move the remainder of the clip to the shelf. a. Select a clip in the clip viewer or in the timeline viewer. b. On the scrubber bar under the monitor, move the playhead to the frame where you want to split the clip. c. Choose Split Clip at Playhead from the Edit menu. D. Editing using Cut, Copy, Paste, and Clear commands Any portion of a clip can be copied into the Clipboard and then pasted into a Different location. a. Select a clip in the clip viewer or timeline viewer. b. Choose Cut or Copy from the Edit menu. c. Move the playhead to where you want the clip to reside. d. Choose Paste from the Edit menu to place or copy the clip at the desired location. e. To remove a clip or portion of it, select the clip, then choose Clear from the Edit menu or press the delete key. Undo from the Edit menu will reverse this action. 2

3 E. Adding video effects You can add effects to our movie, such as color adjustments. a. Click the Effects button. b. Select the video you will be applying the effect to. c. Select a video effect in the Effects panel. d. Adjust the effect using the sliders that appear in the Effects panel. Not every effect has sliders. e. Click Apply to add effect. F. Changing direction and speed of a video clip If you want to make one or more video clips play backwards, reverse the clip. a. Select the clip or clips you want to reverse b. Choose Reverse Clip Direction from the Advanced menu. If you want to make one or more video clips play slower or faster, change the speed. a. Select the clip or clips in the timeline viewer. b. Drag the clip speed slider arrow to a faster or slower setting. G. Adding scene transitions Transitions create a smooth entrance and exit in between clips. Transitions can be added to the beginning or the end of a movie or between two video clips. a. To add a transition, click the Transitions button. b. Choose a transition in the Transition palette. c. Use the speed slider (In the Transitions panel) to modify the speed of the transition into or out of the clip. Note: Slower transitions will take more time to render. d. Click an arrow to choose the transition direction. This option is not available for all transitions. e. Drag the transition from the palette to the desired location in the timeline viewer. A transition icon will appear between the two clips, and a progress bar will appear under it. The transition is done rendering when the progress bar disappears. 3

4 H. Renaming clips Clips are saved by a generic name. However you can rename clips inside of imovie application, but do not rename clips inside of the imovie project media folder. a. To rename your clips while in clip viewer or shelf area, click the clip name and type the new name. b. To rename your clips while in the timeline viewer, double click the clip and rename it in the Clip Info window. II. Adding music, sound effects and narration to your movie You can add background music from CD or file, voice narration, and sound effects. You can arrange the sequence and adjust the duration. You also have control over the volume levels of the clips that you add. There are two ways to add music. You can record from an audio CD, or import an AIFF or MP3 audio file. A. Adding audio CD music a. Click the Audio button. b. Insert an audio CD into your CD-ROM drive. c. Select audio CD from drop down menu d. Select a track in the Audio panel and either drag the track from the Audio panel to the timeline viewer audio track 1 or 2 or click the Record Music button on the Audio panel to start recording music. Click the Stop button to stop recording. B. Importing audio files from itunes a. Select the song you wish to import b. Drag the song to the audio track c. The song will appear on audio track C. Adding sound effects Sound effects are marked by a square, and cannot be modified in their duration a. Click the Audio button. b. Select imovie sound effects from drop down menu c. Drag a sound effect from the list in the Audio panel to a desired location on audio track 1 or 2 in the timeline viewer. 4

5 Note: To reposition the sound effect, just drag it to the new position. To delete a sound effect, select it and press the Delete key. D. Adding a voice narration to your movie You can record your own voice into your movie using a microphone with your computer. Position the playhead where you want the narration to begin while in the timeline viewer. a. Click the Audio button b. Click the Record Voice button in the Audio Panel. c. Begin speaking and then click Stop when you are finished recording. Use the volume level meter to determine how loudly you speak into the microphone E. Edit volume of audio clips This is a new feature in imovie a. Check the edit volume button. b. Select an audio clip in the audio track 1 or 2 in the timeline viewer. c. Click and drag the markers to the desired volume. F. Splitting audio clips a. Select an audio clip in the audio clip. b. Move the playhead to where you want to split the clip. c. Choose Split selected Audio Clip at Playhead from the Edit menu. G. Locking audio to specific video clip You may need to lock audio to a specific video clip if you edit video after placing audio. a. Select the audio clip. b. Move the playhead to the point where you want audio and video to lock. c. Choose Lock Audio Clip at Playhead from the Advanced menu. Note: if you need to unlock the clips, Choose Unlock Audio Clip from the Advanced menu. 5

