1 FTP INSTRUCTIONS - PC (WINDOWS) COMPUTER USERS These instructions are for PC (Windows) computer users only. To do the work in the course, you will need to transfer copies of the files you work on at home to the department (remote) server so others can view your websites. This requires that you use a File Transfer Protocol (FTP) program. If you own have Dreamweaver, you can use it (I can send you instructions). If not, download Coreftp (a PC-Windows program) and follow the instructions below. 1. Download Coreftp at the following address: 2. For these instructions, I chose (32-bit). Click on the link and the Opening coreftplite.exe box appears. 3. Click Save File to save the file on your computer. 4. After the coreftplite.exe saves, double-click it to install. You can choose all the default options as it installs. 5. After the installation, open coreftplite.exe. It should appear in the Windows Start menu. 6. When it opens, the Site Manger displays (see Figure 1). If it does not display, choose File >> Connect. Figure 1: Site Manger

7. In the Site Manager box enter the following (see Figure 1): Site name: JMA or another name of your choice Host/IP/URL: www.jma.duq.

Before connecting, click the Advanced button next to Host/IP/URL to display the Advanced Site Settings box (see Figure 2). 9. Click Directory/Folder and enter the following: Remote Start Folder: /users/yourusername where YourUserName is your Dori username Local Start Folder: This is optional. If you d like, browse to the folder on your computer that contains your files. Click OK. The Advanced Site Settings box closes. Figure 2. Advanced Settings 10. Click the Connect button on the Site Manager box (see Figure 1)

11. After connecting, Coreftp will display your space (files and folders) on the JMA server (remote server) (see Figure 3). We refer to this space as the Z-drive or User folder.

It is where you can store files. Notice in the right frame of Figure 3 that the path is /users/gibbsw/, which is the location of my folder (gibbsw) that is inside a folder named users. If my Dori username was smithj, then the path would be /users/smithj. You can store files in your User folder (e.g., smithj) that only you can see. 12. In Figure 3, the left frame displays the files and folders on your (local) computer. The right frame displays files and folders on the JMA server (remote). Figure 3. Contents of User Folder 13. To transfer (upload) files and folders to the JMA server, single-click on them in left frame to select them (see Figure 4). To select multiple adjacent files or folders hold down the Shift key while you click. To select items that are not adjacent, hold the Control key down while you click. 14. Click the Upload buttons (see Figure 4) and the items will upload to the server into the folder you selected. Note: Sometimes the Upload button becomes inactive. Reactive it by

4 clicking the Refresh button (Circular icon sixth icon from top right of left frame and same on right frame). You can determine the folder on the server to which your files get uploaded by looking at the path (e.g., /users/gibbsw/) in the right frame. As shown in Figure 4, gibbsw is the folder where the files get uploaded because the path is /users/gibbsw/. To change the location, simply double-click on another folder (make sure the folder name appears at the end of the path) or create a folder by clicking the New Folder (Make Directory) icon (3 rd icon in just above the path see Figure 4). 15. You can also download files from the server to your computer by selecting them in the right frame and clicking the download button. Figure 4. Left frame (local computer), Right frame (remote server) The PUB Folder Creating a Course folder JMA226 Your User Folder is a space where you can store files and folders that other people cannot see. However, files for the web that you want other people to see must be put into the PUB folder. You should have a PUB folder inside of your User Folder (see Figure 5). Remember that all files (images, html pages, etc.) you what people to see on your websites must be put inside the PUB folder. Figure 5. PUB folder

5 The following instructions will help you create a folder inside your PUB folder for the course titled JMA226 (no spaces). As you work on assignments and make websites, created additional folders inside the JMA226 folder. To be organized, keep all course related works inside JMA To get inside the PUB folder, double-click the folder (in right frame) and PUB will be appended to the path (see Figure 6). Sometimes with Coreftp you need to double-click the folder a couple of times. 2. At this point in the semester, your PUB folder is probably empty unlike the PUB folder shown in Figure 6. Ensure that you are inside PUB by checking the path. For example, in Figure 6 the path users/gibbsw/pub is showing indicating that I am inside my PUB folder. Figure 6. Coreftp displays PUB folder 3. Click the New Folder (Make Directory) button (see Figure 7). The Make Directory box appears in which you should type JMA226 (see Figure 7). 4. Click OK and a new folder named JMA226 will appear in the right frame (remote server). You can create additional folders in JMA226 for specific assignments. 5. To transfer (upload) files into JMA226, double-click it to open it. The path should be /users/yourusername/pub/jma226/ (see Figure 8). 6. In the left frame (local computer), select the files or folders you want to upload and click the Upload button

html on the web, you open a web browser and type the following address: http://www.jma.duq.edu/users/yourusername/pub/jma226/index.html If it was my User folder the address would be: http://www.jma.duq.edu/users/gibbsw/pub/jma226/index.

Pressing the Upload button transfers it to the right (remote server) frame and, in this case, inside the JMA226 folder. 8. To view index.html on the web, you open a web browser and type the following address: If it was my User folder the address would be: Note: When you upload a file (e.g., index.html) to the JMA server as you create a website, you are uploading a copy of the original file. The original file stays on your computer. To make changes, you typically edit the original file (the copy on your computer) and then reupload it, which overwrites the copy on the server assuming the name (e.g., index.html) is the same