6 H. Extracting audio from a video clip You may want to extract the audio from a video clip, the edit the audio and /or reuse elsewhere in the movie. III. Adding titles a. In the timeline viewer, select the video clip. b. Choose extract Audio form the Advanced menu. c. The extracted audio will appear in the audio track 1. Note: Extracting audio actually copies the audio from the video clip. IMovie turns the volume off when you extract the audio clip. You will no longer hear the audio in the original video clip anymore. You can add a variety of titles styles, fonts, and colors to your movie. Titles can be superimposed over portions of clips or added over black as a separate clip. A. Superimpose a title over a clip or over black a. If you want the title to appear over a clip, click the clip in the clip viewer or the timeline viewer. b. Click the Titles button. c. Select a title style from the list in the Titles panel. d. Type the text for your title into the text field or fields at the bottom of the Titles panel e. If you want the title over a clip leave be sure the box labeled Over Black is left unchecked f. If you want the title to be over black, select the Over Black checkbox. g. Click the Text Color picker and choose a color. h. Select a font for your title from the font pop-up menu. i. Adjust the Speed and/or Pause sliders to speed up or slow down the effect. j. Change the direction of title scroll for the styling effect (i.e. rolling credits) k. Use the text size slider to adjust the text size. l. Drag the title from the Titles panel to the viewer. Place the title before the clip you want it to appear over. Note: Titles must be placed before or after clips. B. Editing an existing title a. Select the title clip in the clip viewer. b. Click the Titles button. c. Make you modifications. d. Click the Update button in the Titles panel. 6

7 IV. Photos a. Choose the Photo button. b. Select the file you want to import. c. De-select Ken Burns effect d. Choose duration image will be displayed e. Choose how the photo will be framed on screen f. Drag the image to the timeline V. Capturing and importing media A. Capturing media a. With your camcorder connected to your computer, Click the Camera Mode button. b. Use the Camera Mode playback controls to preview a tape in the imovie monitor. Use the Rewind, Fast Forward, Play, Pause, and Stop buttons to find the segments you wish to import. c. Click the Import button or the space bar to begin capturing a sequence. d. Click the Import button or the space bar again to stop recording. VI. Exporting to tape Once you have your movie created in imovie, you can share the final movie. A. Recording a movie to tape: First step is for recording to the mini DV. a. Connect your DV device to your computer with your Fire Wire cable. b. Put in the tape you want to record to. c. Choose Share Movie from the File menu. d. Choose Video Camera from the menu. e. Click the Share button. Note: Be aware that exporting overwrites the current tape. 7

8 B. Exporting a movie to a Quick Time file a. Choose Share Movie from the File menu. b. Choose Quick Time from the Export to pop-up menu. c. Select a movie format from the menu (see below). d. Click Share e. Name your movie and choose a destination for the file. f. Click Save QuickTime Movie Formats Movie, Small creates a small movie file optimized for sending over . Web Movie, Small creates a movie optimized for playback over the WWW. Streaming Web Movie, Small allows you to prepare the movie for posting on a QuickTime compatible streaming Web server. CD-ROM Movie, Medium creates a movie optimized for playback from slower CD-ROM drives. Full Quality, Large creates a high-quality movie, preserving the most data possible. Expert allows you to export movies using custom Quick Time settings. C. Exporting a movie to idvd a. Use this option to send your movie to idvd 8
